Fan Belt Squeal - What causes it ?

The belt has too many glazed spots ( very shining patches) and that cause the belt to slip momentarily. High time to inspect the belt for glaze spots and surafce cracks.

My old Hyundai Excel also has this problem maybe Hyundai does have a design problem on the belt. [lipsrsealed] I think the new ones should be better

I'm driving a vintage 99'Atos GLSA

The fan-Belt always squeal - especially

when the weather is cold/wet

or when the engine is cold.

My mechanic - Rayspeed at Pioneer Circus - had

adjusted the belt tension numerous times,

but the problem still recurr.

Now the mechanic says, "

More likely the belts are shiny as our bro here says. Maybe the batch they bought more likely to "shine" and cause the slip and squealing.

I used to work in a belt manufacturing company and application of belt dressing is definitely not the way to solve the problem. As belt is made from rubber, it doesn't really react well with lubricants and the chemical effect will shorten the belt's life. Apart from that it makes the pulley dirty and messy too.

Squeaks are generally caused when the belt slipped and the 3 main reasons for such case to happen is:

Tension

Belt maybe under tensioned hence causing the belt to slip more than usual. Elongation of a good V-belt shouldn't be more than 5%-10% of its length.

Alignment

Pulley misalignments (divided into angular and parallel) causes the belt to warp irregularly and noise will be generated once the engine starts turning.

Wear and tear

The pulley maybe subjected to wear and tear hence the belt might not be sitting at its optimum position. There is a gauge which could be inserted into the groove to measure if the wear is still within allowable range. On another hand if the bottom of the V belts is shiny, then its significant that the pulley is worn. V-belts only uses its sides as the contact point and not the bottom.

Apart from this, there are other factors such as material composition of the belt. Reputable brands like Bando (Made in Indonesia & Malaysia), Mitsuboshi (Made in Thailand) and Gates (Same as Unitta) (Made in Thailand & Japan) are the major original OE suppliers.

Hope i provide some help.
