This thread is not to be a flame for any party but just trying to understand.

I went to C&C over the weekend (but of course I cant afford.. was there because my friend want to buy the merc; trying to wha2 ji3 deng3, free coffee.. [:p] ). I read from the brochure that the 1.8L C-class has about 180 horse-power and yet the fuel consumption is about 8.5L / 100km (that's 11.76km/L)..

Is Merc engine really that powerful and yet not thirsty?

I thought continental cars are thirsty machines.

If the brochures shows the 'combined' fuel economy figure, it's not very representative of Singapore driving. You should subtract around 20% from that figure for a better indication.

For example VW Golf GTI's combined fuel economy is 7.9L/100km (12.65km/L). But owners realistically get around 10km/L.

The car is 1.8L with a supercharger. If you drive normally and on a highway, i think the consumption would be like a toyota. but if you chiong all the time and use the 180hp to the fullest, then the consumption also chioong. i was there on sunday and think the new c-class is really pretty nice.

True, it's a supercharged M271 1.8L producing 184bhp and 250Nm.

Even on the much heavier E, I can get 10L/100km with normal driving on average (combined city and highway). For C, the FC will be better.

Thats based on the combined cycle of city and suburban driving. My car... it makes about 9km per litre and its 3,000cc with 2 snails [sly]

Bottomline is --> never trust any manufacturer's claim be it Ferrari, BMW, Mercedes and etc.

More power = more fuel consumption period

Not really. Mine is 2L, doing 10+ to 12km/L

And, I dun belief in the brochure. U should look at Combined Cycle.

I am doing 10+ to 12+ km/l for my W203 C-class.

This twinpulse is one of the nice engines from MB that is both adequate in power and road tax friendly. The low end torque is good to push the car too.

Correction.. I don't drive MB, but another conti brand.

But heck, the discussion here is not about MB only but Conti in general.

Under stringent emission criteria and a lot of ppl over Europe are extremely Pro-Green (especially Germany, who is rated as the greenest in the world per human capita), the perception has to change already about fuel consumption on contis.

I for once is a happy camper. Previous car, 1.6L 8.9KM/L. Now, 2.0L at 175bhp, at avg 11km/L

Hehe.. doesn't make sense right?

This post title is about the C-class and it happen to be a conti.

Anyway, I am glad you are another happy conti fan. It's very difficult to get people to be one...one example is the thread starter already had the impression that contis are fuel guzzler.

Turbocharged

Reasons, why continental cars are fuel guzzlers, are listed below:

1) Cars here are extremely expensive

2) Continental cars tend to be more expensive than Japanese cars

3) People therefore tend to buy the entry level models

4) Engines are tiny for entry level models

5) Chassis is heavy

6) More fuel needed to haul a$$

Hence they generate the impression of being fuel guzzling. The same can't be said for those with bigger engines.

Side track a bit. You have 2 snails [shocked] . May I ask what car you driving? 335i? GTR, RX7? or 911 turbo [jawdrop]. Eiher cars is fanastic.

Oh, I don't think Ferrari buyers will be too partculur about FC, so I doubt Ferrari will put "best" figure to customers, not that customer will bother anyway.

Well, if can afford a prancing horse, surely cost of fuel is secondary. [laugh]

A friend driving a renault always say this, "Cost of car in singapore so high already. What is that few hundred bucks of petrol..." [idea]

A friend not driving always ask, "ur car dun drink meh? Petrol not exp?"

Point is, once we drive in singapore, how much more can petrol be, until 1litre go 4km or something. [:p]
