Engine vibrate violently?

Somehow, I noticed that my car engine vibrate much more after I replaced the car battery. I drive a auto car and noticed the more than usual vibrations when I stop at traffic lights.

Just wonder is there any link with new batteries and the car's ECU - that controls the idling timing of the car's engine?

Somehow this just doesnt make sense to me .... any pointers from the veteran here?

Most european makes and models including some Asia top range models have "keep alive memory chip" that has learning ability programmes. Once you discontinue the battery , the memory losses all its collected data - result is poor idling and acceleration, loose of seating setting, radio setting, keyless memory etc etc.

Before removing the battery terminals always use a simple power supply device that will provide the necessary 5 to 12 volt Dc supply to the memory and module.

This makes sense then. The radio settings are all gone. I'll then have to make a trip to the AD to tune back everything then. Somehow, the ECU should have a backup power storage la....

Hopefully my AD wont charge me any money 'cos I didnt buy battery from them. Their price is [knife]

Some system can be restore by driving over a certain distant - "when the car battery has been disconnected it may take up to 320 km of driving to re-program other computer functions such as

Thanks man, will monitor the car for the next few days.

CAS mech should plug such device into the car to retain the memory so that the ECU will not be powerless and forget its memory setting. Thought this should be a common problem for most modern cars. Cannot suka suka just take out the batteries and change new ones just like that!!

Neutral Newbie

wait till they encounter some higher end models, change of battery without backup == have to reset OBD [laugh] or sometimes even frying the ecu/memory [sly]

Did u just chgd the battery only. are there other things that chgd also.

what is the rpm at idle and what car is that?

How bad is the vib, isit erractic or slightly more ?

Somehow the car has more "power" when I stop at traffic lights. Have to step onto the brake very hard but car jerk very hard, just like inside a run-down taxi during the old days....

Normally power is related to moving and not stopping. brakes power maybe.

I think u shd take it easy and not be too sensitive and put too high expection on your car. slight vib on certain car are norm esp below 1.6 cc.

K, think the idling rpm is now higher then before. I suspect the ECU forget its setting after the battery is taken out within standby power. Anyway car still under warranty so sending it to AD to check.

Ok, keep us posted on the outcome of the inspection and service by AD. They shd be able to find out what are the fault in the ECU and rectify as necessary. cheers

Hi guys,

I'm a noob when dealing with cars. Just got myself a 2nd hand 94Sunny right after I pass my driving test.

Been driving for about 2 weeks now. Now it seems that my engine vibrate violently whenever I start the car in the morning. It is ok once I start moving off.

My uncle is said it is a timing issue, but I don't understand what he means. Anyone care to explain to me [;)]

And is it a dangerous thing? Sending the car for alignment next week so might as well as the guy to solve this problem for me.

Thanks a lot for your help.

Hi Bro,

its suprising no one suggested a timing belt issue :)

i had a 99% similar experience as yours when my timing belt was faulty.

don't have to take my word for it but you can start by looking at your timing belt.

IMHO, I am 90% sure that its the timing belt. the symptoms are all there.

mine was a hard trial and error case. suspected engfine mounts, then exhaust then a whole load of others before realised that its timing belt.

don't make the same mistake.

check out your belt 1st.

100% sure not misfire or ignition timing issue.

misfire and ping is not like what you descrived.

engine mounts faulty usually vibrate at idle only, should not vibrate at speed when moving regardless of speed i think.

dolve it soon.

cheers.

Bros,

Some update for all on my problem that is resolved.

The ECU is not affected by the change in Battery. According to the mech at C&C, ECU would not be affected if batt is changed. The problem is due to the dirty throttle. Incidently, this happens at the same time. After cleaning the throttle and tuning up the engine, the drive now is very smooth. I can hear the smooth reving of the engine whenever I depressed the accelerator.

As for the batt, the original was Varta 35ah and now changed back to the same Amaron GO 35ah. Since there's no change and it cost me less than 100 bucks, I've no complaint.

CAS is quite on the ball. I've complained and they came back fast with facts (ie show me picture of my old battery somemore) and ask me to send my car back to them for a check (which I supposed it's FOC??). Quite Paisei for making so much noise in the first place [:p]

After all this, I really wonder what the AD really do to service the car? Shouldnt they clean the throttle everytime I send for servicing? My mileage is moderate at only 37K, driving for 2.5yrs. Pay so much just for oil change only? I wonder I wonder.....
