  1. Promptly replace these parts on your car and you find yourself stranded at the side of the road, waiting for a tow truck to save you! What's the worst thing that can happen to a driver? I would imagine that to be getting stranded at the side of road in the middle of the night, or maybe rushing to the carpark in the morning for an important meeting just to find out that your car wouldn't start. While a car is comprised of countless components, each part plays an important role for the car to work, and these parts do not last forever. Here are 5 crucial parts and how you can find out if they are due for a replacement. As its name suggests, the fuel pump's job is to feed fuel to the engine. In the past, mechanical fuel pumps are used in cars that utilised carburettors. Recent cars which are fuel injected usually have an in-tank mounted electric fuel pump, while direct injected cars have another high-pressure fuel pump located at the engine. Engines combust fuel in order to produce power, and if the fuel pump fails, the supply of fuel will be disrupted, causing you to be stranded at the side of the road. Failing symptoms: Difficulty starting car, loud whirring noise from fuel tank, engine sputtering or hesitation, abnormally poor fuel economy. The alternator perpetually charges your car's battery, as well as provides electricity for the car's operation. Without electricity, a car will not be able to run as the electrical system and components, the spark plugs and fuel pump, all require electricity to work. Hence, when the alternator fails, the battery won't be charged and will eventually go flat. Without electricity, there will not be any spark to ignite the fuel in the engine and your car will not be able to run. The alternator is one of the prime suspects when a car stalls in the middle of the journey and can't be restarted. Failing symptoms: Dim or flickering lights, electrical issues, dead battery, whining noise from alternator, warning light (battery symbol). Most, if not, all cars these days are equipped with an electric starter. The starter cranks the engine, and is the reason you can start your car simply by turning a key, or pressing a button. Hence, a spoilt starter means you won't be able to start your car. For cars with manual transmission, you can still get the car to start by push-starting it. But if you drive an automatic car, like most people these days, you are out of luck, there's no other way to start your car. The silver lining is that such a failure is unlikely to cause you to be stranded as it doesn't have any effect once the car has been started and not turned off. Failing symptoms: Engine won't crank or it makes a clicking and/or grinding noise when you turn the key or push the start button. Ignition coils produce a high-voltage electric pulse to the spark plug, so as to generate a spark to ignite the gasoline mixture in the engine's combustion chamber. This means that if the ignition coil is not working properly, the engine will not be able to combust fuel. This can result in engine misfiring, or totally fail to work in severe cases where all the ignition coils in an engine are faulty. Failing symptoms: Difficulty starting car, engine misfiring, rough idle, engine hesitation, exhaust back-fire, poor fuel economy, poor engine power. Most modern cars are water-cooled, this means that there will be a radiator. The radiator is a water to air heat exchanger. Its job is to cool down the water that courses through the engine and in turn, keep the engine in its cool, operating temperature. If the radiator fails, you will face an overheating issue, which can cause expensive damage to your engine. When you notice a leak in the cooling system of your car that caused it to overheat, it is not advisable to continue your journey, as it might aggravate the damage done to the engine. Failing symptoms: Engine overheating, visible coolant leak, low coolant in radiator and/or expansion tank. If you looked under the bonnet of most cars, you might notice many parts inscribed with DENSO's logo. DENSO manufactures a wide variety of automotive parts, ranging from engine parts, car electronic systems, car climate control (air-conditioning) systems, car safety systems such as airbag sensors to small motors for wipers, power windows and others for major car brands. 3. FINALLY! Some positive and heartwarming news to share. Thanks to Mothership for breaking it down into gif. https://mothership.sg/2021/06/traffic-police-officers-push-car/ According to the driver, Tan Wei Boon, his car's alternator was facing issues, and subsequently, the vehicle stalled and could not be jumpstarted again. An alternator is a type of electric generator that charges the car's battery and power the electrical system when the engine is running. Tan was out buying dinner for his colleagues back in office when the incident happened. During his failed attempt to restart his car, a black Mitsubishi Lancer, a police patrol car with its blinkers turned on showed up at the scene. It was drizzling at that time. In the video's caption, Tan wrote that he felt stressed when he saw the police approaching him at first. However, the pair of police officers who emerged from the patrol car then ran towards Tan and his stalled car. It turned out they had arrived to give the driver a hand by pushing his car out of the busy intersection onto a smaller road and into a nearby housing estate car park. The video extracted from the stalled car's rear camera showed the two police officers pushing the car from behind while the driver steered. The two officers had their face masks on at that time. At one point, the driver could be heard asking one of the officers to switch places: "Exchange now, I push, you drive?" But the officers continued to push the car to the nearby car park while the driver steered. Right after this short conversation, a car with hazard lights turned on slowed down behind the officers pushing the car. It appeared that the car was deliberately providing a buffer between the officers and oncoming traffic. However, the driver of the car then got out and ran towards the two officers and helped to push the stalled vehicle. As the car was pushed past a bus stop, the driver who got off his car to help called on public transport commuters to help out. One of them then joined in to push the car as well. According to the video's caption, the total distance the car was pushed was about 200m. Tan said he created the video to create awareness about the kind actions of all those who assisted. He also said he has written in to the police to compliment the public spiritedness of the police officers who stopped to help.

  5. Hong Kong’s MTR trains disrupted for 6 hours, morning commute thrown into chaos Mass Transit Railway (MTR) train services in Hong Kong were disrupted for six hours during peak hour on Tuesday morning (Oct. 16) due to a signalling fault, throwing the morning commute for millions into chaos. The disruption was said to be “unprecedented” as three lines broke down at the same time. They were the Island, Tsuen Wan and Kwon Tong lines. The signalling fault was first reported at around 5.30am. But at 10.18 am, a fourth line — the Tseung Kwan O line — was also affected. Commuters were told to take other forms of public transport instead. For those who were already inside the stations at the lobbies, they proceeded to the platform in 10-minute intervals. But for some who could not wait any longer, they chose to jump over the railings and leave the stations instead. Train services started to resume at around 11.45am. After the breakdown, operating staff had to drive the trains manually. As a result of the manual operation, trains ran at a slower speed — 23km/h instead of the usual 60km/h. Best in the worldHong Kong’s MTR has been acknowledged as the best in the world. Well-known vlogger NAS Daily even did a video on the MTR, calling it the “World’s Best Metro”. He also cited the HK$1 million fine MTR has to pay if a train is late for more than 30 minutes as the reason why trains are on time for 99.9 per cent of the time in the city. I think Nas Daily is a jinx.

  11. Hi Guys Just want to share with you my recent experience. Was driving a friend's car last nite (alone) and it stalled in the middle of a road at Yio Chu Kang and Serangoon Gd Way junction . Tried to restart but no luck. Heart started to pump very fast, kan chiong already , as the light was turning amber. Cars were trying to squeeze pass me. It was panic button . My left hand fumbled for the hazard light button and at the same time trying to restart the car (key hole also on the left). Suddenly in the midst of my misery, came a TP knocking on my window(didn't even notice his presence). He asked, "what happened"?. Told him car stalled cannot start, he says let's push it a side. I came down and together we pushed the car. It was an old MB 300SEL a German "Tiger" weighing almost 2 tons. Finally we managed to push it to the side of the road, thank him and off he went. Luckily for me, he happened to rode by, if not sure stand like a damn fool causing a massive traffic jam. I wonder how many of us have actually been in such situation. After last nite, I can understand how these people feel in their stranded car. Finally called AA and got the car towed. Anyone has a story to share? Cheers
  12. Hi Bros, I have a hypothetical question and it goes like this. Usually after servicing my car at a certain workshop, the mechanic would take the car for a test drive to see if there are any problems with the car after servicing. So what happens if: 1) During test drive, something else breaks down after servicing? (eg. radiator pipe burst, suspension noise starts to appear, tyre kenna nail puncture, etc.) 2) During test drive, the mechanic met with an accident with my car and my insurance doesn't cover him? Who is gonna pay for the damages? Appreciate your valuable advice/comments. Thanks.
  13. When car breaks down in my, there are too many workshops to remember for different states/areas. Is it possible for Singaporean to sign up AAM membership? It is about half the price of AAS membership.

[laugh] From STOMP: http://singaporeseen.stomp.com.sg/stomp/sg..._breakdown.html Singaporeans poke fun at LRT breakdown Singaporeans have made a spoof of the recent LRT breakdown with these hilarious pictures. At about 5.15pm on April 22, 11 passengers were evacuated from an LRT train when it stalled between Bukit Panjang and Senja stations. The passengers had to walk on the train track to Senja LRT Station. Netizens edited photos of the LRT breakdown to make light of the incident. One photo read: "Registration for Singapore marathon 2012 is now opened!" "Exciting new route from Pasir Ris to Joo Koon station." Another picture had this caption: "Uniquely Singapore". Some netizens on Facebook laughed along but some were not amused. Karen wrote: "The first one to reach the other end of the track without falling off wins the race." Dash said: "Additional goodies: risk your life, free sun-tanning and free 360 degree view from the top." Chris added: "I believe those commuters pictured would not be amused with this."
