Don't touch that wire

Good advice from volvotuning.com:

It is time to tell Volvo owners about an unwritten rule; don't touch that wire if you don't know where it goes. The problems that one can start by not knowing what they are touching can have results that can cost you in money and time. The newest cars that are out have a network of systems that can be directly affected by one another. If you are not sure the wires you are tapping into could be at risk, then don't touch them. If you are still sure you want to go ahead, then request from your dealer if they could supply you with a proper wiring diagram.

The introduction of airbags years ago has made many cars safer than ever. With that are quite a few wires in the main airbag harness called twisted pairs. These wires are very important and should not be tampered with. Also, the seatbelts in all of the newest Volvos have a pyrotechnic charge that detonates during an accident. These wires should never be spliced into for 2 reasons. Not only will a SRS fault code be set, but also they could possibly detonate unintentionally. The rear seatbelts in all of the newer cars also have this feature, so this applies to ALL the seat belts.

The most famous of problems encountered come from the installation of upgraded audio systems. With any new aftermarket audio components introduced into the car, you should be very careful when you splice into any existing wire harnesses. The use of sheet metal screws that are too long have also been seen by many of us and can do major damage if they hit the wrong part of a wire harness. This can lead to many hours of fault tracing of the electrical system, which could be avoided in the first place.

Honestly after DIY installing Boost gauge, turbo timer and radio antenna switch I guess it's not too tough to do some electrical work/mod but just be double sure before cutting any wires.

Also it helps to disconnect the battery or airbag fuse before starting electrical work near the steering/ignition area.

So u r going to leave the HU stock? The front speakers in my dad's S40 has officially 'retired'....for vocals, the singer seems to be like having a sore throat. I was contemplating to change to better front speakers...until I read ur post [shakehead]

Unless SM Mtrs become an affordable ICE expert, i'd rather keep it stock for now. Actually, the sound not that bad lah (certainly better than some of the "upgrades" that ICE experts have done to my previous ride). Think changing your sore throat speakers wouldn't affect the electronics at all, rite?. Juz wouldn't touch the HU by performing surgery on it to tap signals n such.

The front can take only 5.25". 2 options available. Either ask SM to change a new pair of originals or get a better pair of 5.25". There's an element of risk in the latter option cos an amp may be required to drive the speakers.

I don't know which variant is yours but you can tune you set.

There are 14 variants of the HU radios (not counting the non-CAN variants for the 40 series). There's a 400, 600 and 800 series, with different market variants.

However, when equipped with the software controlled EQ, all head units respond to the EQ function from the same activation. Here is a straight Cut & Paste from my document:

----------8<----------

With the radio switched off, press and hold down [sOURCE], press [Volume] to power on the radio, and continue to hold down [sOURCE] for at least 5 seconds.

- Press [sOURCE] to select a function

- Turn [sOURCE] to adjust value

Thks for the comprehensive document. But my dilemma is not the HU tuning but rather the lack of confidence in the so called ICE experts to safely and expertly wire up my amp, tubes n crossovers without something like the airbags going off each time i turn on the radio.... haha[laugh]
