  1. I've been watching the first few episodes of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. There's obviously plenty to unpack about the story and the larger Game of Thrones universe, but the one thing I want to zoom in on is jousting. There's no spoilers involved here, but jousting features somewhat significantly in the first few episodes. Obviously the show is fictional, but it draws a lot of references and inspiration from the Medieval times. And jousting was a very real sport: Yes, there's some inherent military basis for it, but it eventually involved into a sport that was popular among nobility. As it is depicted in the show, and no doubt true in real life, it looks absolutely brutal. Strip away the particular pageantry and chivalry of it, and it is at its core a form of entertainment. Brutal, violent entertainment. A couple of days ago, something popped up somewhere on my social media feed (I would like to think that it wasn't specifically suggested to me by the algorithm, but rather maybe someone else commenting about. That, or I may have to reconsider some of my personal content choices). It's apparently called Run It Straight, and there's really quite no other to put it: It's two dudes running into each other at full force. Basically modern day jousting but without armour nor weapons. Just straight body-on-body contact. (I don't want to link to any videos because I don't want this to be misconstrued as me promoting it). There's perhaps some sports basis to this: It's not entirely dissimilar from the kind of contact we see in full-contact rugby or American Football. But here, it's so much more violent and brutal, because every other semblance of sporting endeavour is stripped away. I certainly don't condone it. I think it's dangerous and actually kind of stupid. But I will also concede that there is something slightly hypnotic about it. Are we as humans perhaps drawn or attracted to violence? Do we find entertainment in people acting in "stupid" ways? Is it some animalistic instinct that we haven't fully shed? (You do see some such behaviour in nature documentaries, like when rams fight for supremacy and, well, ram into each other.) Anyway, I do hope this supposedly "viral" new sport actually does not catch on at all. The world has plenty of problems as it is. We really don't need full-grown adults just running into each other at full speed.
  2. TL;DR - A passerby punched and slapped a driver who presumably fell asleep behind the wheel. This is what happens when the Z monsters creep up on you while you’re on the road. Watch this 54-second video of a lady who knocked out in her car and got whacked awake by a passerby. So what happened? A female driver was found sleeping in her Honda Vezel at the roadside in Hougang. A male passerby then came over to her car and attempted to wake her up, but to no avail. He continued by punching and slapping her arm, before she woke up. Perhaps he was just afraid that she might have passed out, or passed away…? Online Chatter: The netizens were clearly not having it, saying that the man should not have used violence on her, especially so when she’s a female. Takeaway Regardless of how comfy your car seat may be, please don’t KO on the road! It is extremely dangerous to sleep in the car, especially with the A/C on. ========= Be the first to get the latest road/ COE news and get first dibs on exclusive promos and giveaways in our Telegram SGCM Community. 3. Seremban Boy Keeps Losing in Video Game So His Dad Broke His Competitor’s Spine On January 11, a misunderstanding over a video game ended with a teenage gamer being hospitalised with broken bones. The incident happened at around 10pm at an electronic game store in Palm Mall, Seremban. Sin Chew Daily reported that the teenage victim had been playing a competitive video game against another boy. After beating the boy several times, the boy’s father approached the victim and offered him RM2 to intentionally lose and let the boy win. However, the bribe didn’t work and the teenager soon seized another victory, beating the boy once more. The father was angered and became violent, throwing a chair at the victim. He kicked the teenager several times, rallying up around four other men to come and assist the assault. A video of the event posted on Twitter showed them surrounding the visibly terrified teenager, yelling at him as passersby watched helplessly. At one point in time, a man even kicked the teenager in the head as he cowered on the floor. The assault was brutal, and the boy ended up being hospitalised as he suffered severe injuries. With bruises across his body, punctured lungs, broken ribs, and a shattered spine, the victim is currently in the ICU of Tuanku Ja’afar Hospital. Source: Sin Chew Daily Four suspects have since been arrested, as reported by The Sun. All four suspects have been in remand until today (15 Jan), said Seremban district police chief Asst Comm Thiew Hock Poh. Their case is currently being investigated under Section 148 of the Penal Code for rioting. Source: Sin Chew Daily The police are currently searching for the whereabouts of a witness, S. Munisvaran, 37, to assist in the investigation. They have advised members of the public with information on the witness and the incident to call the investigating officer, Mohammad Najeeb Mohammed Shukri at 06-6033284. What a terrible tragedy! And over such a minor issue. Violence is never the answer and we wish the victim a complete recovery.
  4. Smoker who littered accuses NEA officers of violence A smoker caught littering outside a mall on Tuesday complained of violent treatment from officers of the National Environment Agency (NEA). Sales executive Zhong Wen Cai, in his late 20s, had left his cigarette butt on a stone seat after his smoke break outside Raffles City Shopping Centre when two NEA officers descended on him. They informed Zhong that he was littering and asked him for his identification card (IC). In response, he picked up the cigarette butt, threw it into a nearby rubbish bin and tried to explain that it was a misunderstanding.
  5. Police have arrested a 15-year-old male youth on 22 Nov 2010 for inciting violence online in the aftermath of the Downtown East murder which occurred on 31 Oct 2010.
