Neutral Newbie

I am going to buy my first car and i've more or less decided on a 2nd hand civic vti. Being my first time, i have a couple of questions that i need bros and sis here to enlighten me.

1) i've been to car mart at kaki bukit. saw lots of VTI. They are mostly 2002 cars of capacity 1500cc. Are they of the same model if i were to buy a new one at KM now?

2) Is it true that those VTI that are 2003 and after do not run on CVT already? Coz i've heard from my friend that CVT got tons of problems.

Looking forward to drive a civic soon!

thanks

yup there are some problems with the pre 2003 batch, those using CVT. I think it's faulty CVT gearbox.....do not touch those. The later models are running on normal auto gearbox.

I agree with accordvtec, go for a new car. It's ard 75k so it make more sense to get a new one.

Civis costs very high insurance premium.

I deduce that you are cost conscious as you are buying a used Civic vs. new and thus my recommendation would be to choose something else.

Honda parts are also exspensive, but I msut admit that Honda is a good ride.

Hi, I cannot fathom why one would still buy a used car at today's car prices. esp. a Japanese make (which is cheap enough).

No offence to my above statement pls.

I myself downgraded to a Civic last Sept in expectation of my baby (prev. a 2-door Conti model).

Am not too sure about servicing costs on Civic. But have been told that that is not cheap vs. the Toyotas.

You may want to look at Sunday's Straits Times (3rd April) which I believe will give you some idea as to what kind of value you will be getting when you buy a car. E.g. gross profit for an Altis is $13k vs. $7k for a Civic. Why make Borneo Motors richer? Or would it be better to just get something which is of more value for your money?

If real cheap, then get a Hyundai which will serve the purpose. The cheap price more than offset the well-known higher FC.

the reason why i am getting an 2-3 year old civic because i intend to change car in 4 years time and i do not wish to take the initial depreciation

i've done some calculations... if i take a old civic + 7 years loan or a new civic + 10 year loan dun make any difference at all.

thanks bro for confirming that the pre 2003 batch cvt got prob. will not look into them anymore..

but i believe i'll still go for a second hand... either i can find a traditioal auto transmission civic or look into altis..

any suggestions?

I am not privy to the reason why you have the aim to change car in 4 years time. So accurately forecast as if you have oredi pre-ordered a new car which will only be delivered in 4 years time...

Allow me to share my view. I first bought a car (a brand new conti model) in June 2003. That was when COE was $31k. Good thing then was that my model was a conti so the higher the COE price the better for me as that would mean less for the dealer. And I get higher paper value.

At that moment, I had also looked at a 7.5yr old Nissan Micra. And even test drove the car. It was then going for $22-23k. I hesitated and did not buy that just because the owner did not want to reduce by another $1k.

On hindsight, I regretted the decision as I sold my conti model for a Civic last September. So I would have been better off if I had purchased the Micra. At least I would not have lost so much $.

Therefore my advise is that if it is just a car which you need for mobility and esp. if you have the view to sell in 4 years, get the cheapest you can so you lose the least later. And get a new one (if Auto) so that your first 3 yrs can drive in peace.

what would happen if u delay your purchase for 1.5year?

meaning u pretend to own a car but actually the money that should go into the car , instead goes to your savings for time being?

would that be ok?

first time buying a car?

This is best if u can bear with no car for 1.5years. [thumbsup]

All the money saved can be used for downpayment hence smaller loan => lower interest to pay! [scholar]

70K for manual & 72K for auto to be precise.
