Unltd 5th Gear March 27, 2007 Share March 27, 2007 I have noticed an increasing trend of cars having opaque side window curtains, I feel that it is very diffcult to check blindspot (or vitually impossible) if they are drawn. I understand it helps block out the sun and stuff, but does the pros of having the curtains mean that safety is too far compromised? Of course tour buses have those side curtains, no argument there. But they have special mirrors to check blindspots and generally these driver have different classes of licence (correct me if I am wrong). Personally I feel it is dangerous, what are you comments and is it legal? ↡ Advertisement
Alant 1st Gear March 27, 2007 Share March 27, 2007 Worse than tinted windows.
Bigtoothpick 3rd Gear March 27, 2007 Share March 27, 2007 Actually, they're not always opaque. Mine are made of black mesh, from outside basically cannot see in, but i can see out OK. Even at night so long as there is sufficient lighting (not that i deliberately use them, just that sometimes i forget to draw them open). i use the curtains primarily to cut out direct sunlight. Unltd 5th Gear March 27, 2007 Author Share March 27, 2007 Well, actually thanks for your comments. I was hoping some with these curtains would come in to comment, I have seen that there are some who use translucent curtains (which allows some light to pass through) and I think they are still alright. But I seem to be seeing an increase in the number of people who use opaque curtains, I think these people either do not know that it is not safe (cannot check blind spot) or are simple selfish (do not care for the safety of others). Also I think they are spoiling the market for people who use translucent curtains, can imagine in future TP/ROV will step in and it is no go for those using any curtains. It is not unlike the fog light thingy, whereby most people with fog lights shine down and is perfectly fine. Then there must come a small group of people who decide that it should shine up and install it such... Then comes the clampdown...
Bigtoothpick 3rd Gear March 27, 2007 Share March 27, 2007 well, look at it this way - for the longest time goods vans were not allowed side glass windows (a.k.a. blind vans). So i guess it is still manageable for the driver to drive with such "obstruction"...
Windwaver Turbocharged March 27, 2007 Share March 27, 2007 Driving with curtains drawn is really dangerous but I think it's ok if the car is parked there.
Gabriel 1st Gear March 27, 2007 Share March 27, 2007 yupz...agree with u on dis... blind spots can easily be checked using blind spot mirrors... coz me driving panel van too..with no windows in the cargo area...and there are no issues with blind spots as yet
Unltd 5th Gear March 27, 2007 Author Share March 27, 2007 I agree that it is ok if the curtains are drawn whilst the car is parked, sorry that I was not as clear as I should. What I meant was that I see more cars on the roads with drawn curtains whilst on the move. Personally, I have hung shirts in my car on the handles above rear passenger doors. If it is on the driver's side because there is a gap between the shirt and the rear right window, I am still able to see the blind spot clearly (But drawn curtains offer little or no gap). However, on the handle above left rear passenger window which I have ever hung my shirt once. I cannot see blind spot (blocked by shirt), thus I cannot comprehend how those with drawn opaque curtains are able to check blind spots. That also made me drop the idea of ever hanging curtains in my car as I feel its too dangerous....
Unltd 5th Gear March 27, 2007 Author Share March 27, 2007 Correct me if I am wrong, but the design of mirrors on goods vehicles seem alot bigger and offer better view of angles. And the blind spot for goods vehicles are not in the position beside where the cargo area is, the blind spot for goods vehicles are actually where the front windows are. Sorry but I am not sure, need to confirm with you.
Gabriel 1st Gear March 27, 2007 Share March 27, 2007 mine is a small van...kangoo to be precise... my mirrors are the same as a normal saloon car.. left blind spot is on the lane next to mine...dat is if there is one lane there... right blind spot is like 2-3 lanes next to mine.. so if no blind spot mirror for my left..me wont be able to see if there is a car slightly beside me ... and my right..not so impt..but useful in case some joker decides to cut a few lanes from the rite to my lane... and no worries..me understand.. but me not sure bout the bigger vans or lorries...though me noe lorries got more mirrors then us... Unltd 5th Gear March 28, 2007 Author Share March 28, 2007 Yeah I totally agree, these people without checking blind spot drive into your lane. The worse thing is some of them after you honk to warn them, they heck care or give you the disgusted look. Some even give violent hand gestures!
