btw this "Sound-Clad" mentioned, together with other spray varieties, are also working on the foam principle to reduce sound transmission. their "bitumen-like" properties are usually not very much, except for some brands that really harden up.

forgot which shop i asked...but i remember i was told 2 layers for 4 dorrs will add the weight of 1 primary school kid to the car and that guy's defination of primary school kid's weight is 30+kg. he also said its around the same for most brands of SP material. i just took it with a pinch of salt, didn't really verified this info before. anyway it doesn't really matter to me la. i always see the workers carry many pieces at a time so can't be that heavy la.

Bro, to make things more complicated, There is a 'SOUNDWERKZ' And 'Soundwerks'. These two company again, are not related. I had mine soundproofing and ICE system done at SOUNDWERKZ. Very good workmanship. Not the cheapest around but they have the patience and take care for my car. [thumbsup]

which is why i brought up that point about bitumen being heavy and not really as effective as foam-types in soundproofing. nobody shooting me down yet ah?

 

interesting leh, dunch u think. almost EVERYONE runs to bitumen when they talk about "soundproofing car" but nobody seems to ask why.

Well, give them a call and speak to mr wong himself. He will explain the selection and usual of materials and some sp concept. I am not going to type out grandfather story so give them a call or just head down.

 

If you are set to let them install, just stay and see how mr wong installs. I bet you will be very amaze.

bitumen/ any of those bitumen based material.. they r solid type intended more to resist the sound entry.

 

neoprene (open cell) foam type more as sound absorbent

if u "more" "absorbent" the "sound", won't u end up reducing the amount of sound coming in?

 

if u "more" "resist" "the sound entry", won't u end up reducing the amount of sound coming in?

 

which is more applicable for most cars in general trying to have a quiet ride?

 

which is more effective per kg weight?

I read in a recent magazine at 7-eleven...there is a Vios that was fitted with the white fibre sound insulation by 3M. They claimed 20dBa sound reduction!!

 

The entire door panel(the plactic piece that has the handle and window buttons) was pasted full of the white fibre stuff. It looks like it can adsorbe alot of free-air noise.

 

The pictures also show the rear boot lid and the engine hood being pasted full of the white stuff.

 

I think I might want to try it if there are good feedbacks from anyone here.

3M has excellent R&D and resultant products although the prices are a tad higher than normal. I am also trying to improve the sound-proofing for my boot + wheel arches, not sure if the Thinsulate material is suitable for this purpose. Maybe we can do a bulk purchase to get better pricing?

most impt to u is the last statement. tt answer needs qualification by a SPL meter.

 

imo absorbent is more applicable when u talk abt internal sound, so u can control reverberations.

 

barrier however is more to cut down, cut off.

 

for most cars, we r talking abt budget cars, the flaw is obvious.. thin windows less then 4mm. sound reduction is only some 22dBA.

 

noise r generally audible ard 20 and above. but road noise is dependent.. can hit 100+ dBA easily. so the lousy thin window (under pertext of fuel saving) will let in some 80dBA noise, thru the window.

 

here the challenge is to prevent the same amt or more fr entering thru the doors.

 

the difference as i restate is.. as long as the noise level is similar or slightly better then the window. then tat's it. no more improvement can b achieved.

that means, for external sound, u're advising barrier = bitumen?

 

i don't think i can experiment on a door since i dun plan to open up my doors. but i could get a piece of bitumen, and a piece of foam, and try to measure how many dB bleeds through to the other side, without airtight seal.
