DC1977 3rd Gear April 3, 2017 Share April 3, 2017 Wah bro, you sound very convinced that honda cvt is the best wor.. No la.. there are still room for improvement la. City cvt also will jerk slightly.. just not as much as other cvts. But i do agree that at least its better than some of the mentioned brands here in this thread. well cos I tried 2 cars from honda wif cvt and they prove to drive well... much better than the others which I tried also... of cos have room for improvement la...surely..but their 2 gen cvt sure works well... ↡ Advertisement

You maybe right about the driving part but is it reliable? Airwave owners might have something to say about that.

Kklee 6th Gear April 3, 2017 Share April 3, 2017 It's pathetic how ppl try to convince others by not giving any example. And why is that for the past 10 years only cvt get to advance and improve, you mean other gearbox just sit on the old tech for 10 years? What rubbish. Sometimes innovations comes with a price - just ask the owners of those VW and Chevrolet Cruze with transmission issues.
Jamesc Hypersonic April 4, 2017 Share April 4, 2017 Some men have big gear sticks some men have smaller gear sticks. To me the most important is that it works. What's the point in having the biggest, most powerful transmission if it doesn't work and you cannot crank it up?
Jusnel 6th Gear April 4, 2017 Share April 4, 2017 You maybe right about the driving part but is it reliable? Airwave owners might have something to say about that. i was driving the 2007 City with CVT for 10 years, until scrapped. NEVER GIVE ME a single problem, while i was laughing at Audi and VW cars sitting at workshops. You saying its not reliable? U can say i'm lucky or whatever. at least i can say from my own experience. Columbian78 6th Gear April 4, 2017 Share April 4, 2017 if it is about the drive feeling, I think the engine driving the gears can be a significant factor. 2 years ago, i was comparing a sylphy 1.6t (cvt) and mazda six 2.5na (6at?). Engine output numbers are similar between these 2 cars. The mazda 6 is a good car and I really like it back then. I remember the mazda acceleration felt more cvt-like than the sylphy though. The sylphy felt more "exciting" in the sense there is a special push when you put the foot down a little. I think it is the turbo giving early high torque. I am not saying the mazda 6 is cvt like, just a direct comparison on the feeling between these 2 cars holistically.
Jusnel 6th Gear April 4, 2017 Share April 4, 2017 Not sure coz I dont know anyone who drive honda city.City and airwave shared same engine and chassis. So they r identical. The only difference is airwave was sold by PIs. City is by KM. I can't remember whether KM sold Airwave or not. I doubt it. Well, if I wan to be bias, I can say PI cars are not reliable? Jamesc Hypersonic April 4, 2017 Share April 4, 2017 Can it be that CVT there are many types and different manufacturers have different types and hence different reliability? Like DSG from one manufacturer the 6 speed wet and the 7 speed dry are two totally different units. The dry to save money for lubrication has a totally different reputation. So I guess if my box didn't break down doesn't mean all the other type of boxes from my car maker is equally reliable.

Just like suspension. Not all suspension are made the same. Some car brands have softer suspension than others. So to make a fair statement on CVT, one must be exposed to few car brands.

Jameschia26 1st Gear April 4, 2017 Share April 4, 2017 Just to share some thought Driving a old FD1 (9 yr plus) and went to a few showrooms to test drive Tried both Honda and Toyota on CVT on a non-peak period where you can have a stretch of road to floor the accelerator for a short while. I was thinking that after 10 yrs from my old car, technology should be improved such that I should feel a better performance from these vehicles but sadly, I left both showrooms contemplating whether I should just extend my COE as neither the city/civic(1.6)/altis gave me a better drive than my old car. I'm sure the 1.5T is a different animal but the price is 130K! And I don't really like the new Civic's super low headroom at the rear, with a center hump for passengers. Also tried the K3 SX model (with 6AT) and in fact, that gave me a slightly better drive but then the engine sound even louder than my 9 yr old car when i stepped hard on the gas...... So far, have not decided whether I should simply extend my COE as to do so, I would need at least 4-5K to do up my old ride nicely (including re-upholstering all my seats), as well as forgo my PARF of 11K at the end of current COE.. IMHO, you should extend your COE since you have no car in mind and it is unlikely you will get something you like with your budget. Jameschia26 1st Gear April 4, 2017 Share April 4, 2017 Yap am seriously considering haha Am trying to get a depreciation less than 10K/year Either a. extend COE b. Currently one of the VW agent trying to sell me a Management car which is a jetta sportline that is about 9 mths old for 103K, very tempting.. but a little wary of the reliability c. Just learn to drive more patiently and buy the altis ↡ Advertisement
