It's not all from the length. Its more space sideways as well. The Bimmer's problem is that the two suspension towers intrude into the boot space so space is very limited, especially sideways

Wouldn't the vertical piece flap vigorously during high speed if you DIY ?

Yes I think it will flap but how much it does depends on how far down it projects. I have mine just 3 inches above the ground. I think it will help if you convex the flap (looking from the front) to give it more rigidity and round the ends so as to reduce turbulence induced flapping.

 

I do not recommend using double sided tape casue it does not stock well to plastic. So it might drop off. Using metal may also be a problem cause if you go over humps or park at them concrete kerbs... you migh potentially bend the metal and it might rub against the tyre. Know so cause I tried so... [:(]
