  1. THIS WEEKEND .... GO OUT AND MAKE FRIENDS BETTER STILL GO OUT TO MAKE LOVE ...... THE LATTER NOT ABOUT GEYLANG TYPE you know what I mean People of working age who live alone increase their risk of depression by up to 80% compared with people living in families, says a Finnish study. It says the main factors are poor housing conditions for women and a lack of social support for men, who are both equally affected. The study tracked the use of anti-depressants in 3,500 Finnish people. A mental health charity said people who lived alone must be given outlets to talk about their problems. The study authors highlight the fact that the proportion of one-person households in Western countries has increased during the past three decades, with one in every three people in the US and the UK living alone. The participants in the study, published in BioMed Central's public health journal, were working-age Finns; 1,695 were men and 1,776 were women, and they had an average age of 44.6 years. 2. "ASIAONENEWSSHOWBIZ Quan Yifeng pleads guilty to mischief Television host Quan Yifeng yesterday pleaded guilty in court to one count of mischief in an incident involving a cabby more than a year ago, and could be placed on probation. The 37-year-old Taiwan- born MediaCorp artist admitted to pulling out the fare meter and spilling water on the receipt printer in Mr Chan Swee Kong's taxi during a dispute on June 26 last year. The damage amounted to about $70. Two other charges - comprising another count of mischief and one count of criminal force - will be taken into consideration when she is sentenced on Dec 29. Quan, whose name appears as Chuan Yi Fong in the charges, is represented by lawyers Subhas Anandan and Sunil Sudheesan. Mr Anandan appealed for probation for Quan. He referred to her mental state at the time of the offences, and said that she was "labouring under the effects of her depression" and it substantially contributed to her inappropriate response. District Judge Low Wee Ping ordered a probation report, which meant that the artist could be put on probation. Judge Low said a probation report is "seldom" called for, for an offender over 20 years old, unless there are exceptional circumstances. The order was made after Quan's psychiatric report was submitted in court. Mr Anandan also requested the judge to not take her public altercation in 1996 into consideration, as it happened a long time ago. Then 23 years old, Quan was fined $1,000 for fighting with a bowling-alley attendant. Yesterday's hearing arose from an incident in which Quan commented on the bad service of the 53-year-old cabby, after he refused to help load her luggage into the boot of the taxi. The court heard that soon after, Mr Chan slammed on the brakes to avoid a collision with a vehicle, throwing the TV host and her then 11-year-old daughter forward. The situation worsened when Quan messed up Mr Chan's belongings and damaged the taxi equipment. She had earlier denied guilt. Yesterday, Quan wore a worried look as she was accompanied to court by her grandaunt, former TV host Mary Chen Ming Li, and her manager, Ms Teo Lian Huay. However, Quan - sporting a red hairdo and a black blouse - was collected during the hearing. Mr Anandan later told reporters that she is "doing well". She initially called for a press conference after the hearing but it was called off at the eleventh hour. Mr Anandan said it was "inappropriate to comment" on the case before the sentencing. The maximum penalty for mischief is a year's imprisonment and/or a fine. " Depression seems to be the latest 'cool' word...

  4. Kitten killer claims to be depressed over parents' divorce ANN - Monday, March 7SendIM StoryPrint Serdang (The Star/ANN) - A Malaysian woman who gained notoriety after a video showing her abusing kittens was uploaded on Facebook has apologised. She claimed that she was suffering from depression after her parents divorced. "I could not control my emotions at that moment, but now realise I had made a terrible mistake after watching the video myself," said Chow Xiao Wei, whose cruel act was captured on a CCTV in a backlane near here. The 20-year-old said she regretted her actions and was prepared to face the consequences. She was also willing to do community service with the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA). The five-minute video was posted on Facebook about a week ago. In the CCTV footage, a person wearing a cap is seen hitting kittens with an umbrella, then stomping and kicking them to death. After the video went viral, Chow's acquaintances, who recognised her from the video, posted her name and phone number online. Chow soon began receiving threatening SMS messages and warnings on her Facebook account. Out of fear, she quit her job as a sales assistant and lodged a police report. Chow claimed that she was suffering from depression at that time as her parents had divorced. "Please give my daughter a second chance," pleaded her mother Cheong Poh Ling, who accompanied her to the press conference at Seri Kembangan assemblyman Ean Yong Hian Wah's office. Cheong said she had taken her daughter to a psychologist after hearing about the video, though she had not watched the video herself. "I had to close my stall at the market because reporters kept coming around," she said. A group of animal lovers, including members of Petpositive and Malaysian Dogs Deserve Better (MDDB) gathered outside Ean Yong's office, demanding to meet Chow. A few representatives from animal welfare groups were later allowed to meet Chow -- with Ean Yong present. MDDB is planning to file charges against Chow for animal cruelty, under Section 44 of the Animals Act 1953. If found guilty of abusing the kittens, Chow faces either a fine of 200 ringgit (US$66), six months in prison or both. Then why didn't she kick her parents and kill them instead? Lame excuses! If she wasn't caught, she wouldn't admit to it.

  6. WHY MEN ARE NEVER DEPRESSED: Men Are Just Happier People-- What do you expect from such simple creatures? Your last name stays put. The garage is all yours. Wedding plans take care of themselves. Chocolate is just another snack. You can be President. You can never be pregnant. You can wear a white T-shirt to a water park. You can wear NO shirt to a water park. Car mechanics tell you the truth. The world is your urinal. You never have to drive to another gas station rest-room because this one is just too icky. You don't have to stop and think of which way to turn a nut on a bolt. Same work, more pay. Wrinkles add character. Wedding dress $5000. Tux rental-$100. People never stare at your chest when you're talking to them. New shoes don't cut, blister, or mangle your feet. One mood all the time. Phone conversations are over in 30 seconds flat. You know stuff about tanks. A five-day vacation requires only one suitcase. You can open all your own jars. You get extra credit for the slightest act of thoughtfulness. If someone forgets to invite you, he or she can still be your friend. Your underwear is $8.95 for a three-pack. Three pairs of shoes are more than enough. You almost never have strap problems in public. You are unable to see wrinkles in your clothes. Everything on your face stays its original color. The same hairstyle lasts for years, maybe decades. You only have to shave your face and neck. You can play with toys all your life. One wallet and one pair of shoes -- one color for all seasons. You can wear shorts no matter how your legs look. You can "do" your nails with a pocket knife. You have freedom of choice concerning growing a mustache. You can do Christmas shopping for 25 relatives on December 24 in 25 minutes. No wonder men are happier.
