3,400 cars caught speeding on KPE in 6 days

NEARLY 3,400 vehicles were caught exceeding the 70kmh speed limit in the underground Kallang-Paya Lebar Expressway (KPE) in the first six days of its opening.

Of the lot, 45 cases exceeded 110kmh, and one vehicle - a sedan - was clocked crossing 140kmh.

Their owners will be receiving either warning letters or summonses from the Traffic Police.

The number of speedsters caught works out to a daily average of 563 - double the number of speeding cases islandwide per day.

This is partly because the tunnels have highly accurate digital laser cameras - the first of their kind used here. They never run out of film like the old models used on other expressways. And they work 24 hours a day, seven days a week, unlike policemen carrying laser cameras.

The other reason for the inordinately large number of cases is that some motorists are still unaware of the new tunnels' 70kmh limit.

just went thru KPE today for the 1st time...

actually, it is not motorists are unaware of the speed limit (hell, there are SO MANY signs/electronic_banners saying 70km/h limit), it is motorists are unaware of where the cameras are... [nod]

the smaller reason is motorists have a hard time putting "expressway" and "70km/h limit" together.

Many still think that exceeding by 10% is OK ma!

Yeah. They can afford the speeding fine & demerit points, somemore no need to attend court, exceeding 10% speed limit mah, quite OK mah. [sly]

its a realistic speed, considering 70km/hr is not a reachable limit during peak periods in SG eways. LTA don't want to keep on changing signs you know. [laugh][laugh][laugh][laugh]

Fully agreed. Why only 70kmh? Think the authorities must do some explanation liao.....

Other expressways are doing 90, what's so special about KPE?? confused.gif

"Expressway" having a limit of 70. A joke indeed.
