2015 Mazda 2

Hi all,

I have a Mz2 HB. I'm getting this knocking sound whenever I turn the steering wheel, usually during u-turns and parking. It doesn't happen all the time and it's hard to replicate the problem. It's more common when parking on slopes or at multi-storey carparks. But once the sound starts, it will be there at every minor or major turn.

My warranty has ended and I got TEK to look at it. They said there's no safety issue so it's not worth repairing as it will cost S$1k+.

I read online, it seems to be a common problem for this model. My mileage is only 16k km after 3 years, so I'm a bit reluctant to spend 1k to change the affected part and it will come back to haunt me again after another 16k km.

How did you guys deal with the problem especially when most of the cars are approaching the end of the 3 year warranty?

Will the affected part give way suddenly or is it just an irritating problem that I've to live with? I'm doing a trip to Malaysia soon, so I would like the car to be in tip top condition.

By the way, what's your fuel consumption? I'm doing 70% city, 30% expressway in SG and I'm getting 7.6l/100km. I fill the car with 98 grade petrol, seems to have more power and the engine is smoother than 95.

Thank you.

What is the defective part they mentioned? Is it the steering shaft? Lower arm bushing? Or stabilizer bar bushing? I had all these replaced during warranty period due to unusual sound.

The sound you are hearing will just get worse over time but then it will help the mechanic to confirm which is the correct thing to change(because if it worn bushing, it will be easier to see if it becomes more "worn").i went back to TEK a few times becausethey couldnt find the fault and was replacing the wrong parts.

Fyi i am nearing 80k km now, 3yr+ old car

They didn't mention the part. My warranty was just over by two weeks when I sent it in and the guy checked with his manager, can't claim under warranty despite the low mileage. So his advice was to continue driving since there's no safety issue, then replace the part at a later stage.

I'll mention it again when I send it in for servicing next month.

My mileage is low, so it takes time to detect and monitor weird noises. I was expecting the parts to last longer than 16k km on a brand new Japanese car though.

As long as the affected part doesn't give way suddenly, I will live with it.

Mine is Made in Japan. Paid more for lesser space for hatchback. Lovely design and something different from the other makes on the roads.

Minor issues are to be expected, especially for the early batches of a new model. The solution is what I'm interested in.

That is because yours is a hatchback, same as mine.

The sedan versions are made in thailand.

I thought you said the solution is to change the steering rack but you do not want to because it is too expensive.

Not sure whether it's the steering rack problem but it seems many people changed the steering rack under warranty.

It will have to be replaced at some point and I'll pay for it, when the problem gets more serious like what another forumer has suggested. Since TEK isn't in a hurry to replace it either. Of course, if there's warranty then replace under warranty. Otherwise, it would make sense to use it until it is worn out before replacing, since I was told it doesn't affect the safety of the car.

Well itâs still back right?

Then why you never share in here since you knew about it last month?

It's stated in the expo show last month.

What are your needs for the car?

You'll realise a common complaint is the lack of space, which is true. There isn't much legroom at the back.

It's ok if you only have front passengers most of the time or at most 1 or 2 in the rear for short journeys and don't need a lot of boot space.

Say ... maintenance, drive and reliability??
