Mojoe Neutral Newbie September 16, 2004 Share September 16, 2004 depends on how you drive and how you take care of it actually.. and whether you got a lemon even if it's from a renown brand.. hard to tell frankly.. my previous ride was 8 years old and mileage of about 130k without any major repairs.. just needed to change some seals that costs me $100+ only.. and i'm the 2nd owner.. Pisces69 6th Gear September 18, 2004 Share September 18, 2004 My earlier auto was a hyundai excel 1.5 auto. Scrapped it after 10 years & had more that 250k KM milage. No problems with the auto-box. My present car is a 89 corona cd (AT 171). Had my auto box rebuilt at about 320K KM when it became more difficult to move in Reverse. Cost about $2K. ( Should have just bought a 2nd hand one from the junk yard for about $300 ) Till now, about 350K KM & it's still OK (Keeping fingers crossed). Main thing is to have the ATF flushed regularly & fill with a GOOD QUALITY ATF. I now use a fully synthetic ATF. Although more expensive, I think it's money well spent. The main enemy to the auto-box is excessive heat. It breaks down the ATF then you have excessive wear & tear. A good synthetic ATF can tolerate high temperatures much better than normal ATF, so it gives good protection till your next flush. Hope this helps. Nightfalls Neutral Newbie September 18, 2004 Author Share September 18, 2004 thanks for your feedback! i have just instralled a ATF cooler, heard good feedback as a contingency for cooling of ATF, also won't robbed Engine cooling of its efficacy. invested 150 + 40 add another bottle of ATF Z1 one thing - unfortunately, my car a honda cvt insist on HOnda ATF-Z1, as the cvt gearbox was jointly developed with idemitsu. and the ATF Z1 is from idemitsu. so i guess it will be good to stick the recommendations. as for precautionary advice fouond from other experts - they were saying minimise or not to shift gears when cars moving D to lower and vice versa...if necessary to change gears when moving, minimise wear by easing off the gas pedal before the shift. A lot of manufacturers recommend ATF FLsuh around 40K km. But from an independant expert. He analyze that it should be around 20k km instead of usual 40k km. any take on this, bros? Astro 1st Gear September 18, 2004 Share September 18, 2004 Was wondering what are the good and bad driving habits that either shorten or prolong the lifespan of the auto tranny.. Just a question, do short waiting at traffic light warrants the shifting to nuetral ??
Soya Supersonic September 18, 2004 Share September 18, 2004 short stops leave in D.
Pisces69 6th Gear September 18, 2004 Share September 18, 2004 You're welcome. My old AT171 came with a ATF cooler already installed, so I was lucky. Try to check the type of ATF Honda ATF Z1 is. There are only a few types on the market like Dexron (the most common), Diaqueen, Type 3, etc. but car manufactures will use 1 of them & give it their own name & insist you only use it. This is to increase their profits as they usually sell it at a premium. You might try to check with Honda Japan on the website, if possible? or check the bottle if it might be stated in small print somewhere. My friend's Chrysler uses Dexron, but the agent here insist to use their house brand( Mog, or something like that) which is much more expensive & not even synthetic. When I questioned the sales manager about Dexron as US website say all Chrysler's use Dexron, he evasive but say someone tried Dexron here & it spoil the auto-box. I think he Bull-sxxt my friend. As for the shifting of gears, I leave it in "D" unless I parking or reversing. No need to change gears unless towing or going up/down hill & you don't want the box to shift back & forth( which is not good for it). Also, why buy an automatic car if you going to use it like a manual. Just enjoy what you paid extra for. My car manual suggest an AFT change at 60K km but only 4.5 lit. I prefer to do the full monty at 50K km (average of 18 lit per flush)for better protection & I use fully synthetic ATF now. Cheers

Snoopy44 Neutral Newbie September 21, 2004 Share September 21, 2004 I am just preparing some provision for repairs..... Hi, I am driving a Mazda 323 HB and my auto gear box is kaput now, costs me S1.2k for replacement with recondition parts from Japan. It is about 135,000k km now and have no choice but to send for repair...
Pisces69 6th Gear September 21, 2004 Share September 21, 2004 Sure, no problem. BTW, you're not the first one to ask me Leave your contact no. & I will get in touch with you. Which part of sg do you stay? And yes, yours is also an AT171.
Pisces69 6th Gear September 21, 2004 Share September 21, 2004 Hi Snoppy, Why don't you try to source a 2nd hand replacement from the junkyards. Much cheaper (abt $300) & I think a better choice than to get it repaired in sg. Some yards also will install it for abt $100. Had mine rebuilt for $2k plus & the results were not so good. The workmanship here sucks.
Snoopy44 Neutral Newbie September 23, 2004 Share September 23, 2004 Hi Pisces, Thanks, anyway, this mechanic did a very good job. Recommended by a friend. It turns out to be one stupid workshop who changed my timing belt early this year and did a shitty job so it affected the performance of the car and replaced my timing belt again... What a relief... saved S$1000+.... My advice to all out there is to use one that you are familiar with. I popped into that idiotic one because it was near my office and did not want to have the hassle of travelling to and fro to collect my car... ↡ Advertisement
