Yeobh 4th Gear May 22, 2008 Share May 22, 2008 13.6 - 14.2v during driving - it's the voltage output from the alternator. 12volt battery charge status - if you check the battery as it is - the voltage you are getting is actual surface charge and not the true battery storage battery. To get the correct battery charges status, you have to start the engine and run it for awhile and shut down the engine. This is the time to take the battery voltage. The idea reading should be 12.6volt

Kb27 Supersonic May 22, 2008 Share May 22, 2008 It is better to take the car out for a drive. Get all the parts moving, charge the battery, prevent flat spot on the tyres, etc.
Tech21 Neutral Newbie May 22, 2008 Share May 22, 2008 Ok brother, Ive tried running the engine (after 30 mins drive), turned off the engine at destination and checked that my battery is ~ 12V..time to change I reckon. Thanks guys! very helpful! To Mr. Junjie, sorry to hijack your thread..thanks!
Siyexcalibur Neutral Newbie May 22, 2008 Share May 22, 2008 It is like that, when the alternator is not on, the battery is at 12V. It is a 12 volt battery!!!. A better way to test your battery is 1) on the low beam for 5 minutes, then test the voltage to see if it is still about 12 V, but if your battery is weak, you will need jumpstarting or a battery charger. Siyexcalibur Neutral Newbie May 22, 2008 Share May 22, 2008 I think that is the best solution. If still cannot start, I have jumper cables, battery charger (only good if your car is parked near an AC source). If you have any problem can send me a PM. Kklee 6th Gear May 22, 2008 Share May 22, 2008 After the battery is being charged, letting the battery stand for a a few hours ( some recommend 12 hours) removes the surface charge.
