Hermit 1st Gear September 17, 2007 Share September 17, 2007 i drive both manual and auto yes, i do. for auto tranny- i used it mainly during decending a hill/ mountain. eg. Genting/ Cameron But there are some who may comment using engine brake is putting unnecessary stress on the engine, thus engaging Neutral when approaching a stop. Their reason: 1)save petrol 2)replacing brake pads are much cheaper than replacing engine. My reason: 1)reduce stress on the braking system, once broken- it'll just give up on you when you need it most. and all will be too late then. 2)reduce heat generated on the brake pads juz my 2-bytes of info

Herk Neutral Newbie September 17, 2007 Share September 17, 2007 True, part of wear and tear. Auto car is automatic engine braking, for manual, gotta do it thyself. Follow wat the school teaches. Its correct driving techniques that might save lives when seconds count.

Yeobh 4th Gear September 17, 2007 Share September 17, 2007 (edited) Engine and exhaust brake are widely used by drivers of heavy transport goods vehicles travelling in mountainous roads. If they use thier air brakes, the brake shoes will wear off too fast. Edited September 17, 2007 by Yeobh
Genie47 1st Gear September 17, 2007 Share September 17, 2007 Actually the main skill to learn is throttle control. Fine throttle control. An EFI engine can go down to 1.3kRPM w/o stalling. For practice, try going through North Buona Vista (The Gap) on 4th gear w/o touching your brakes.

Crazybugger 1st Gear September 17, 2007 Share September 17, 2007 We should always maintain our car in gear when slowing down or taking corners. Reason is because when the car is in gear, it is under more positive control and also power is available at an instant should there arise any emergency, eg need to swerve to avoid something/somebody etc. ALSO, car in gear corners much more stable and therefore FASTER!! The trick is rev matching so that the shifts are not jerky thus destabilizing the car and making your passengers puke This is where heel and toe technique becomes useful. Geogeo Neutral Newbie September 17, 2007 Share September 17, 2007 I was told before that transmission stressed more then engine when gearing down. Any expert advise here?

Icekitten Clutched September 17, 2007 Share September 17, 2007 Yes I do. Engine brake before entering corners and also while stopping. Only when lazy then I will free gear and brake all the way to stop. My hubby doesn't though. He brakes all the way before entering the corner then downshifts for power to exit. He says it's cheaper to change brake pads than clutch. And he also believes in the theory of wearing out of gears.
Adwin Neutral Newbie September 17, 2007 Share September 17, 2007 I do.... It is definitely a faster and more safer way to slow down or stop. At least you know you are in control when you need it. ↡ Advertisement
