Genie47 1st Gear January 5, 2005 Share January 5, 2005 (edited) Save your money. Any cheap engine oil syn engine oil will do for a relatively new car. 53 is not bad. You can consider but a tad heavy for a new car. Best to go for a 30wt oil for better FC and better startup wear. Spectra Neutral Newbie January 5, 2005 Author Share January 5, 2005 So what is cheap and good? Royal purple?
Genie47 1st Gear January 5, 2005 Share January 5, 2005 RP, Conoco Hydroclear, cxxxxxe. These are pretty good so far if you keep to the 10k OCI. If you are a gentle driver, can aim for 15k OCI .
Kelpie 2nd Gear January 6, 2005 Share January 6, 2005 (edited) 1. Wah say, I'm eager to change my crrent 5W50 to 5W40 and I still have about 1K more to 5K. It seems that Delphi has 0W40, is it a better choice than 5W40? 2. Btw, with so many brands around here, is there a comparsion chart of some kinds between brands in the web? 3. Why does a performance car needs a heavy weight oil? Delphi 5W50 is approved for use by BMW and Porsche. Genie47 1st Gear January 7, 2005 Share January 7, 2005 (edited) Temperature. Prevents the oil from being cooked too thin. Go to www.bobistheoilguy.com for a oily education. Edited January 7, 2005 by Genie47
Yeobh 4th Gear January 7, 2005 Share January 7, 2005 (edited) Yes, I believe like honda the oil may have original from Idemitsu. Over in Europe and US, BMW ,VW and Mercedes are very very strict with use of engine and transmission oil during warranty period. They claim that aftermarket oil just do not meet thier demanding spcifications and will not hesistate to null and void the warranty. Looks like proprietory oil ,oil sump pan without drain plug, and seal-for life transmission is the trend and not in the far future the Japanese luxury cars will also be force to go this way by peer pressure and industry standards Edited January 7, 2005 by Yeobh
Kelpie 2nd Gear January 8, 2005 Share January 8, 2005 Hi there, 1. I find the "Auto Stuff" section in www.howstuffworks.com very educational. At least, its more layman with diagrams and graphics. 2. Again, hard to find a billboard for cxxxxxe ranking or comparison. Regards,
Genie47 1st Gear January 8, 2005 Share January 8, 2005 (edited) There is no such thing as a ranking for oil. Different engines will like different oil. An oil that gives the lowest wear will be the best oil for the engine. Edited January 8, 2005 by Genie47
Vit4wd 1st Gear January 8, 2005 Share January 8, 2005 Hi Genie47, Thanks for all your past advise on engine oil. Anyway, I've switched from Shell Helix Ultra 15W50 to Delphi Synthetic 5W50. It seems to be better. No dip in oil level for past 2 months. Previously, I would have seen a drop in oil level when using Shell. And at $68 for 5l, it is cheaper than Shell's $86 for 4l. Kelpie 2nd Gear January 8, 2005 Share January 8, 2005 Hi there, 1. Good to know that someone is using Delphi as I do. 2. Have you ever consider Delphi 5W40 or 0W40? 3. The Kah Motor service engineer told me that Delphi oil tend to be darker when I did my oil change for 1K servicing. Regards,
Genie47 1st Gear January 9, 2005 Share January 9, 2005 When an engine oil is darker, I will always suspect there is moly inside
Kelpie 2nd Gear January 9, 2005 Share January 9, 2005 Pardon me, what is a moly? Regards,
Genie47 1st Gear January 9, 2005 Share January 9, 2005 Molybdenum. A metal that fills up all the rough spaces and make them smooth.
Kelpie 2nd Gear January 10, 2005 Share January 10, 2005 Too technical for me but I do wish to know whether this is a pro or con? Regards,
Genie47 1st Gear January 11, 2005 Share January 11, 2005 Depends. Some oil have it some oil don't but most people like moly to be in the oil. It is good in many cases.
Kelpie 2nd Gear January 12, 2005 Share January 12, 2005 1. I will be discarding my delphi 5W50 in about a week time and to be replaced by Delphi 0W40 or 5W40. Is it alright to mix one of these with the remaining 1L of 5W50 leftover by the previous oil change? 2. Given that 0W40 and 5W40 are same price, which would you prefer and why? Thank you.
