i know you all mean well but, I have been warned by americans before. let's hope you are hosting on a non-american server.

definition:

jap: Avoid (racial slur), except in direct quotes. A derogatory term for Japanese or Japanese Americans, used widely by white Americans to whip up hatred against Japanese and Japanese Americans before and during World War II.

http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=jap

1. Jap

1. Disrespectful and offensive name for the Japanese, especially Japanese-Americans. Synonomous with Chink, Gook, Nip, etc. (although not shunned by mainstream society as much as other racial slurs). Term made popular in America during WWII as the nickname for the enemy over in Japan and Japanese-American citizens who were forced into internment camps during the war. Hence, the negative connotations.

2. jap

1. derogatory slang for Japansese, esp. during WW II

then we should start a room called "nigger exports" for cars shipped out to african nations. I'm sure they are okay with us calling them nigger too. i know i know - "chinaman talk" or "chinky chong talk" or "cheena talk" for the newly made cars from china.

true true, howabout it since nigeria is an african nation, we can still call it "nig talk" as an abbreviation.

honestly i couldn't care less, but then again... just pointing out some ignorance.

I know you mean well, but why the sudden inclination to change the name?

Its all in the mind. Niggers is universally unacceptable as derogatory, so is

Chink. These words are always use as insults.

Nobody in "Jap" talk use Jap with any other meaning other than to describe it

as a Japanese product.

IMO, there is no need to change anything as it never had any derogatory connotations

in the first place.

the last I checked, we live in a democracy.. so like every other democracies... i believe that we should have a say in what goes on.. and we do so by voting..

on this issue, I vote that things are fine the way they are.. any one else has a vote on this?

mebbe the thread starter could edit this thread to include a poll..

Seriously using the term 'Japs' ain that serious. In our context, Jap is used like how the words 'Finns' or 'Swedes' are used, and also as short-form for Japanese. There is no malice in such usage at all.

ah screw it... forget it don't change don't change lor... who cares? typical SG NIMH (Not In My Home) behaviour... so stubborn won't change until authorities take action, or some issue becomes famous.

SGreans will keep their homes clean and throw killer litter out their windows all because it is not in their home.

Blogger being racist didn't care until SG goverment took notice by publicity spread.

Nanyang poly unknown blip on the map in the world till somebody decided to publish a stolen handphone.

Moderator / Administrator of a forum lazy to type a full word that makes the shorter abbreviation controversial.

forget it ok? drop the subject. I don't care, how does it affect me? nil zip zero.

I believe what the thread starter pointed out does have some logic also (if the word jap is explained in the dictionary the way he posted) [nod]

However, it all boils down to whether anybody has taken offence by that word. Probably not, unless some super anti-racism japanese ppl are reading the forum also [sweatdrop][sweatdrop] . Doubt so.

when everybody disagreed with the thread starter (it didn't help with somebody's typical "funny" remarks) [:|][:|] , naturally he won't feel good so cut him some slack. [bounce2]
