Elfenstar 3rd Gear December 19, 2006 Share December 19, 2006 Depending on the quality of fuel pumped (e.g. malaysian tanks seem to have more grit and my fuel filter used to get clogged earlier), size of filter, etc, the fuel filter should be changed between 10-20k kms or 20-40k kms. Your fuel pump is fine. It should last at least 10years... unless you use additives that may screw it up beforehand.
Fortress Clutched December 19, 2006 Share December 19, 2006 you will know when it has gone bad. Jerky drive and for the case of pump, running your car not less one-eight or quarter will help prevent over heating, which shortens the life.
Albeniz Turbocharged December 19, 2006 Share December 19, 2006 A few years back while I was driving my 1982 Nissan Sunny along the PIE, the engine suddenly turned off when I dropped from 5th gear to 4th gear. I had to glide slowly to the road shoulder and then restart the engine again. I think this is the worst case which could happen when the fuel filter is not changed on time. Fortress Clutched December 20, 2006 Share December 20, 2006 Glad to be of help. And sludges, which is most prevalent in fuel from the north, can cause fuel filter fouling. One of the many reasons, during my youth, that I do not pump my fuel(unless necessary) is because my experience from at least two kiosks(a drop of ink might not stain the ocean) that they do not clean their tank, whcch is a requirement, for about a decade or more, hence I cannot imagine buying sludges or water from them in my fuel.
