There is already a movie thread which is quite active, is there a need for a new thread?

Will you please consider allowing modification of the first post?

Good for info sharing.

Thanks

I will bring this up but ultimately I'm not the decision maker. There's a reason for not allowing edits for first post so we'll leave it to the management to decide what's best.

Film title: Flight of the Phoenix

Film genre: Action, Disaster

Year released: 2004

Rating: 3.5 out of 5 popcorns

Only after watching the film for the first time did I learn that this was actually a remake of a 1965 film. Based on my first impressions of this film, it was a decent film to watch on a wet, quiet night - delivering a decent balance of action, drama and thrill.

The story is about a pair of pilots played by Dennis Quaid (who sports a 6-pack in this one) and Tyrese Gibson (coming off of his 2F2F fame) ferrying a cargo and their passengers across the Gobi desert, but find themselves stranded after crash landing from a sudden sandstorm. Rationing of food and water begins as the pilots decide to wait for rescue, and soon, a Lord of the Flies survival situation develops as the survivors get increasingly impatient and desperate.

Then coincidentally, one of the passengers just happens to be an experimental aircraft designer, specialising in building aircraft using unconventional designs. He assesses the damage to the plane and suggests that they can build a new plane out of it to escape the desert to freedom. The rest of the passengers are actually all metal workers, with all the right equipment on board the plane cargo to help achieve that result. And as they are building their plane, they are attacked by desert marauders who want to kill them for their valuables - which they managed to fend off. Eventually, they managed to finish the plane and escape successfully to return to civilisation.

Some of the well-made moments of the film were:

  • the fight for water, resulting in them losing an entire jerry can of potable water;
  • the discovery that Elliot, the aircraft designer, was actually a model aircraft designer; and
  • the engine start-up sequence towards the end of the film as they tried to start the finished plane and escape.

All in all, an entertaining piece that will leave you satisfied, but not overly impressed. Perhaps you might be impressed to see that Dennis Quaid had a sculpted body with a defined six-pack back in the day. Also stars Miranda Otto coming off her LOTR: The Two Towers fame.

Have you watched this film yet? Why not give it a try on Netflix or when it comes up on your cable movie channel?

request: can spoiler tag or not?
