Cool Down Baby... TOO HOT !!!

Driving around a S15 is one thing, but managing the heat produced by it during events has become a sheer torture (and not to mentioned embarrassment) to me as I have to bow out of a drift whenever the car reaches its max temperature.

 

So I decided to invest in a set of additional cooling modifications that caused my water temperature to drop from 85 deg C to a current 76 deg C. My oil temperature is now running at 80 deg C compared to 90 deg C as before.

Installed a 40mm Koyo Radiator to replace my 12mm thick stock one, along with Samco hoses

Installed a TRUST / Greddy Breather Tank (removal of bubbles generated during high temperatures in the water line)

Installed a HKS Oil Cooler (installed just behind the intercooler, before the air-con condenser)

You could also try swapping out the stock radiator fan of your Silvia for a SPAL or a Flex-a-Lite high speed model, add a aftermarket fan controller that turns on the fan at a lower temperature.

 

Very few people realise that heat management in a TC car is very crucial.

Very true. I'll monitor the temp for now and install the fan at a later date. I noted that Billion seems to have a very nice big fan that I'd like to install and it switch on at either low RPMs or when the temp hits a certain range.

Koyo Radiator : $900 (with install and coolant)

Trust Breather Tank : $340 (with install and adapters)

Samco Hoses : $180 (got them from a friend who came back from overseas)

HKS Oil Cooler : $800 (also from same friend who was travelling, install was $100, OUCH)

 

Total : $2,320

 

At the same time, I changed my front brake pads and replaced some of the wheel hub bolts that were worn out.

Errrmmmm... but oil temp at 90 deg is not high to begin with leh....

 

My usual driving around already has the oil temp at ~ 100 deg.... which can go as high as ~ 130 deg when I went up Genting.

Nope... not deep pockets... it's called plan and save for this for almost a year already...

 

I think the workshop fed up with me already, keep on asking them to quote and requote every other month, just to make sure that I was on target to save for the stuff I wanted.

 

It's just like planning for an annual holiday, must plan and save up in a discipline manner in order to make it achievable.

 

So instead of planning for holidays, I plan for upgrades to the car.

 

Anyway, parts like the radiator and the hoses were already due for changing. My stock radiator was getting clogged up already and the hoses were feeling like tou-fu, soft soft already. So about time to change.

 

Workshop in the end gave me a decent discount in order to stop me from asking for requotes again

That's why the oil cooler that I bought comes with a thermostat. Currently, I'm monitoring the temperature. If it feels like its too low, then I'll tighten it to a higher temp setting.

 

I need it when I drift cos it produces so much heat that water and oil temp just soar.

the breather tank should be placed at a point higher than the highest hose or where ever the coolant flows. that way the air can escape easier.
