kia, proton, hyundai, any other brand better than china cars.

those who go china b4 will know china car is hardcore type. Take a look on their car.. they nv or seldom service their car.. their car still fighting fit.

So i won't consider china car will spoil tat easily.. of cos the quality can't compare to jap, korean or conti car.

I made my choice, I ordered a Chery A5. Many thanks to all the forumers who had offered all kinds of advice.

Even this ride is much better than the China car... [thumbsup]

The statement you mentioned is factually incorrect.

In 2008 car registered in China

1. FAW VW: 498,867 units

2. Shanghai VW: 490,087 units

3. Shanghai GM: 468,642 units

4. FAW Toyota: 365,699 units

5. Chery: 356,092 units

6. Dongfeng Nissan: 350,621 units

7. GAC Honda: 305,997 units

8. Beijing Hyundai: 294,517 units

9. Geely: 230,420 units

10. Changan Ford: 202,797 units

Hence it is clear that Chery is unlikely to be rarely seen. Unless the last time you went to China is ten years ago, Chery dont exist then. [laugh]

Also apart from Toyota, no other japanese brands outsell Chery.

Chery vs Proton, if you look at the following numbers

Number of cars sold by Proton vs Chery in one year.

Number of cars exported by Proton vs Chery.

Annual profit of Proton vs Chery. (Proton is making sharp losses for past few years)

The numbers will speak for themselves and it is doubtful to me whether Proton remains after 5 years.

In 2008, according to LTA figures, Chery outsold Proton, Peroudua and Ford which is remarkable.

maybe the area difference, I stay at Shanghai, the most common looks like Shanghai GM, Shanghai VW etc, [:(]

to me surprised, Honda civic is not so common in China [:p]

Now I understand your statement, you stay in the MOST EXPENSIVE place in China. If I stay in the good class bungalow area in Holland rd, I may also come to the conclusion that Singaporeans only buy Mercs and BMWs.

From what I know, Shanghai is a more expensive city than Singapore.

Neutral Newbie

I recommand Geely, because Geely use Toyota engine, drink less fuel, even is old Toyota engine but good is time tested, and reliable, easy to get spare parts also. Chery use China engine which already proofed drink a lot of oil.

I was posted and had stayed in China for four years. I have see with my own eyes how fast China has progress and climb the technology ladder.

Most of the car in China are assemble locally even the foreign brand one, e.g Honda (Guangzhou), VW (Shanghai), Audi (Changchun), BMW (Beijing) and many more.

Most of these foreign brand car are manufacture for local market consumption only. The Chinese brand car are catching up very fast and Chery is one of them. another Chinese brand that I like is ZhongHua, the car they make are using BMW polatform, too bad we don't have it here.

Even car like Buick Kaiyue (Chevrolet Optra here) has sold more than 2 million unit since 2003 and is still top ten mid-size saloon at present. Go to Shanghai motor show and you will know how far forward they are now.

To my fellow countryman, we have to learn to be more humble. Remember years ago when we say Japanese car are Tin can and later on, some laugh at the Korean car. Do you still laugh at Jap and Korean car now?

Even aircraft manufactuer is building their aircraft in Tianjin, the first one just took off last month.

We better open up our eye big big and move with the world to ensure our country future survivor. (Sorry lah talking about patriotic at the wrong forum)

I drove a Hyundai Sonata (SDD plate) some years back, bought about 8 years back and sold 3.5 years ago. It gave me so much trouble that I swore I will never touch a Korean car again. I drove about 33 thousand kms a year. You cannot imagine the amount of problems I faced, brakes, engine, alternator, air-con, power windows, went in and out of Komoco for warranty claims during the first three years, continue to face numerous problems after warranty, after the last breakdown, I scrapped the car. Gotten really really scared of Korean Car (first car Nissan, second car Proton, third car Hyundai, fourth car Nissan )

The Fuel consumption of the Sonata was 9km/l compared to my Nissan Primera at 10+ km/l. Also the handling is quite poor, no problem making the wheels skid when I turned a bit faster.

I met a VP from Hyundai on a flight in 2003, I remember he told me that there will be a technology leap in 2004. They now have their own researh centre and test circuit in Korea. We have all witness how Korea car have improved over the last few years.

Chery have their own research facility now....need I say more.

But another one to watch is BYD, the Chinese battery maker that make the first electric vehicle, even VW and other brand are eager to have JV with them.

So open eye big big and look beyond the brand, the world is going thru a great change with the east emerging after years of "sleeping"

hi! are you more of a 'comfort' person, or 'youthful, trendy' person?

if you're looking at auto cars, here are some which you can consider...

1) Chery A5 2.0A- Beige interior really lightens up interior ambience...build quality is actually good, but do you really trust the Chinese? After the melamine case, excess lead in toys and formaldahyte in T-shirts...etc...do you still trust them? Outwardly, it may appear well-build, but you really do not know what goes into it...

if you aren't bothered, then the A5 is a pretty good buy...it comes with leather seats, alloy rims, keyless entry, audio control on steering wheel, rear air-con vents, auto air-conditioning, twin airbag, ABS...well spec for $44,999?

2) Hyundai Avante 1.6/ 1.6S- interior is all grey and dull, which may make you bored after a while...the 1.6 version is the basic model, without leather seats, sports rims, reverse sensors, auto air-conditioning, 1AB...really the bare basics...at $46,699...the 1.6S version has leather seats, sports rims, reverse sensors, auto air-conditioning, 2AB...but priced $49,699...

3) Kia Cerato Forte 1.6EX- $47,999...the higher spec model 1.6LX is over 50grand...the EX is really basic...the all black interior is dark, boring, but for young people, sporty...it's really cheap though...but the exterior is really stunning...

it all boils down to whether you want beige, grey or black interior...i guess...my 2-cents worth... [thumbsup]

bro, i think u WERE just unlucky. plus maybe the older hyundais were just starting out. i think u should give hyundai a 2nd chance. they r much better now. i own a korean car before & i just luved my old car. it didn't give me any major problems. i have a number of colleagues/frens driving sonata. they all have only praises for it.

if u buy a chinese made car now, i think u may face even more frustration than ur old sonata.

cheers! ...and good luck!

yah, hyndai car is not really that bad. i owned a 3rd hand cateye elantra 98 model. bot the car on the 5th year. gone thru many repair/ maintainance when using it for 3 yrs... went for workshop for problme such as CV cover, aircon, brake pad, radiator pipe leak, timing belts change (major maintainance), clutch worn out, power window kaput... but all these are parts and parcel of problem having a car, the repair is unavoidable because of wear n tear. Even my vios went back to BM in less than a month bacos of faulty MAF sensor. its all luck. In the end of the day, hyundai have problem, so does other car, even luxury car manufacturer like BMW and benz have flaws in their product.
