Automatic fish feeders are common now.

I bought one. But I forgot my CA can just feed the fish haha since it's at work

Got WiFi one.

This one I bought is considered low tech liao. Since it's internal timer. WiFi timer

I am more concern on the water quality......hobbyist (like me) normally overcrowd the tank...😅

Or you may ask someone you trust to feed once/day or two(best with experience in aquarium)

mine is planted tank. don't really care too much about changing water. but algae bloom can be a problem. my water parameters is not good also, haha lot of nitrate and nitrite. Too much aquasoil probably.

but the fish and shrimp are doing well bar a few weak ones which died along the way.

I cut down from feeding daily to maybe 4x/wk. Nanofish don't eat much.

Actually just a simple guideline is only feed what they can eat finish in 1 minute?

I'm using a canister filter for my planted tank. I think it's relatively larger capacity for bio media helps keep my Nitrate / Nitrite level down.

You need to add a WiFi cam to watch the feeding taking place.

i stuffed about 150-180gm of biomedia beads in a nylon mesh bag into my HOB.
Lol there's so many that my filter flow is slow, and when i dismantle for cleaning, i usually need to readjust the bag at least 2-3 times to get the flow back working [:p]

Cos I only have one tank, if don't use up the 200gm i bought, just lying around doing nothing.

I started with aquarium soil too. (These things are not cheap [sweatdrop]) My NH3, NO3 level initially went thru the roof. No wonder those tank cycling videos advocate heavy water changes during initial phase with such substrates. I've since changed to gravel.

You can put in a 2nd HOB for :

  1. Fully deploy the 200g of bio media
  2. Improve flow
  3. Have a backup in case one of the HOB fails

I bought like maybe 15kg and used about 70-80% of it. also 5kg of compost soil and about 5kg of black sand.

Sand is bad idea, but it does provide a stable base for my decorative house in the center of the tank.

my friend has quite a few tanks with 100% aquasoil. But usually need UV light in HOB according to him. My HOB doesnt allow u to stick things inside, so i got another UV pump.

Yes, this can be challenging. I always ask people to consider when they plan to setup a fish tank. Similar to other pets, tank inhabitant is also a commitment.

"Do you need to be away sometime during the year when no one is around to maintain the tank, or feed the inhabitants? They'll probably survive 2 or 3 days without food. More then that, they'll start to stress."

no food for few days not the scary, the most scary part is electricity trip or maintenance without power...

This can be mitigated with a UPS connected to air pump to keep the water moving.

Do you use the UV pump to control algae? or for other reasons?

Yeah for algae control. I run it occasionally only though. Flow too strong for this small tank.

Btw, what's your tank size?
