@13177 road was wet after rain when I test drove both cars.

I _felt_ the MG S5 noisy sounded like the motor or some belt 'whinging'. Also the sound insulation seemed less effective on the MG S5 when I can hear the noisy bus as I passed it. But this is not scientific, it depends what cars and what they were doing on the road at that moment.

@Tkseah Didn't test drive the e.mas. I am a bit concerned about the built quality and after sales support of Proton. You were right, I should test drive for fun even not interested in it just to experience it and benchmark. Maybe next time I go play at Leng Kee then I go try it.

NB I didn't like BYD much either so it won't change my view if e.mas has a BYD badge 😆

Did u go see the e.mas7 next door?  My missus noted the rear centre seat of Aion V is not comfy compared to MG S5 and e.mas7.  Also the boot depth of Aion V is less than MG S5 and a.mas7, which is a consideration for me as I need to fit a foldable wheelchair used by my parent.

So which EV did you buy in the end?

e.mas7 is now assembled in Malaysia as a CKD from Geely, so parts quality should be better than native proton of yesteryears.. it also comes with cross border warranty so can also go proton Malaysia service centers if got problem.  Local servicing for proton is by Vincar, so probably same level of service and support as for Aion.  Personally I have more confidence in Eurokars for servicing and support for MG.

Gathered from the web:-

The GAC Aion V features a laminated soundproof front windscreen as standard across its range. [1, 2]

This specialized glass consists of two layers of glass bonded with a sound-absorbing interlayer. It is a key part of the vehicle's noise insulation strategy, which also includes double-layered acoustic glass for the front row side windows to ensure a quiet cabin experience. [1, 2, 3, 4]

Key Glass & Insulation Features:

Laminated Soundproof Windshield: Designed to significantly reduce wind and road noise entering from the front of the vehicle.

Double-Glazed Side Windows: In addition to the windscreen, the front-row side windows also use double-layer laminated acoustic glass for enhanced refinement.

Heat Protection: The windscreen and side windows typically feature high UV filtration to protect the interior from heat and sun damage.

Panoramic Sunroof: On many trims, such as the Aion V Premium and Aion V Luxury, you also get a large panoramic glass roof equipped with an electric sunshade to manage cabin temperature.

As regards to the comparison between Aion V and MG S5.

Also gathered from the web:

The Aion V generally feels quieter than the MG S5 primarily because it employs more advanced passive noise reduction materials, most notably the double-layered acoustic glass on its front side windows. While both cars have laminated front windscreens, the Aion V's additional front-row acoustic glazing provides a superior barrier against wind and traffic noise. [1, 2, 3, 5]

Key factors contributing to the Aion V's quieter cabin include:

Front-Row Acoustic Glazing: The Aion V features double-glazed acoustic glass for the front row. This is a significant upgrade over the MG S5's standard single-layer tempered side glass, effectively cutting down high-frequency wind noise at highway speeds.

Superior NVH Insulation: Reviewers often note that the Aion V is "top-notch" for sound insulation, effectively isolating the cabin from the external world. It uses a generous amount of soft-touch, sound-dampening materials throughout high-contact areas like the dashboard and doors.

Comfort-Oriented Suspension: The Aion V's suspension is tuned specifically for "soft comfort". This "pliant ride" helps soak up road imperfections more effectively than the MG S5, which has a firmer setup that can feel "jiggly" and transmit more road-borne vibrations into the cabin.

Linear Power Delivery: The Aion V is designed for "gentle manners" and linear power delivery. In contrast, some drivers find the MG S5's power delivery to be "jerky," which can lead to a less refined and noisier driving experience under acceleration. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 12]

😁From internet:

While the Proton e.MAS 7 is a co-developed sibling of the Geely Galaxy E5, some users and reviewers have noted differences in "perceived quality" that make it feel slightly different from its Chinese counterpart. This is often due to strategic material choices and localization efforts meant to balance price and durability for the Malaysian market. [1, 2]

Key Reasons for Perceived Differences:

Material "Downgrades" for Practicality: In some interior areas, high-maintenance materials from the Geely version have been replaced. For example, some users noticed that parts of the centre console that are soft-touch on the Galaxy E5 have been replaced with hard plastic on the Proton version. Additionally, the light-coloured "white leather" from the Geely was swapped for more durable, darker trims better suited for local maintenance.

Ride and Handling Tuning: One of the biggest differences is the suspension. The Geely Galaxy E5 is often described as having a very soft and "floaty" ride. Proton’s in-house engineering team retuned the e.MAS 7 with a firmer, more settled suspension to handle Malaysian roads and spirited driving better. For drivers used to the "pillowy" luxury feel of Chinese EVs, this firmer setup can sometimes be mistaken for a lack of refinement, even though it offers better body control.

Localization Tweaks: Proton added specific "Malaysianisations" that change the car's feel, such as improved water wading capability (up to 400mm) to handle local floods, which required structural and sealing adjustments.

Component Sourcing: While the core engineering is shared, Proton utilizes some local vendors for specific components. This can lead to subtle differences in the tactile feedback of buttons or panel gaps compared to the high-volume production lines used for the Chinese domestic market. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 9, 10]

Where It Actually Matches (or Beats) the Geely:

Despite these perceptions, many reviewers from Sgcarmart and Business Times argue the build is actually quite solid:

Cabin Insulation: The cabin is noted for being exceptionally quiet, with impressive insulation and high stability at highway speeds.

Technology: It retains the high-end 15.4-inch 2.5K touchscreen and the powerful 7nm processor used in the Geely, ensuring the tech feels just as premium.

Charging Capability: The Proton version features an 11kW AC on-board charger, which is significantly faster than the 6.6kW unit found on the Galaxy E5 in China. [1, 2, 3]

Yup. I just noticed yesterday. 2 Aion V back to back in front of me. The red color seems the best color.

Double glazed side windows supposedly makes a huge difference for highway noise, other than door soundproofing.

Oh there is!
I think dealer probably bring it in recently but not sure.

Recently I saw one with a two-tone colour, orange body with white roof; looks very striking.

Better continue this in the proton thread so we dun mess up this Aion thread.  But I think the e.mas7 is closer to the geely ex5 sold internationally (both LHD and RHD) than the china domestic e5 which is LHD only.

At the Car Expo few weeks ago, I was surprised that there are 3 body oufits for the Aion V. I didn't take photos myself but i googled from internet.

1.  Standard - as per what you see in the dealer webpage; body colour-coordinated front bumper, rear bumper and door side lower panels, with minimal glossy black trims.

2.  Blacked-out front and rear bumper lower panels as well as door side lower panels.

3.  Adventure Edition. I saw that it has higher suspension, smaller 18" rims (black) and fitted with larger all-terrain tyres.

Road noise might be more in MGS5. Aion V seems like feel and look better in terms of the interior, features and materials than MGS5.

But overall depends on what you want. I think MGS5 and Aion V each has their own good points.
