P and handbrake

Park (P) This selection mechanically locks the output shaft of transmission, restricting the vehicle from moving in any direction. A parking pawl prevents the transmission from rotating, and therefore the vehicle from moving. However, it should be noted that the vehicle's non-driven wheels are still free to rotate, and the driven wheels may still rotate individually (because of the differential). For this reason, it is recommended to use the hand brake(parking brake) because this actually locks (in most cases) the wheels and prevents them from moving.

Put handbrake better

Better to pull handbrake, sometimes the road seemed flat but actually have a little slope

Pulling handbrake will avoid car rolling backwards, can avoid chances of bumper hitting anything

My practice ...

a) use footbrake to stop car

b) move auto transmission to Neutral

c) pull handbrake

d) release foot brake

- vehicle will either be stationary or move slightly forward/backward

- the forces exerted on the handbrake gives a good indication of its condition

e) move transmission to Park

- less stress on the Park mechanism as the weight is supported by the handbrake

- cheaper to service the handbrake vs the transmission perhaps.

Also on steeper slopes, turn wheels outwards.

hehe.. the previous dudes didn't realise they are replying to a posts 10 years back!! COE already expired loh~!!

the beauty of consolidating!!

Anyway, I also engage neutral then handbrake first and make sure minimal car roll then engage P..

Not sure if this was discussed before, but since I'm doing it wrongly all this while, might as well share here with everyone.

Sorry the content is in Chinese, but in essence :

To prolong the life of the auto transmission, handbrake first, off engine, then gear to 'P', not just on slope.

For many cars, you cannot off the engine unless the gear is already at P.

Thanks for sharing bro.

I always do 'P' first, then handbrake. But luckily, mainly on flat ground. Else think my auto-trans gone case liao.

Will try the new sequence from now on.

Noted with thanks.

Yup, was wondering why everyone was discussing its wrong not to put handbrake, while the video is showing the correct sequence of parking.

I think you can cease the engine but cannot turn off the electrical stuff?

Yup, tried it earlier when coming home. Pulled handbrake and changed to N, then switched off engine. Key will remain stuck in the ON position until gear is moved into P.

Depends on the car also... mine old old, can shut off engine and remove key and leave even in R/D... but engine won't start unless in N/P, of course.

...I admit, I sometimes forget to put into P. Sometimes also forget handbrake but got put in P. <_<

Anyway my normal case is after position car in lot I move transmission into P while holding brakes, then pull handbrake, then shut off engine.

...Then I remember to take my foot off the brake. [sweatdrop]

Didn't feel any difference today morning, going back to my usual way of Park, then pull handbrake, then release foot brake and switch off.
