Hey wat u guys think of this brand?

it was the watch that got me interested into watches.

saw one of my business associates wearing the luminor marina with oem rubber strap.

fell in love with it ever since.. now starting to collect watches :)

imo, its one of those watches that is instantly recognisable when worn on the wrist.

but the price is a killer.. not very worth it considering the fact that its using ordinary movements for the entry level ones.

I'm looking at the marina range.

My friends who collect watches told me its not really worth the money, the only advantage is its quite limited in Sg, they controlled the quantity well so the price is quite fix due to demand.

However, spending 7-9k on this watch seems pretty high right? I could get a rolex submariner at this price!

Shrugs, would u get a rolex or panerai?

panerai_luminor_marina.jpg

PS: This picture is not the exact of what I want. :)

i like the Submariner and Omega PO big size.

Submariner for the Cyclops.. signature of Rolex

Omega PO for the orange bezel.. makes it instantly recognizable. its got a new co-axial escapement too.

but based on looks alone, still Panerai. hehe

u notice those actress/actors go for panerai more than rolex. panerai as mentioned more ex and probably higher class in that sense.

i beg to differ.. Rolex is definately "higher class" than PAMs. in terms of movements, history, accuracy or even the stainless steel grade used. [sweatdrop]

I will give you my personal opinion of this brand but you do not need to agree with me.

a) I dont think it is worth it, it is a half-dead brand until not too long ago when the U. S. marketeers start to promote it. Become famous AFTER Sylvester Stallone brought it into the U.S. It is a purely marketing success.

b) The Panerai Marina comes without a dive bezel. You are better off getting a Rolex submariner or Omega Seamaster Professional if you are into serious diving.

c) In terms of accuracy it is no match for any thermal-compensated quartz.

d) In terms of mechanical engineering, it cannot match the precision and low maintenance of an Omega Co-axial movement. Panerai is based on the classic swiss lever escapment.

e) In terms of craftmanship, it is no match for Rolex, Omega.

f) It is bulky and heavy, though some may like it that way.

g) In terms of ruggedness, it is not proven that it is more rugged than tons of watches out there. For the most comprehensive test on mechanical watches done quite some time ago by NASA, only Omega Speedmaster survives the extreme testing for watches and that is why it is used in early NASA space mission.

h) A lot of Swiss watches have longer history, better made, cost less, last longer and function better.

i) Some mechanical watches has grand complications which is difficult to built mechanically, e.g. Chronograph, Perpetual Calender, Tourbillon movement, moon phase, jump hour etc etc. Your Panerai has none.

j) Panerai is a recent marketing success, done partly by limiting the amount of watches produced. Pure hype with no substance.

The above is my humble opinion, and there is no need to agree with me.

sorry.. OT a little. whats ur view on the Omega PO? worth the money?

i'm looking at this model http://www.omegawatches.com/index.php?id=5...case=3&iddial=4.

costs $5150 before discount.

Bery cheap nia... PLus shipping (20plus SGD), IIRC, I only spend 300plus SGD and the watch is a head-turner... ;)

In fact, the first time I saw this watch, I thought it costs like 2-3K [dizzy][laugh]

The only thing I don't quite like is the strap which I thought if they have straps like mont blanc quality, it will be best... [sunny]

Definitely agree with you on the IWC. Fell in love with their watches when I first saw them. Really hurt the pocket when you start to get them... [sweatdrop]

Well, to be honest, I only like Panerai for the looks. The plain and simple look gives me the high feeling, the other watch that I'm keen on is the IWC big pilot, but its way out of my budget and there's no stock in Singapore at the moment..

For the Big Pilot, you have to ask them to call you when it is available because it rarely makes it to the showcase in the showroom. The Big Pilot is HOT and is worth the wait if you are getting one. [thumbsup]

panerai has a very distinguished history too, i'm not going to dwell on which got higher class. but i would rather be seen wearing a panerai than a rolex.

no disrespect to rolex, i personally think it's not worth the kind of money you are paying for, definitely not for the movement.

for similar price range, zenith or entry level Jaeger Lecoultre will be much much better options. rolex daytona used to house zenith's el primero movements, until about slightly less than 10yrs ago where they start to use their own movements. but if you buy a zenith with this legendary movement, it will cost a lot less. how come? cos pple have this wrong impression about rolex watches' quality.

Frankly Panerais have greater snob appeal as most of the people who recognize and wear the watch are usually the more educated professional types, you would not see a Panerai on a char kway teow man [laugh]

yes, you are right on this aspect. the towkays would buy rolexes as a sign to show the world they have 'arrived', but that really is so old school.

for me, the ultimate watches to get (within my reach) have to be the patek philippes with complications. those grand complications are out of my world, only there for me to appreciate, not own.
