Yes, thats what I meant. I bought a Mio brand at Aud$399 and the map covers the whole of Australia. I find it useful as it warn you on red light and speed camera too. [thumbsup]

You can also find many information enbeded onto the map, e.g eating place, accomodation, place of interest and many more.

June is winter time over there.....duno think anybody will go to the beach.

Can drop to as low as 0-5 deg. So better prepare some warm clothings. But there wont be snow.

I've used Perth as a base for several driving holidays in Aust before, and have tried Budget and M2000.

M2000 - no complaints

Budget - One word - Terrible. Although I had reserved a car in advance there was none waiting for me when I arrived. [thumbsdown] finally they found one for me, supposed to be for "another customer", but it was quite dirty, like it had just been dropped off. [:|] When I returned to Singapore and checked my credit card statements, I found that they had overcharged me compared to my reservation rate. Chased them for several months via email for a refund, when they stopped replying to me, I lodged a complaint with the Aust dept of consumer protection (Very efficient [thumbsup] ), immediately they processed a refund and claimed it had been lost in the computer. Bayswater = the no birds advertisement.

To rent a really really cheap car, you need to book in advance. Otherwise it wont be cheap. I remembered I paid something like A$23/day for corolla last time. Ask for no air. Coz it means, no aircon.

But aiyah june so cold. No need aircon one. Heater all car got one. No problem.

I think for super cheap rentals, you need to drive those 3yo cars. Not 1yo cars. Anyway no problem one. A few times, I got booking, but reach there, no car. So got free upgrade to another car with air or another younger car.

Also, call different branches, will get different prices. [sly] If you pick up from airport / drop off at airport, maybe they will rent at normal prices. [lipsrsealed]

But I used to pick up in City and arrange for drop off at airport. Of you basically compare if its worth to drop off in City + take bus / taxi to airport (A$20?? can't remember)

(edited)

I doubt it'll drop to very low temperatures in Perth during the day. At night maybe, but nobody goes to the beach at night. I was there during the Easter holidays; it's warm as they had extended Summer throughout OZ this year; some of the lakes were dried up from the drought. It's warmer than before. Alternatively, you may want to drive a little up north to Hilary's Harbor in Sorrento (about 5-10 mins drive from Scaborough Beach). Somewhere near Joondalop/Wanneroo. There's a huge flea market and nice place for lunch by the beachside; the car park also huge.

Supercharged

City car Rentals (citycar.com.au) is good. Reserved a Corolla and was given a free upgrade to a 4-litre Ford (can put in low gear and drive on 4WD roads). Located in city itself. Avoid Budget.

My recommendation:

Day 1

Sprint all the way down to Albany. Start 8am, confirm can reach by 2-3pm. Along the way, visit the Natural Bridge, The Gap, Stony Hill. At Albany visit the old whaling station and Mt Clarence (best at sunset).

Day 2

Visit Pemberton to take the steam train ride to the Cascades. Visit the Valley of the Giants. Visit Blackwood River and if you can find a campsite, see how the Aussies vacation camping out in their trailers with children swimming or canoeing in the river. thumbsup.gif

Day 3

Visit Cape Leuwen for the Lighthouse that can see 2 oceans. Then snake up north to visit the Giant Cave with it's fossils intact then go climb the Diamond Tree (free no need to pay, the other one is taller but need to pay).

Day 4

Go back to Perth but on the way stop at Mandurah to have lunch and marvel at the houses.

Day 5

Stay in Perth and visit Cottesloe Beach. Very high class beach. Visit the houses there too. Very high priced.

Day 6

Spend a whole day in Fremantle and visit the Fremantle market.

Sounds like a good itenary, but just have to point out that the Freo markets open from Friday to Sunday only.

If you are going to do all the suggested above, better get unlimited kms for your rental car [:)]

Also try to squeeze in a visit to Swan Valley wineries and the Chocolate Factory if you can...we stay about 7 mins from there and can tell you it's worth a visit! [thumbsup]
