atlantis Neutral Newbie October 4, 2007 Share October 4, 2007 My only grouse with this so far is it does not allow keying in coordinates for destination. And I thought it was a basic feature in GPS. ↡ Advertisement

atlantis Neutral Newbie October 7, 2007 Share October 7, 2007 Feedback after using the device for a week. Feedback is from a first time GPS user perspective and my requirements (as opposed to comparing to other brands and model). This feedback also goes to Eastgear in the hope firmware upgrades to address the cons. Pros: 1- Value for money @ $499, notably inclusion of all key maps for M'sia and S'pore (malsing, SLA, mapking), and text to speech (TTS) 2- Pretty easy to use (given the available functions) Cons: 1- Not able to use coordinates for destination (this is my biggest grouse) 2- Not able to switch off completely when plugged into car charger; every car ignition starts GPS and the startup 'announcement' [also not able to disable the announcement, after all how many times must I hear the same thing] 3- Not able to see coordinates of destination (after search), so can't share coordinates with others 4- Not able to see visually on the destination/navigation screen which map is currently used: malsing, SLA, or mapking 5- In car charger connects to mini-usb port instead of GPS holder (despite the contacts available on holder and on GPS). So, removing GPS from the car requires extra step for disconnecting charger from GPS unit) Less important but useful to point out that the documentation is a bit thin in explaining certain things - for example, one has to clear the track log to avoid 'hang situation' (that even a reset/restart) won't help. Cklasse 1st Gear October 7, 2007 Share October 7, 2007 After so many posting...it is very clear Garmin is the leader and Garmin is the one that knows what a user wants. It has never been any easier to use a Garmin, others are simply trying and have not reach there yet.
atlantis Neutral Newbie October 7, 2007 Share October 7, 2007 I hope you did not make that universal endorsement from my posting. It is afterall a price performance issue to many who cares for the utility value each dollar brings. Holux 53Clife serves my purpose well and if it knocks off the first few cons in my list, it is then perfect for my purpose (but perfection is not needed in reality). Rskeisuke Clutched October 7, 2007 Share October 7, 2007 hi there, i'm a holux user too.. i believe you can see the coordinates by selecting the satellite icon when you are at the location. i can't figure out the clearing of track log as i haven't encounter it on my set. care to elaborate? atlantis Neutral Newbie October 7, 2007 Share October 7, 2007 (edited) Agree, but I need the coordinates for any POIs before I reach them. On the 'hang' situation: Sometimes, when I switched on the GPS inside a building (where the GPS cannot get a fix), the 'timer' icon (similar to Windows OS's timer icon) will appear (as if it is waiting for something). This seems to last forever, even after I leave the building and it remains in the same state even after powering off (and on again) with the front button or the switch behind. The solution: press the "Cancel Routing" button (next to the "View GPS Status" button). p.s. I was told this happens when the system thinks it has not reached a destination when it was last powered off. However, in my last incident, I had actually reached my destination before powering off. Rskeisuke Clutched October 7, 2007 Share October 7, 2007 i haven't encounter the hanging issue you've got. this may be due to the fact that i only turn on the unit only after i leave my MSCP, usually getting a fix within 30 secs. Strange though, iirc, my unit doesn't turn on after i start the engine even with the car charger adapter plugged in. It only turned on after i depress the front on/off button. atlantis Neutral Newbie October 7, 2007 Share October 7, 2007 Let me ask EastGear on the on/off issue. It makes sense to work that way. thanks!
atlantis Neutral Newbie October 10, 2007 Share October 10, 2007 Clarification: The symptom I described (GPS starts during ignition) is only applicable when the switch behind the GPS unit is turned to OFF. Which means it must be left in a constant battery mode/charging mode.
Rskeisuke Clutched October 11, 2007 Share October 11, 2007 actually, i'm still a little confuse about the system switch at the rear. i never switch it off. i believe it's the switch to the OS core. iirc, the manual states only to switch it off if one encounters severe problem with the set (i.e. cannot lock on to birds or lock-ups)
Chickenfarm Turbocharged October 11, 2007 Share October 11, 2007 My only grouse with this so far is it does not allow keying in coordinates for destination. And I thought it was a basic feature in GPS. I believe they will have this added feature when a later model comes up for sale. Anyhow, every GPS set will have their own inherent problems lah. The searches for Garmin also takes sometime to get use to, eg. if u key in JLN...chances are u get no matching results but if u key in Jn, then all the Jalan Jalan will come out. Can take quite awhile to search sometimes since I kept it in my car (hidden away) most of the time and won't be meddling with it till I'm in it. Btw...can your set search via postal code?
