Why use long winded method when there is a simple elegant method? Its like reaching from the back of your head with the right arm just to touch the left ear when you can reach from the front (which is so much easier) leh

im puzzle too. I believe they are giving these kids lower secondary maths questions to solve but without the use of algerbra. Its to induce creative thinking wor.....thats what MOE claim.

 

If one's kid develop thier creatively later.......then hon-gan liao.

Quite simple to solve right?

 

1st one:

 

(156 - x)/(72 - x) = 4

 

x = 44kg

 

2nd one:

 

6x/14 = x/2 - 112

 

x =1568 chairs

 

3rd one:

 

total volume = 0.12 cubic metres

 

so 0.5(0.4x) + 0.7(0.4x) = 0.12

 

x = 25cm

 

u teach tution ar?? still remember so fast.. i look see look see for 20 mins then remember how to start.. almost all return to teacher liao..

For Q1: 156-X = 4(72-X)

 

For Q3: 60*40*50=X*40*(50+70)

 

For Q2: A little tough though. Need some time to think

 

I don't think they are allowed to use variable. That's the tough part.

 

If cannot use variables how to compute?

they are not allow to use algerbra to solve these problems....so your x,y,z solutions will be rejected. I think they draw boxes and stretches to solve it.

 

how can it be not allowed? not only should it be allowed, the students who use more advanced methods should be praised too.

Qn1.

 

(156 -x)

------- = ratio of 4/1

(72 - x)

156 - x = 288 - 4x

x = 44 (ans)

 

Qn2.

 

6 boxes = Rows of 13 chairs

7 boxes = Rows of 7 chairs

7 - 6 boxes = 112

1 boxes = 112

14 boxes = 112 X 14 = 1568 chairs (ans)

 

Qn3.

 

(50 X 40 X h) + (70 X 40 X h) = 120,000

2000h + 2800h = 120,000

4800h = 120,000

h = 25 (ans)

I used to think it is not allowed. but realise they have new syllabus compared to our time whereby they are taught simple algebra. You can check their text if one is still not sure.

Hi,

 

Is it? I asked my wife the same question, she is a pri sch teacher also teaches math, whether pri student can solve it with algebra, she said they wont penalise them because using algebra is acceptable so long as the child knows how to use it.

 

So i told my wife i will teach my son to use algebra rather then model to solve these type of questions

ask ur wife to write complain letter to moe, the issue is not to set such tough papers until the average and below average students suffer. I kw their intention is to "identify" the top whiz at the expense of the average kids
