Erikkson Neutral Newbie June 24, 2005 Share June 24, 2005 (edited) Hi guys, I am a noob here, just want to know the pros and cons of the Toyota Vios 1.5L M/T and the Mitsubishi Lancer 1.6L M/T I haven't test drive the cars yet, so I don't really know the performance. But from what I can see in the showroom: Vios Pros: -Nicer interior, better looking upholstery -Better looking dashboard -Tachometer looks newer -Sporty looking -Front seats are height adjustable, backrest can adjust to fit the spine -Rear seats are higher -Car is lighter 970kg, thus assuming lower fuel consumption Cons -Interior less spacious -Car is shorter and narrower -No foldable rear seats -Smaller tyres -Smaller engine capacity of 1.5L -Sales engineer at Leng Kee not so friendly -Tachometer is in the center between front passenger and driver, ON TOP of the dashboard, may obstruct driver's view Lancer Pros: -Larger tyres -Tried and tested car -Car is longer and wider -Larger engine capacity of 1.6L -Interior more spacious -Foldable rear seats -Sales engineer more helpful -Tachometer is directly in front of the driver Cons -Interior and upholstery looks old, like those 80s or 90s cars -Tachometer looks like those taxis type -No frills interior -No mudguards, but the brochure said got mudguards -Front seats not height adjustable -Rear seats are lower -Car colours are limited (silver, blue, red, black) -Car is heavier about 1100kg, thus assuming higher fuel consumption Does anyone have any experience in owning or driving these 2 cars before? Or even if u have not, can u share ur experience? Particularly in terms of ENGINES and PERFORMANCE. Thanks a lot for ur feedback. Genie47 1st Gear June 24, 2005 Share June 24, 2005 Go test drive the cars first and make up your own mind. We can't help you much here. Both are pretty good in their own departments.

Well I am looking at a good balance of all 4 factors...but I am stuck between the 2 cars unless i test drive. I am not sure what to look out for during the test drive, and how to actually test the car on the road. Edited June 24, 2005 by Erikkson
Benhew05 Neutral Newbie June 24, 2005 Share June 24, 2005 Very subjective leh... For me, I test drive cars as if like ... looking for faults and reasons NOT to buy the car. Somehow heart rules over mind...
Diesel 1st Gear June 24, 2005 Share June 24, 2005 I have test-driven both cars in both auto & manual transmission before & my views on the 2 cars: 1. Performance - Even at a slightly lower capacity, the Vios is better than the Lancer. Lancer is more superior in handling turns & corner. The Vios gave me a feeling as if i was driving a compact hatch. The vios can launch much faster than the Lancer from still. The Lancer felt stable at higher speeds, though it was noiser than the Vios. 2. Ride Comfort/Quality - Vios is crammed with limited legroom, esp. for tall dudes, probably a wrong move to include thick luxurious cushions for the small interior. Lancer has a sportier suspension setup than the vios, just stiff enough for my liking. Sound insulation wise i think the Vios has done a better job. 3. Value - The Vios has a more complete package as it comes with the bodykit standard. I think Lancer will cost a few Ks more for the Sports Version (which u might as well include the Altis/Sunny in your choice) If i had to choose i will go for the Lancer, as my criteria for the car is Space, followed by Performance, then Looks. The City is quite a good buy at that price range too, if u dun mind the looks . The DSi model already packs a punch when i drove it , coupled with selespeed mode makes it more fun to drive! Jkl78 Neutral Newbie June 24, 2005 Share June 24, 2005 like ben hv said.... it's very subjective..... for me, it's the personal feel... the feeling of drivin the car must b comfy 4 me.... it's like do u enjoy driving tis car???
Khimwoon Neutral Newbie June 24, 2005 Share June 24, 2005 when u sit into the car, driving it, up shifting gear, down shifting, how ur butt feel etc etc then choose the one that make u feel good... although lancer using a older engine that is equally tough... but to look sporty u need to fix up a sport kit either when buying or at later part which is a few grand more than vios... go drive it then feel for urself wat u like... u will love it... Erikkson Neutral Newbie June 24, 2005 Author Share June 24, 2005 (edited) I have test-driven both cars in both auto & manual transmission before & my views on the 2 cars: Hi Diesel, appreciate ur valuable feedback. I will take into account of ur observations. The Honda City (the one with the big backside small head right?) design is part of the reason why it's not one of my leading contenders for a new car, performance aside I haven't tested it yet. Hi guys, thanks all for the info. Just want to let u know I really appreciate them thus far, as it will help me decide how should I spend the $55k. The reason why I post this here is precisely the Vios and Lancer are quite close and it's hard to decide. Keep them coming. Thanks again :) Edited June 24, 2005 by Erikkson
Andrewy Neutral Newbie June 24, 2005 Share June 24, 2005 Well my friend owns Vios. So far so good, no complain from him. He has been driving for 1 yr plus with mileage of 40Km+. I tested Lancer b4, the pick up is poor compared to VVTi engine. In terms of driving comfort, VVTi is till better(I feel). Also VVTi mileage is better. Vios can easily hit 14-15Km/l. From pm: Vios will be a better buy bro, better FC better engine and performance better aftersales svc better resale. no regrets changing from Lancer to a Vios... Hmm I am getting a better perspective of the cars now. Edited June 24, 2005 by Erikkson
Diesel 1st Gear June 24, 2005 Share June 24, 2005 Eventually it's your call. Like what most mentioned, ask yourself what u want in the car... we all have different criteria when deciding on what/which car to buy... It's your money & YOU should decide how to spend it. If u get crappy attitude from SEs look for another one that provides better service. If time is not an essence u should test drive all the cars within your budget...afterall not all cars are equal Go try out the City see if it fits what u want. I find the interior much more spacious than the Vios.

Mlee8088 Neutral Newbie June 24, 2005 Share June 24, 2005 Vios pick up is better and also better in FC. Obvious reason is that the body is much lighter..the difference to Lancer is about 140kg. Vios body is light...and the body material is softer. The room is smaller as well. Whereas Lancer body is slightly solid than Vios, bigger in space.. U pay what u get and u save on what u are to give up.
Benhew05 Neutral Newbie June 24, 2005 Share June 24, 2005 (edited) Do consider about the after sales maintenance cost as well Lancer not cheap, heard from colleague of mine... cost $200+ for his second servicing VIOS - you can go to VOGS forum club to find out more On the move, my personal feel sway towards VIOS coz somehow has the edge in response and handling That's just my own feeling here.... Both are good budget cars though Edited June 24, 2005 by Benhew05 ↡ Advertisement
