Bonafidestack 4th Gear March 6, 2014 Share March 6, 2014 (edited) A few week ago, i went to a workshop and get my Air con compressor "serviced" Initially, i tot that air-con just need to pump the refrigerant and it will be sufficient to make the air con cold and cooling. But never did i know that air-con also need servicing. After i acquired some important knowledge from the mechanic and service advisor, i think it make sense and is important to regularly change your air con compressor oil. Singapore weather is too crazy already. And repairing a compressor is not cheap. So i wanna share with you guys how car air con works. Not a technical guy arh, just sharing what i know. Don't fault me if i say smth wrong. haha Basically, there are three main parts to the system -- the compressor, condenser, and evaporator. And there is 2 kind of pressure inside. One is the high pressure and the other is the low pressure. The high pressure have a compressor and in short compressor pump gases and force it out to the condenser. And for condenser the job is like a engine radiator, they radiate out the heat then some magic will appear to turn the some of the gases to liquid and will be inside the receiver dryer. the dryer is like thirsty hippo, suck all the water inside the reservoir. It will then move on to the low pressure part. For the low pressure, There is this Thermal Extension Valve to change high pressure to low pressure. It is the start of the air turning to cold aircon air. Next it will go to the Evaporator which this is the david cooperfield. This one is in the cabin, usually above the footwell on the passenger side. It also looks like a radiator, with its coil of tubes and fins, but its job is to absorb heat rather than dissipate it. Then the cycle will go on and on . . . The one that is working very hard is usually the compressor as it is like the motor of the aircon. And usually when we go and check our air con, we only remember to pump refrigerant into the condenser but forgot to top up/change the oil inside the compressor. This is a picture of how the compressor look like and with oil drain out. . . Okay back to my servicing, my workshop have an fully automated aircon flushing system that can flush, check and pump gases automatically. The only thing that is short of is top up oil, that have to be manually. But in the end, my mechanic told me that topping up oil must do it manually because it must done it in vacuum cannot expose to moisture as the oil viscosity will change. This is the only picture i took when they are servicing. They did a very well done job to my car. but due to my insufficient knowledge to car, my car actually suffered from shortage of oil and the compressor is grinding metal to metal, compressor is spoiled, and condenser is stuck with metal particles. Mine is still not that bad, but my mechanic say if prolong using it, it will give out a bad odour. And so my workshop help em to get a new compressor and help me to clean up my condenser. It is like a 3 day project. And 3 days, i have no car. It is really very terrible and inconvenient for me. But now everything is good! Like the new air con and will go back for air con servicing every year. And wanna to shout up to all the bros here to go service your aircon. Some of the workshop wanna chop us, so never change/top up oil for us. Then when air con compressor spoil, they can "chop" us more. Make you air con cool today! Dumb 4th Gear March 6, 2014 Share March 6, 2014 Touch wood. So far I got no air con problem since I bought the car in Aug 2006. Car serviced by AD and now my mileage coming 240k. I usually set at 27degree and 25 or less if got passengers.
Kb27 Supersonic March 7, 2014 Share March 7, 2014 Imo, aircon compressor should never be allowed to run dry, out of coolant or out of oil. If you do that, it should last a long, long time. When you feel the air is not cold, that's the time you should stop running the aircon and go fixed it asap.
