Airconvent Neutral Newbie May 5, 2007 Share May 5, 2007 Hi Just came across this thread and had no idea there is a club for Starlet users here. My first car was an EP plate 1980 Starlet DL (sqaure lamp). Then I bought a brand new Toyota Starlet XL in 1994 (dark green) for $74K! (The Swift was selling at $69K then but I loved the design of the starlet..i bought the 3rd Generation Variant II with electronic ignition). The earlier variant was not as cool looking and can be identified by the "4 CYL 12 Valves" on its side. New features in the new variant included electronic ignition, nicer front dials, better looking hand brake design and handle for hatch. I think you all agree the Starlet was WAY ahead of its time. Even today, although the 3G version was launched around 1992/3, 15 years later, its design still does not look dated because of its sexy curves! I drove that one for 7.5 years (absolutely no mod, not even sports rims!) before I upgraded to a sedan. Problem free for 7.5 years and when I rammed the engine all the way to the redline, still no smoke came out! Rated at 155km/h, I managed to push it to 160km/h on the NS highway once....slowed down because my mother in the car was complaining I was driving too fast (which was true), so kept the speed at 120-130km the rest of the way. Sad to have had to sell it off. BTW, this 3SG starlet also came in a 1.3L Turbo that can outrun a Porche from 0-100km/h. I understand there were 2-3 units imported into Singapore. I wonder if its still around? Also, after the 3G, there is also a 4G that was never imported. I ask Toyota-Japan many years back and they sent me its brochure. I still have it as well as the original Brochure for my starlet...heh heh. Nice car to do self maintenance also. Spark plugs, oil filter are easy to change yourself. I saved a bundle doing that. that was during the period when you can leave used oil at the petrol station as they recycle it. Nowadays they charge you to get rid of it! And yes, I agree, the Starlet is an over-engineered car. In fact we're still running around having our fun!! Do join us for a meet-up session once in a while! Most of us are driving Starlets but that doesnt mean that we group ourselves on Starlet lover's only. There are other of our kaki's driving other cars as well.
