New era of self-driving cars will transform cities

Adding to its vast portfolio of transportation-related acronyms, the Ministry of Transport announced the launch of Carts - the Committee for Autonomous Road Transport for Singapore – on the 27th of August.   As the committee brings together expertise from different backgrounds surrounding mobility, several questions are poised to emerge: What could autonomous (or self-driving) vehicles do for Singapore? And, more generally, what is the status of the technology today?   Cars have been undergo

Injured cyclist's ghostly cries wakes up neighbourhood at 4 in the morning

On Saturday (June 19), at around 4:17 a.m., a cyclist had gotten into an accident at Yio Chu Kang Link. His high-pitched wails could be heard throughout the entire neighbourhood. According to the person who had recorded the incident, the cyclist was first seen wailing by the roadside and clutching his leg in pain. A few minutes later, the wailing stopped and the cyclist was seen scolding the driver of a white car. Thinking that the cyclist had lost his leg or broke a bon

Just how sturdy the new XC90 is (VIDEO)

Volvo is renowned for making cars which are some of the safest in the industry, and the marque isn't just going to rest on its laurels. As soon as it has shown us the all new XC90 - its best-selling seven-seater SUV, it released a crash test video that demonstrates just how strong (or how safe) the new car is.   The XC90's safety cage is reportedly constructed out of hot-formed boron steel - the strongest type of steel currently used in the industry. And the result is nothing short of impres

About 3 years after the launch of the Astra hatchback, Opel has finally revealed the Astra in its sedan form. BMW 523i driver comes out of his car and pees in public. Gets caught on CCTV

The recent weekend was probably eventful for most Singaporeans and Malaysians in Singapore as the Causeway reopened for the first time in 2 years due to the pandemic.  Many Singaporeans flocked to Johor Bahru to do the things they love most: shopping, eating and pumping cheap petrol. "Sia Suay" Unfortunately, Singaporeans have become notorious in Malaysia for the wrong things during the opening weekend. This includes jacking up their car to 'effectively pump more petrol' and

Another novel traffic light idea: The Sand Glass Traffic Light concept

You may have read Chee Jun's posting on the countdown timer that is used at some of the traffic light junctions in Malaysia. I have to say that it is indeed very useful in assisting motorists in deciding whether they should speed up, slow down or come to a stop at a junction. Of course, there are arguments on whether the system actually helps motorists in general as some say that it does not make any difference and some say that it makes things worse.   What ever the case, designer Thanva Tiv

Should the Govt encourage electric cars?

Before we start asking what the Government can do to encourage the use of electric vehicles (EVs), we should ask if it should.   The answer is not a clear "yes", because there are still issues to be tackled before we welcome the electric cavalry with open arms.   But it is leaning towards "yes" because of two main reasons.   Firstly, electric cars are more efficient than combustion-engine vehicles.   Generally, they are able to convert 90 percent of energy used into motion, compared to

Singapore drivers suck? Tiktoker gives her reasons on why she thinks so

In all honesty, I can see where she’s coming from. Just look at our articles.  What happened? Singaporean influencer and Tiktoker Nicole Chang Min put out a scorching hot take about our local drivers on a Tiktok that has since garnered over 94,000 views. The Tiktok opens with Nicole exclaiming that Singaporean drivers “sux” , saying that when she signals she is going to change lane, they often speed up to prevent her overtaking. This is not the way to do an Aventador convoy!

Last weekend saw the tragic accident of a BMW driver who was flung out of his E92 3 Series convertible along PIE. Condolences to the poor soul who did not survive the crash. Last weekend also saw the not-so-tragic accident of two Lamborghini Aventadors crashing into each other along Sembawang Road on 7 June. The photos of the 2 lamborghinis which crashed into each other went viral among local car clubs with SG Road Vigilante further furnishing us with the video shown here.

The 2011 Kia Optima was a head-turner at the recent New York Auto Show with its sleek lines and the corporate Kia nose, earning it the recognition as one of the best-looking cars at the show.   By the looks of it, the Optima sedan will be positioned as the sportier member of the Hyundai-Kia midsize family. Mazda to produce their own straight-six engine

Good news for fans of Mazda. The Japanese company has announced that it is working a new family of straight-six Skyactiv-X engines for its premium models.   Mazda made the announcement during an investor conference and said that the engines will come in both petrol and diesel variants. This comes as a surprise as this is Mazda's first foray into having a straight-six engine in its line up.   The new engines will make use of the brand’s Spark Controlled Compression Ignition

An accident between a Honda Civic, BMW 520i and a Toyota Corolla makes all three cars perfectly aligned with one another

This has to be one of the most unique, one-of-a-kind accident you would have ever seen before. The aftermath of the accident might even be meme-worthy. Watch it here: What Happened? The accident occurred at around 7am, at Hougang Avenue 1.  As the morning traffic started forming at a red light, a BMW 520i driver decided to perform an abrupt lane change from lane 1 (go straight/turn right lane) to lane 2 (go straight-only lane). Despite an oncoming Toyota C

Is this the new Volkswagen Jetta?

A couple of photos of the next generation Volkswagen Jetta have been leaked online, courtesy of the Spanish website, Autologia.   Looking pretty similar to the recently launched Arteon sedan, the new mid-size sedan from VW is scheduled to be launched globally in December.   Other than the photos shown here, no details about the car are known at this stage but it seems likely that the car will get similar powertrain options as the current mk7.5 Golf.

Caught drink driving: Here's the mess I got into

How it all began [December 2017] I had a couple of beers with some friends at a bar along Beach Road. Christmas was around the corner, the festive mood had set in and spirits were high. Now when I say "a couple of beers", I probably had like 5 standard glasses (if we're being specific). I left the bar around 11.30pm to head to another location to meet a different group of friends.   These are just some of the phrases I told my friends before getting into my ca

MCF meets Goodyear Tyres at Hangout

MCF held its fifth Hangout event at Spruce@Phoenix Hill over the past weekend. This time round, Singapore's favourite automotive forum teamed up with Goodyear Tyres for an insightful experience over breakfast.   The location was buzzing, with no fewer than 60 MCF members with their friends and family members turning up on an early Sunday morning for the event.       Of course, car 'gurus' wasted no time in getting themselves acquainted with the Goodyear products on display, as wel

Common mispronounced car names

As a "car guy"(or girl), nothing grinds your gears more than hearing a mispronounced car brand or model name. There may be some that even ‘we’ have been mispronouncing. Lets go through some of the more common mispronunciations we’ve been hearing.   Audi: It's aw-dee, not o-dee. Like the sound you make when it hurts: aw-dee.   Chevrolet: For a GM marque that's been around over a hundred years, you'd think there's no way people could still get Chevrolet wrong. Its shev-ro-ley.   Citroen: Cit

3 vehicles flipped over in 3 separate accidents within 3 days

Street racing like you have never seen before

No, we do not encourage any form of street racing at all but we have to say this daredevil really does know how to drive. Shot likely with a video camera mounted on his head, the driver skillfully weave through traffic at breakneck speeds of up to 180km/h in his Nissan 350Z. Totally reckless and unnecessary.   https://www.youtube.com/watch?t=35&v=Z3AfT9NE9Gk   Meanwhile here's another video of the same guy drifting on the streets. Again, this is something we do not want on our roads but

Only two Honda NSX sold in Australia so far

While Honda has recently announced plans to increase its NSX allocations to the United Kingdom as demand outstrip supply, the car isn't doing so well in Australia.   According to CarAdvice, the Japanese brand has only sold two NSXs in the country since the model was launched last year. Even though Honda says it is working on three other orders, the amount of units sold is still pretty little compared to the amount sold by its rivals. Audi has since sold 21 R8 V10 plus this year while Mercedes

Blur sotong driver fails to warn other of his stationary vehicle on the PIE, gets rear-ended not once, but twice

The accident above occurred on the Pan-Island Expressway (PIE). A white car with a damaged bonnet that was involved in an accident earlier stopped on lane 2 of the expressway. China's BMW X5 copy gets blown up by a German automotive publication

Seems like the German writers are very keen to give their fellow countrymen advice that they should seriously stay away from fakes. Especially fakes from China that are banned from being sold in their country.   Yes, the Shuanghuan CEO is officially banned from being sold in Germany because BMW won a court case against them in 2008; saying that the Chinese manufacturer copied its X5 SUV. However, the car is actually on sale in the other parts of Europe.   Fast forward to present day, one of

LTA can come into your home to check on your car!

If you think your loud-sounding car is safe from the authorities just because you stay in a private property, you might want to think twice now. A photo of a Ferrari 488 GTB being inspected inside someone's front yard has been circulating around in most car group chats over the last weekend.  From what we understand, it is almost unheard of for LTA enforcement officers to venture into a non-public area to inspect a car that might be flouting the laws. Your Class 3 driving license doesn’t mean you’re a better driver than a Class 3A

There goes a saying that “Real men drive with 3 pedals./Real men drive manual cars.”, and even though that’s not the case, most male (and female) drivers have certainly had that thought at the back of their mind when it comes to taking their license. According to the 2020 Annual Traffic Statistics, out of the 3 million citizens holding a Qualified Driving License (QDL), 1.7 million (56.9%) individuals have a Class 3 license while only 200 thousand (6.58%) individuals have a Class 3A li
