BoneStock 5th Gear April 1, 2013 Author Share April 1, 2013 hmm, for my cars usually when it is time for a change of batt, i will change to an oversized one. because my cars are usually underutilized and i ever been overseas for up to 2 mths. after 2 months, the car still start up fine !!!! One of the mechanic ever told me before, that the car's alternator is not a "smart" charger. there is no tickle-charge when the batt is almost full or it doesn't stop charging even when it is full. the load on the alternator is constant. might need to check on this. upsize a bit is ok. But the previous owner up 50~60% for my ride. Too much. ↡ Advertisement
MikeT April 15, 2013 Share April 15, 2013 driving a getz, although small and simple, can save quite a bit. so far my mileage is about 14-15km/l, one tank can cost about $70+ (without station and credit card discount), road tax quite cheap
BoneStock 5th Gear April 15, 2013 Author Share April 15, 2013 I couldn't agree more especially the "amazing mode of transport" bit. This is not an exaggeration. It really is. TS enjoy yr ride. Yeah, agree. So far I am just over 1 week with the Getz and I have to agree with some of the bros' comments on this bit - "amazing mode of transport". And it is no exaggeration at all Getz is the cheapest car I have ever bought but it is also the most enjoyable to drive. I am rediscovering the joy of driving for the 1st time in many many moons. It was like I just obtained my driving licence and always eager to get behind the wheels... I pondered over this for a few months before deciding on a manual ride again....and it's not easy considering the last time I had a manual ride was over 15 years ago. Getz is so easy to drive. So for those bros who have been hesitating a switch back to manual...at least for a few years of joy, wait no more!

And that was done with the open pod filter. I have just reverted to stock airbox but the FC seems to be more or less the same. Anyway, I am planning to change timing belt soon and at the same time replace the dubious engine oil to something I am more familiar with and see how it goes. I usually top up when the needle drops below 1/4 mark and pump ~32L when the pump auto stopped. Some bros in Hyundai seems to suggest that it can squeeze in another 5~6L after auto stop? Can go another 5 - 6L after auto stop but no point doing it in SIN cos not really good to fill to brim. Better to only do this in MY cos petrol is cheap. The aftermarket power windows? Check if timing belt already changed. If not you have to fork out money to change it. Test drive to find out if you like it. Its a heavy car with a small engine so not the fastest to accelerate at the lights. But the heavy weight is good for NSH at 110kmh

BoneStock 5th Gear April 15, 2013 Author Share April 15, 2013 Is Getz 1.1M really nice to drive? I am looking at one Jan07, can probably get for $22k after neg. Anything to look out for? The aftermarket power windows? yup, very nice to drive....but this can be very personal and not everyone will agree with me. The pedals are effortless....in stack contrast to the old manuals that I used to drive that required more effort to operate. Car is small, very easy to manouvre and also do parking. Cabin space is generous for a small car of this size...some clever design by the kimchi engineers. In fact, the legroom is much better than my Sunny. The boot is small but enough for my usage. I only have it for >1week so it is still too early for me to know the common issues on the Getz. But so far, I DIY replaced the open pod filter to the stock airbox and I feel the Japs are perhaps still better in terms of the design of the engine bay. Just installing a simple airbox required me to remove the battery as well. If not, I won't be able to access 2 of the screws at all. There was a third screw behind the box and the only way you could "catch" it is by feel only. Cannot use socket since the space was so cramped and could only do bit by bit turning with spanner....quite a pain. As for choosing the right car, I merely go around test driving a few Getz to get a feel of it. In terms of mechanical, I do the following checks with the help of a powerful torchlight - CV joints for broken boots or leaks. I caught 2 cars with this fault. - there are 2 bolts securing each fender in the engine bay. Check for signs that the bolts were loosen. This could mean the fenders were removed before for accident repairs. Again, I caught 2 cars with this fault. - Use your hand to feel below the brake/clutch/whatever cylinders you see in the engine bay for leaks. Rem to turn off engine first. - Some dealers like to apply oil to the engine parts to make it look glossy. When I see such engine, immediately I walk away 'cos the dealers are trying to hide oil leaks in the engine bay. - I also use my ears to listen to strange sounds from the engine, both stationary and during test drives. Usually dealers tend to turn on car stereo loud loud to hide the sounds, so rem to off the car stereo when you do test drives. - Look undercarriage as much as possible for oil leaks. I caught one with oil streaking down the exhaust to the catalytic converter. - Next I will inspect all the doors to make sure all the spot weldings are intact. - Also inspect the boot for any fresh paint, or signs of accident repair. - For any cars with fresh coat of paint. Be very careful. I chose not to send the car for STA inspection as I feel buying a used car very much depend on luck. A car can appear perfectly fine but problems could start to surface after several months of ownership. So just set aside some $$ for rainy days. Also bargain hard for a good price so that it can save you some $$. I still remember I sent a used car to a personal mechanic friend for evaluation and it turned out to be a very unpleasant experience. But that's a different story. Good luck on your car hunting. Actually, the depreciation for a 1.6 3 dr Getz is lower than a 5 dr if you know how to bargain. I know because i am driving a 3 dr which i bought 2 years ago and the dealer told me frankly 3 dr Getz no demand. Therefore, that time i bought (2011), my yearly depreciation was less than 4k

Maybe can test drive both. Based on my search in sgcarmart, here's what I gathered If you want manual transmission, it's either 1.1L 5door or 1.6L 3door. Other variants all come with auto tranny only. Hope this helps.

Wickham Neutral Newbie April 20, 2013 Share April 20, 2013 if it gives any comfort to the new getz owners, i've been driving mine for more than 9 years with no problems. mine's the first gen 2004 1.3A model. was involved in a chain car collision and repairs amounted to $10k in 2006. many well-meaning people told me (incl cab drivers) to sell the car after the accident cos problems arising from the accident/repairs will surface later etc. well, i held on to it and it has faithfully served me well. mileage reads more than 110,000 and thus far, only timing belt was replaced. so yeah, getz is trusty and dont let the naysayers say otherwise abt this car. :) and to be fair, i've driven both conti (ford, citroen, opel, bmw) and japs (mazda, mitsubitshi). getz has not failed me, but some of the above have. :)
Camrycamry 1st Gear April 20, 2013 Share April 20, 2013 go change all the belts $300-$400. peace of mind for the next 3 years before you scrap the car.
13177 Hypersonic April 20, 2013 Share April 20, 2013 Your getz already 9 years plus? First gen getz should be in 2003, i remember the other day still saw one getz parked at a carpark and the car plate is SDV! $10K to repair the car, seems like the chain car collision quite serious! And yet you still hold on to your car until now! and shocking that it doesnt give any "side effect'! Actually for a 9 years car, mileage only at 110K consider very low lo. I think many 7-8 years old car mileage should be at least 150K even under normal usage. ↡ Advertisement
