As mentioned above, is it ok to use Semi-syn oil for 5K servicing?

It is OK to use full syn and semi syn for 5k servicing. Your engine is already run-in after 5k km. The only reason why it is not recommended is cost $$. This becos full syn and semi syn oil can last upto 10k km or more. So it is waste to throw it away after 5k km of usage (at 10k servicing). For me, I dun give a damn, I used the infamous Car*ube full syn oil at 5k servicing. Nowadays it is so cheap, less than $30 for 5L bottle.

Run In period of the engine is a time where engine parts with very tight tolerance gets worn. This loosens up the engine, helps improve economy, performance and engine life. Using synthetic oil, which gives better lubrication than mineral oil might just be too smooth to allow proper wear during the run in period, hence usually manaufacturers do not recommend synthetic oil during the first 1000km.

any oil also can la. syn, mineral whatever. it doesnt really matter. its nonsense about break in and all that. have seen a BMW video where they redline the engine a few times to test the car before it leaves the factory.

Usually for new car, first two servicing will be semi syn oil. Meaning 1k and 5k. At 10k, use fully syn oil for for ride.

First 2 servcing actually is to clear the wear and tear residue due to new part of the engine. When the parts are seasoned, then fully syn oil is used.

I cant speak for the china made cars (now that they're out) but most engines are not new. It would have been run continuously for at least 24hrs at high rpms at the factory before it gets dumped in the car.

There is little/no wear and tear residue and all this serves is to help the parts bed in better, but only if all the parts get as hot as they can get. If there is any bedding in, it will definately be completed properly within 1000kms.

The first 15-20mins when the engine first starts is the critical section which makes or breaks the engine. Every "new" engine unfortunately would have been run for a much longer period before the owner even gets the car [laugh] The oil should have been changed long before that event as well.

ok, call me cheapskate.

out of curiosity, i used ca*lube on one of my car servicing, the 5w40 fully sync one.

darn. fuel consumption shot up, from usual 11-12l/100km, now consistently 13-15l/100km. shocked.gif

my driving pattern and route is pretty similar, 50% city.

got this as an average figure over 5 fuel top-ups, so its not just a one-time.

of course, my personal experience.. will change back to my usual oil on the first available opportunity.... a lesson learnt for being cheapofurious.gif
