Highoak Neutral Newbie March 23, 2008 Share March 23, 2008 In my opinion, the previous W211 E240 is smoother/quieter than the current W211 E230...at least thats how I felt when I went for the test drive for the E230. The E280 I am sure will be better but then again it is in another price bracket. There is no end to it, each time you top up a little, I am sure you can find something better Just set a certain budget and a set of selection criteria and move on ↡ Advertisement
Viceroymenthol 6th Gear March 24, 2008 Share March 24, 2008 Bro... do you realise that E200k is the only 4 cylinder car in your line up? So in terms of engine smoothness really cannot compare to the rest. My advice, get a V6 powered E class to compare, and not the 4 cylinder supercharged E200. The Merc V6 is actually very smooth. I drive a 2.6 liter V6: CLK 240. It has sufficient low end torque but seems kind of missing at high revs. Anyway this is not a Civic or Integra so you won't be revving that high very often. They have stopped production of this engine so the current Merc V6 would be the 280 or 320, which is (I think) 3 point something liters? Correct me if I am wrong.. not really a fanboy who knows all the details. Is the 230 class also a V6?
Viceroymenthol 6th Gear March 24, 2008 Share March 24, 2008 Oh yah sorry, you were considering the current 520i as well. 4 cylinder 5 series? This is a first for BMW. Dunno why they even decided to put it out. Consider the power-to-weight ratio of the car with the E200 Kompressor and I think the E200K will come out tops. And dun flame me 520i owners, but I think he should get a "real" BMW with inline 6. But that's just my opinion. Once you drive a 6 pack, u will never look back. ;) By the way, is the Volvo Made in Malaysia??? Pls dun get offended if it is not true... have heard from somewhere.. Eyke Supercharged March 24, 2008 Share March 24, 2008 (edited) MB V6 are in models x230 and above. x230: 2.5L, 204hp x280, S300: 3.0L, 231hp x350: 3.5L, 272hp Very smooth, which is also due to the 7G-tronic transmission, ie. 7 speed auto gearbox. I feel MB interior more luxurious and switches/buttons/controls are more ergonomic. One feature i like a lot is part of the Adaptive Brake system: Hold function, which holds the brake at red lights etc so you don't have to apply pressure on the brake pedal at all. Ncss Clutched March 24, 2008 Share March 24, 2008 (edited) Merc has ended its old 240 engine liao. New 230 comes with a 2.5L V6 which also has 7-G. Power is 204hp... much more than its previous 240 V6 series. Current 280 also uses new engine which is a 3L V6 (different from previous 280). Jailbird005 1st Gear March 24, 2008 Share March 24, 2008 In Dec07 i was torn in between the S80T5 & the new C200. $138k vs $157k. In the end, chose the latter though its slightly smaller. Looking back, no regrets till date.
Albertcam Neutral Newbie March 24, 2008 Share March 24, 2008 Do you mean S60 T5? Cos I thought turbo version of S80 is costing much more than $138k.
Akula Turbocharged March 24, 2008 Share March 24, 2008 Think he meant the S80 2.5T, though can also be the S60T5. Besides this model SM carries the S80 3.2 and S80 T6 AWD.
Viceroymenthol 6th Gear March 24, 2008 Share March 24, 2008 Wow the new Merc 2.5L V6 is nice then. Any idea how to increase the power from my 2.6L V6? It is a W209. What about torque? Is the old 2.6L V6 same as the new 2.5L V6? Think for my driving style and where i live (central area), torque is more applicable. Is the new 2.5L V6 paired with 7G transmission comparable to the displacement and power output of the BMW 325i?
Viceroymenthol 6th Gear March 24, 2008 Share March 24, 2008 (edited) Yes! Very smooth indeed. Looks like the new generation MB engines can give BMW engines a good fight. My next car will be an MB as well, much to the dismay of my BMW-lovin wife. HAHA! MB V6 are in models x230 and above. x230: 2.5L, 204hp x280, S300: 3.0L, 231hp x350: 3.5L, 272hp Very smooth, which is also due to the 7G-tronic transmission, ie. 7 speed auto gearbox. Cmwmsoh Neutral Newbie March 24, 2008 Share March 24, 2008 wow... that's a great thread.. so far any regrets? My brother in law advised me one thing. Choose the car that you like best and then decide whether you can live the pros and the cons such as high price, no servicing package etc.. rather than compare so many cars cos it's there is always reasons for certain brands to offer special packages... well, my heart still with 523... will make a decision soon.. just afraid that if i buy a volvo or GS300, then i will be wondering how a 523 will drive like.. Only one advice ... go with your heart (if your budget allows). Althought I did like the BMW branding, I just wasn't as comfortable sitting inside the car, somehow didn't like the ergonomics and styling. Current 5-series is due for replacement in 1-2 years time, so the age is actually starting to show too.
Cmwmsoh Neutral Newbie March 24, 2008 Share March 24, 2008 By the way, is the Volvo Made in Malaysia??? Pls dun get offended if it is not true... have heard from somewhere.. Depending on model, some made in Thailand. Haven't heard of any made in Malaysia.
Cmwmsoh Neutral Newbie March 24, 2008 Share March 24, 2008 Eh ... since you're looking around this price range ... check out the Jaguar XF. The interior and overall styling quite solid, although I think in SG context, quite hard to shake off the "ah-pek" image. But otherwise, its a damm nice car. Overtook BMW 5 series as the executive salon car top-pick over at UK Autoexpress.
Viceroymenthol 6th Gear March 24, 2008 Share March 24, 2008 I thought Mercedes C180K, C200K and E200K is MADE IN MALAYSIA. Because they spell compressor with a K
Soya Supersonic March 24, 2008 Share March 24, 2008 Hi all I am new year and thus cannot start a new thread and was searching through and found this. Please forgive me for stealing the thread but in a dilema to choose a car to buy. 1. BMW 523 $171,000 2. BMW 520 $151,000 3. Merc E200 $168,000 4. Volvo S80 $145,000 I am currently driving iS200 and would love to try a continental car. What I am concerned is maintenance costs and reliability of course, drivability (how good the car performs). I am not good at techical specs, so any advice is great. I know the above is pretty vague, can anyone give me some advice? S80 without a doubt. why pay more $$ to be more common? Viceroymenthol 6th Gear March 24, 2008 Share March 24, 2008 agree! besides, S80 is bigger in size and seating capacity than all of the other above choices. JUST DUN LET OTHER PEOPLE CALL YOUR CAR A CHEAPO CONTI which they will, and BMW 5 and Merc E drivers will show u no respect on the rd. try not to feel inferior and try not to smoke them on the roads.... which your S80 is more than capable of doing. TRUTH! good luck dude
