1. https://cnalifestyle.channelnewsasia.com/wellness/old-person-smell-body-odour-sweat-2-nonenal-ageing-383531 Why does evolution create this unique odour in seniors? And yes, it's a thing. Even the Japanese have a word for it. You don’t have to have a canine’s superior olfactory system to know that we emit different odours at different stages of our lives. Babies, for instance, naturally smell pleasant even as they produce explosive diapers and regurgitated milk. During puberty, it's what smells like teen spirit – usually reminiscent of onion and sweat – that is likely to be the scent du jour. Your personal smell-scape changes again in your senior years and it’s not because you’ve adopted a new cologne or perfume. We’re talking about the “old person smell”, which you might have caught whiffs of in the just-vacated MRT seat, lift, taxi interior or if you live with elderly parents or grandparents: An amalgamation of Axe brand oil, moth balls and an unmistakable greasy, grassy odour. The smell is so distinct that the Japanese even has a term for it: Kareishu, which means the smell of gaining years. WHAT CREATES BODY ODOUR IN THE FIRST PLACE? Your personal brand of odour comes down to the sweat and substances that your body produces, said Associate Professor Lim Tit Meng, Science Centre Board’s chief executive. Generally, you have two kinds of sweat glands: Apocrine sweat glands (in hair-bearing areas such as the armpits and genital area) and eccrine sweat glands (everywhere on the body, including the palms and soles). “Apocrine sweat tends to contain more lipids and proteins, while eccrine sweat is mostly composed of water and electrolytes,” he said. “When bacteria break down these substances, the resulting odours can vary. Bacterial action on the lipids and proteins in apocrine sweat leads to the characteristic body odour.” If you're wondering what lipids are, they are an ingredient in sebum, the same pimple-causing stuff you’ve been fighting in your adolescent and adult life. “Sebum primarily comprises lipids, triglycerides, wax esters, squalene and cellular debris. When exposed to air and bacteria, these components can undergo oxidation and breakdown, resulting in a slightly oily and sometimes musty smell,” said Assoc Prof Lim. HOW DOES THE “OLD PERSON SMELL” COME ABOUT? A few things can give rise to this unique odour; one of which is 2-nonenal. A study on subjects between the ages of 26 and 75, noted that this colourless, insoluble, unsaturated aldehyde was detected only in those aged 40 years and older. Incidentally, 2-nonenal is the same compound found in aged beer and buckwheat, and has been described to smell greasy and grassy like fat and cucumber. The smell-inducing 2-nonenal is a by-product of omega-7 monounsaturated fatty acid after oxidation, said dermatologist Dr Eileen Tan from Eileen Tan Skin Clinic & Associates, Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital. "Age-related body odour likely has nothing to do with personal hygiene," said Dr Tan. According to the study, omega-7 monounsaturated fatty acid’s level in skin-surface lipids is found to increase up to six times with age. However, the cause of the increase is not clear. Another factor is sweating less. If there’s one good thing that comes out of getting older, it’s that you’ll sweat less, according to a 2021 study published in Skin Research And Technology by the International University of Health and Welfare in Narita, Japan. This could be caused by the age-related loss of collagen, which means your skin isn’t able to prop itself up as well as before. As a result, the sweat glands get compressed against the skin’s surface, making it harder for sweat to come out. (On a side note, this is also why seniors tend to suffer from heat exhaustion as they don’t sweat as much as younger people to regulate their bodies’ temperature.) Less sweat means less bacterial action, which then affects your body's odour. Furthermore, sebum production may also “decrease or change in composition, contributing to an altered scent”, said Assoc Prof Lim. These bodily changes, combined with diet, health conditions, medications and genetics, contribute to the unique “old person smell” characterised by “a more musty or stale scent”, he said. “The distinct scent typically becomes noticeable in later adulthood, around 60 years old or older” and can be set off and intensified by those aforementioned factors, said Assoc Prof Lim. WHAT’S THE EVOLUTIONARY PURPOSE OF THE "OLD PERSON SMELL"? Much like how we try to guess someone’s age by studying their appearance for physical attributes such as wrinkles and grey hair, odour could be another thing we unconsciously sniff out. In a study by Professor Johan Lundstrom, a brain science and cognitive psychologist from Monell Chemical Senses Center, volunteers were able to pick out the middle-agers based on smell alone. “It might be a way to distinguish the sick from the healthy – not overt sickness but underlying cell decay," said Prof Lundstrom. "The older we get, the more natural decay we have. But no one really knows why animals or people have this ability." Assoc Prof Lim agreed that the old person smell is evolution’s way to signal ageing and health. “Some theories suggest it could play a role in signalling social behaviours potentially linked to age-related immune changes.” CAN WE MINIMISE IT? Ageism may play a role in discriminating against the old people smell. In fact, the first study highlighted in this article found that people generally didn’t mind the odour and even found it less unpleasant and less intense than younger individuals and middle-agers – until they were told that the odour came from older people. Incidentally, the test subjects found that middle-aged men smelled the worst. If you are bothered by the smell, “maintaining a balanced diet rich in antioxidants and staying hydrated may help reduce the intensity of the old person smell”, said Assoc Prof Lim. “Additionally, using skincare products that promote skin health and moisture retention can be beneficial.” "Any scented products will help to mask the smell", said Dr Tan. Or try soaps that contain tannin-rich persimmon extract and let us know; it is said to dissolve 2-nonenal and help in eliminating odour. Or simply rock your personal brand of eau de toilette.

3. Interesting article and I also notice this trend among people around me https://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/why-some-women-choose-to-be-child-free SINGAPORE - Madam Shirlene Noordin is 52 this year, and she still gets asked when she will have children. The communications director, who has been married for a decade, used to find such questions intrusive, but they now just make her chuckle. When she was younger and answered that she preferred never to be a mother, friends and relatives often told her she would change her mind. Some even warned that she might regret her decision one day. Now, past her childbearing years, neither has happened. She and her husband continue to live a fulfilling child-free life. She is not alone. According to the latest population figures, there is a growing pool of married women in Singapore who do not have children. In 2020, 13.5 per cent of married women in their 40s did not have children - up from 9.3 per cent in 2010. This follows a similar pattern across all age bands, including those in their 30s and 50s and older. For some of these women, it is biology that has made the decision for them. But for the others, it is a choice driven by pragmatic, ideological or personal reasons. Since society still links womanhood to motherhood, many of them face pressure to procreate, and are often labelled selfish or even unnatural for not wanting children. It does not help that Singapore's total fertility rate has fallen to its lowest ever at 1.1 last year, after declining for the past decades. While married women who are childless by choice are still the exception, rather than the norm, an ongoing government review on women's issues has sought to understand why some couples have not jumped on the parenthood bandwagon.
4. A 65-year-old wealthy Indonesian man married a 19-year-old woman in May 2022. The 46-year age gap between the bride and groom became the talk of the town in Indonesia, where it was reported that the dowry paid by the man was some 500 million rupiah (S$46,535). The groom, Haji Sondani, also bought his bride, Fia Barlanti, a house and a car. The couple got married on May 18 in West Java, Indonesia, according to Indonesia media reports. However, the pair have since divorced, according to Malay Mail. The exact reason for the divorce was not disclosed, but speculation was rife barely two weeks into the marriage that the woman did not fancy her husband. She was seen publicly behaving in a manner that appeared cold towards him. Haji and Fia were seated side by side in front of their house for a recitation that was publicly recorded and witnessed by many others, but they did not appear close. Fia's body language, it was observed, was a far cry from her initial disposition towards her husband when they first became man and wife. At one point, she was seen playing with her phone and even shielded her face, as if embarrassed. MCFers, if it's too good to be true, that's because it probably is.

6. https://www.todayonline.com/world/woman-cashes-selling-her-urine-buyers-making-ice-cream-it-1794001 KUALA LUMPUR — A former professional photographer is now cashing in from selling her urine. Ms Kactus Kutie, who began making adult cam videos in 2016, told Daily Star she has a steel bladder and some of her peeing videos can go on for as long as 10 minutes. “My first video was of me peeing by a creek — a very short, very simple video but that was the catalyst for people ordering pee customs from me.” “I peed in bikinis, my underwear, overalls, trash cans, flower vases, outdoors, and so much more!” It is unclear where Ms Kutis is based. Ms Kutie said she sells a 88 millimeters medical cup of urine for £52 (S$95) but gives discounts to customers who want to buy larger volumes. She claims her customers have a whole host of uses for it, with one person even using it as a “popsicle”. “I also sell custom videos of me filling the cups if my fans want to see how it was made,” she added. On her secret for being able to produce so much urine, Ms Kutie said she usually drinks at least two giant cups of tea and one of her reusable cups of water. MALAY MAIL
7. Woman lost nearly 3 litres of blood after waterslide tore her uterus https://www.asiaone.com/world/woman-lost-nearly-3-litres-blood-after-waterslide-tore-her-uterus In a horrific case of a holiday gone wrong, Toni Steedman found herself bleeding heavily when a free-fall waterslide left her with her uterus ripped. While the incident took place back in 2017, Steedman is sharing her experience now in response to recent events that saw a British tourist break his neck on a similar ride. A mother of two, Steedman and her husband had brought their family to Tenerife, Spain to celebrate his birthday. They had planned to spend the day at Aqualand Waterpark, which is known for its array of waterslides, especially the Kamikaze - a 22m vertical descent that also happens to be the tallest waterslide in Europe. However, the slide was so steep and the velocity of the ride so great that water was forced into her body, resulting in a 7cm tear in her uterus. "The slide was really fast and when I hit the water at the bottom I felt something just burst inside me. When I stood up I felt as though I needed the toilet but as I moved blood started pouring from between my legs. It was making a trail as I walked from the pool," she recounted. Steedman was immediately brought to a hospital three minutes away, where the doctors quickly staunched the bleeding and gave her three blood transfusions. She was then sent to a bigger hospital further north where she underwent surgery to repair the tear. Due to the severity of the accident, Steedman wasn't able to leave the country for more than a week and was out of work for two months. She was also unable to claim insurance as she had not informed her insurance company that she would be going away. Steedman also stated that the lifeguards had neglected to tell her any of the safety precautions such as to cross her arms and legs, which would have prevented the accident from happening in the first place. In a viral video from July 8 this year, David Briffaut and his girlfriend can be seen sliding down head-first on mats at Aqualandia in Benidorm, Spain, but the moment they hit the water, his head can be seen snapping forward. It turned out that he had broken two vertebrae on the spot and had briefly lost consciousness. Despite the prompt medical attention, he continues to be on life support and medics have warned that he may be paralysed from the chest or waist down. Even though Steedman had been relatively lucky, has since recovered from her injury, and is still able to have children, Briffaut will require a lifelong caretaker. As the full extent of Briffaut's injuries remain unclear and he requires more surgeries, his family has since set up a crowdfunding page to help alleviate the costs of the procedures. The page has raised more than S$76,113 at the time of writing. Both waterparks have long been under fire, with unhappy holidaymakers leaving negative reviews on their page. In a statement, Aqualandia spokesman Maria Jose Marcos said, "We have video footage which plainly shows how the 23-year-old man did not follow the guidelines for Splash. Our lifeguard team informed him of the rules of the ride and he didn't obey them. So, Aqualandia cannot be held for the consequences of visitors failing to follow safety rules. Of course, Aqualandia helped him and his friends in every way and our insurance covered all the medical attention. Aqualandia has a long history - 34 years - and safety is our top priority." 8. Woman in China loses leg after getting trapped in escalator, but witnesses say it was her fault https://www.asiaone.com/china/woman-china-loses-leg-after-getting-trapped-escalator-witnesses-say-it-was-her-fault?xtor=EREC-16-4%5BEmarsys_Newsletter%5D-20190724&extid=6934d0cfb7b252f1ae9f0dbddf5ff88ca8637e77 An elderly woman lost her left leg in yet another escalator accident in China after half her body appeared to be 'swallowed' by the machinery. But witnesses say the victim may not have been entirely blameless after all. The freak incident occurred on Saturday (July 20) in a shopping mall in the Heilongjiang capital city of Harbin. Viral social media footage showed the shopper, believed to be in her 60s, holding onto the escalator handle while she remained trapped waist down in a gap. According to China News, by the time firefighters were able to free her, her left leg had already been severed at the knee and her right foot mangled. Family members claim that the escalator had been running normally before the steps gave way. "There wasn't even anywhere for her to jump to," one of them can be heard saying in a video by Pear Video. However, multiples witnesses say otherwise. Several eyewitnesses interviewed said that the woman had insisted on going on the escalator despite barricades surrounding it. "The escalator was under repairs, there were barricades all around. She removed the barricades. The escalator was just fixed and they were still testing it!" one shopkeeper told the camera. Said a bystander: "It was still under maintenance but she insisted. You couldn't stop her at all." Another witness agreed, saying: "They were still testing the escalator when she insisted on going on it. So she stepped on and everything gave way." The actual cause of the accident is still under investigation by authorities. Fortunately, the victim is now in a stable condition after undergoing emergency surgery at a local hospital. 9. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zAP9bZb5HVA A woman was taken to hospital after a door fell onto her at the carpark lift lobby of Alexandra Central Mall on Sunday evening (Feb 24). Several Stompers alerted Stomp to a video of the incident, which occurred on the fourth floor of the building at around 6.24pm. In the video, a man is seen entering the lift lobby through its doors. A woman then followed behind. As the pair waited for the lift, one door swung shut and came into contact with an adjacent door. This caused the adjacent door to suddenly fall on the woman, who is sent crashing onto the floor. Another man can be seen rushing into the lift lobby and helping the woman's male companion to move the glass off her. The two men then helped the woman to sit up. In response to a Stomp query, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said it received a call for medical assistance at 321 Alexandra Road at around 6.30pm and conveyed one person to National University Hospital. When Stomp visited Alexandra Central Mall on Tuesday (Feb 26) at around 5.40pm, the affected door had been removed. Warning signs had also been put up. Stomp has reached out to Alexandra Central Mall for comment. https://stomp.straitstimes.com/singapore-seen/door-falls-onto-woman-at-carpark-lift-lobby-of-alexandra-central-mall hope she is not seriously injured

11. https://www.thestar.com.my/news/nation/2018/03/08/cops-investigating-viral-slashing-video/ PETALING JAYA: Police are investigating a shocking video being shared on social media showing two men slashing a woman. The two-and-a-half minute video, which has gone viral, is alleged to have been shot at an industrial estate in Klang. "We are in the midst of tracing the whereabouts of the suspects in the video. Our initial investigation indicates that it was a fight between a husband and wife," said Selangor CID chief Senior Asst Comm Fadzil Ahmat when contacted. The video starts with a man dragging and beating a woman in front of a blue car, while several people witnessing the beating are heard screaming. Another man can be seen getting out of the car brandishing a weapon resembling a machete and walking towards the two, as the other man drags the woman towards the passenger side of the vehicle. Moments later the accomplice opens the car door as the suspect grabs the weapon and threatens to slash the woman. The two men drag the woman behind the passenger side door as one of the suspects swings the weapon repeatedly at the woman. The two then bundle the woman into the car as she is heard screaming for help before driving off. 14. Why?? Our world is such.... A Saudi court granted a couple's divorce after a woman accused the man of leaving his mother and family to be with her. The Saudi Gazette reports that they had no problems as a couple but that the way he treated his family bothered the wife. She told the judge, "I can never trust a man who does everything to keep his wife happy while he denies even a small favour to his mother." The woman said her husband, 29, took care of her, giving her expensive gifts and trips abroad. However, the woman felt that "a man who is not good to his own mother cannot be trusted. He may turn his back on me anytime in the future." The man was reported to have been in deep shock. He would do everything to keep her, he told the judge. He asked her, "Didn't I abandon my own family for you?" "Yes, and this is the very reason I want divorce from you," the woman retorted. The divorce was granted after she returned the dowry from her husband. http://www.asiaone.com/asia/woman-divorces-husband-choosing-her-over-mother

17. A Chinese national woman caused a commotion at Ang Mo Kio Hub yesterday after she pushed her boyfriend, who hit and shattered a glass door. The incident happened at about 2.25pm on 25 Feb in the popular mall located opposite Ang Mo Kio MRT station. Nearby shop staff say that the Chinese national woman, in her 40s, had been shopping in a mobile phone shop when her boyfriend, a 56-year-old Singaporean man appeared. The moment the woman saw her boyfriend, the two started quarreling. In the course of their fight, believed to be over money, the woman repeatedly hit and pushed the man. Just as they were passing a beauty salon, the woman pushed the man hard enough for him to lose his balance and fall towards the glass door. The glass door shattered after the man impacted it with his head and back as he fell. As a result of the commotion, police were alerted. Officers arrived shortly and were seen taking statements from the couple. The beauty salon happens to be owned by former TV actress Chen Hui Hui. Ms Chen told reporters that the man has apologised over the incident and has given her compensation for the shattered door. Link Feisty!
18. https://my.news.yahoo.com/honda-reports-exploding-takata-airbag-death-080959542--finance.html Honda said Thursday that an exploding airbag in one of its cars killed a woman in Malaysia, bringing to five the number of deaths linked to a defect in parts made by embattled Japanese supplier Takata. The previous four cases happened in the United States, but Honda said another woman died in a July crash after the rupture of a Takata-made airbag. "An airbag on one of our vehicles exploded abnormally and a Malaysian woman was killed," said a Tokyo-based spokesman for the Civic and Accord maker. At least three of the five deaths "were caused by an abnormal airbag explosion, including the latest case in Malaysia", Honda said, adding that the airbag's involvement in the other two cases had yet to be confirmed. The news came as the car giant announced an additional recall of more than 170,000 vehicles worldwide due to the risk that an explosion could send metal shards from the airbag's inflator hurtling at drivers. Police reportedly investigated at least one driver death in the US as a murder due to woman's grisly injuries, until their focus switched to the vehicle's airbag. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the US auto safety regulator, has expanded its "urgent" warning to owners of cars with affected airbags to take them to dealers to fix the problem. Takata is facing the biggest test in its 80-year history with lawsuits, calls for a criminal probe, and accusations of "deception and obfuscation" over the potentially deadly defect. Millions of vehicles produced by some of the world's biggest automakers, including Honda, Toyota and General Motors, are being recalled over the problem. - Cover-up claims - Honda has been named in a US lawsuit as a defendant, which alleges it conspired with Takata to hide the flaw for years. Quoting former Takata employees, the New York Times has reported that secret tests were conducted a decade ago to investigate the issue, but executives ordered the destruction of data that exposed design flaws. Takata's Tokyo-listed shares have lost about half their value since an investigation was opened in June. Attention has focused on a Takata plant in Mexico, with suspicions the defect may be linked to a chemical propellant used to inflate the airbags which can more easily rupture in areas with high humidity. On Thursday, the company confirmed that it had changed the chemical makeup of its airbag propellants, but insisted the move wasn't linked to design flaws. "We constantly update our products -- it has nothing to do with the recalls," a Takata spokesman told AFP. Takata has warned over a bigger-than-expected annual loss, but its top executives have stayed largely silent on the crisis. Founded in 1933 as a textile company, Takata evolved into an automotive parts giant that started selling airbags in the 1980s and now has dozens of plants and offices in 20 countries, including the United States,China and Mexico. The airbag division accounts for about 40 percent of its total revenue, which amounted to 556.99 billion yen ($4.88 billion) last fiscal year. Major automakers have shied away from discussing their future relationship with Takata, but a quick switch is unlikely given the Japanese giant's foothold in the sector. Still, parts sourcing for the 2019-2020 model years is happening right now, and a Toyota executive last month said the world's biggest automaker wants to replace the defective part "with something of better quality".
19. Deciding that enough was enough, one woman in Singapore has made it her personal mission to nab all adulterous married men looking for sexual flings online. The woman said that she has gotten evidence of the cheating ways of some men who claimed to be married and are looking for sexual partners on a famous online chat app. She showed photos of the men, who she approached and who she said had admitted that they were looking for flings. One of them said that he had problems in his marriage and was looking for a way out. She says that such incidents only make her more determined to root out the problem of adulterous men online and that she will continue her acts as the masked female vigilante. The woman’s mother-in-law allegedly forced her to have sex with male strangers after they found out that her husband was infertile in 2010, Hubei Television reported. The woman refused and left Hubei for the country’s south to escape the arrangement. Her father-in-law, who also opposed the arrangement of his wife, came to her workplace in Guangdong province to take her home with a promise that she would not be forced to sleep with strangers any more. However, at a hostel near a train station the old man raped her and made her pregnant, the woman said. But the father-in-law said he was seduced by the woman who told him that she was willing to bring a grandson to the family. They had sex repeatedly in the following years, the father-in-law said. The family members decided to go to the court to settle the dispute.
