It depends on which 156 he is driving. The higher specs one do out perform the 159.

2.0 vs 2.2, the 2.0 can pick up very fast :) but does not feel as solid as the 159

fully agree with you on that description of the 156. miss mine loads.

Being quite affordable some might consider keeping the 156 as a hobby car. Provided they are true petrol heads as well.

Twin Spark Alfa engine (altho later model's a 2.0JTS) and a more raw (tho less reliable) Selespeed. Also a lighter car.

 

159 has grown up whether you consider it as an upgrade or not. The 156 driver should grow up too

I guess the trend is to look back instead of forward if you seek the true Alfa experience.
