WoW! Lada! [thumbsup]

"the factory declares that this car (still a prototype) will be destined to compete with the BMW 520 and Audi A4"

Journalist quoting spokesperson for Lada Togliattigrad's factory. [laugh]

Don't laugh at Lada. The Lada Niva 4X4 is stronger than any crap Freelander or RX300. The little beast just keeps going and doesn't die! The surviving ones now have turbocharged FIAT engines or some forced induction equipment. It is only 1.6L and damn difficult to kill. The car is designed to survive the harshest Russian winters. Remember, German tanks froze when they invaded Russia in WWII. If you want tough things that look as they work, the Russians are good at it.

You know what kind of country the former Soviet Union is? From the frozen wastelands of Siberia to hot scorching deserts! Nivas survive everywhere but they use inferior Russian steel. Many enthusiasts galvanize the whole body when they get their hands on one.

Nissan Patrol, Toyota Landcruiser and even Mitsubishi Pajeros don't take the beating these little fellas take. Very military. No consumer comforts.

Check this URL: http://www.turboniva.ca/

While you are there check out his videos. The sound of the engine is very menacing for a puny 4X4. Makes Vitaras look like Yuppy weaklings.

There strange Ladas as well. There is this prototype KADI-15 that uses the Zhughuli engine that churns out 85HP but on a chassis that is only 0.65ton. Max speed it reached was 200kph [jawdrop] .

Russia must maintain their automobile industry. Russians need cars. Not MB or BMWs but strong cars that suit their harsh climate. GM has a stake in Lada. The new Niva is branded as a Chevrolet. We might soon see cheap unstoppable 4X4 Chevies.

Lada is now pretty smart. They know that the Niva platform is pretty robust and are making variants out of it. There are MPV and pickup versions planned.

Lada under new management. May see an "Octavia" like what Skoda is now. The so-called new guys are challenging the established guys. Witness the Korean makes and now the Eastern European makes.

Hi there Darklord

Seems like you are familiar with the Niva. You are half correct. The surviving ones are only 1/4 original at most. The rest of the 3/4 will be from whatever fits and goes. Saw it once in Batu Pahat. This Malay family owns one and when he pops the bonnet, it's a VR4 engine! The body is tough though. Too bad it's only 3 doors. A little inconvenient for the rear passengers. Other than that, if there a full factory one around, sure to overheat like how the Samara did.
