Felipe 3rd Gear March 21, 2009 Share March 21, 2009 (edited) was at e launch. 1st impression of e car looks like a FL grande punto. 2nd impression looks like bit & pcs of a bravo. kinda side that mito is not a pc of art & all the 8c hoo-hahs r just marketing gimmicks. and frankly w all TC engine line-ups, lowered compression... guess 2 decades time, gonna miss reving to red line think its actually a punto platform with bravo engine. many here aren't quite pleased with the car. let's not forget alfa never made this car to be premium. The 147 was a premium hatch. Mito was made slightly lower to the niche affordable market, appealing to the young and being reasonably priced. of course, no alfa will ever be cheap, just as no bmw ever will. But bmw recognised the 5 dr practical hatch market and we have the 1 series. Alfa went one step further with the Mito. it's a new market segment for Alfa and although i think it can be successful in Europe, i think the car will struggle here (I mean the practical 159 and 147 are already struggling!) turbo is inevitable now as it saves resources. this is the trend for the next decade perhaps and for the next generation, we'll not even see gas driven cars anymore. still, a turbo can be redlined. think all the rex and evo chaps redline their cars right? lastly, i don't know why ppl all say mito is girly. when i was in italy few mths ago, i only see guys driving it. it has a lot of presence and doesn't look that cute actually. The 500 looks cute and er, i only saw italian men driving. guess it's all about perception sometimes. Edited March 21, 2009 by Felipe
Felipe 3rd Gear March 21, 2009 Share March 21, 2009 who in the right mind will buy a car of such looks??????????????????? i'm actually quite glad you questioned that. The italian way of design is to blow your mind away, love it or hate it. i've heard over the years who on earth will buy that stupid alfa that needs to check n topup engine oil every 2 weeks, door handles that need wierd stretching to open, boot release in button on the roof, selespeed wonders etc. that's the italian character for you. Topgear and autoweekly gave a much better review of the Mito.. topgear never gives a bad review to an alfa. even the 'worst' Alfa ever built, the 159, got such good reviews. Just to explain, it's actually the best alfa ever built, and that's why it's also the worst. because the typical alfisti is used to putting in lots of time and sweat to take care of his car, and revs the engine hard to hear that note & eventually falls in love with it. the 159 has softer acoustics, is more comfortable and surprisingly easy to maintain. Felipe 3rd Gear March 21, 2009 Share March 21, 2009 looking at the pics, the aircon does not seem to be climate control type. also no leather seats? the italian fabric is probably a better choice then. locally fitted leather is not as good as the factory ones so if one buys it, stick to fabric. guess they did not bring in the premium spec, maybe that explains the pricing. The 500 looks cute and er, i only saw italian men driving. guess it's all about perception sometimes. Most probably because they see the pictures only... I didn't think much of it in prints but was pleasantly pleased with the Mito look in the flesh. The Mito is only photogenic in certain angles. on But the Mito needs to be in red or white (white GTA in videos is just delicious) instead of black... Black hides the lines. Manual aircon, no electric seats and their competizione fabric... the seat feels very hugging Even though it is a 2-door car, the rear space is actually quite good... can sit 3 at the back. The boot space is compromised of course.
Mojoe Neutral Newbie March 22, 2009 Share March 22, 2009 who in the right mind will buy a car of such looks??????????????????? Well, people are also buying the 1 series and X6 as well... both, IMHO, aren't exactly lookers. Guess the badge helps... No sane folks would buy an Alfa period anyway... Dennisk Clutched March 22, 2009 Share March 22, 2009 (edited) Test drove it today, first time testing an Alfa... Here's my review and opinion of MITO Good: The dynamic mode is really fun to driving, steering felt stiften and more precise, pedal felt more responsive after switching to D mode. Bassy note/sound can be heard inside car while driving. Cruising quite comfortable... The suspension was also firm and can feel car firm to ground even with 16". Sports seat was very shiok and comfortable, hug around your back. Seats and Dashboard vinly was very nice. Against: Gear stick abit long for my liking Aircon was manual Body styling not appealing enough Pedal initial respond is abit lag Edited March 22, 2009 by Dennisk
Chrispie 5th Gear March 23, 2009 Share March 23, 2009 I think i saw you at the launch that day, you wearing office attire right? The Sales guy alrdy called me to ask me to go for test drive.. Sales: Hey Chris, when are u free to come down for a test drive? Me: huh.. no lah bro, i got 159 aldy. Its my gf that MAY consider. Sales: Your gf? ehh.. you know its full Manual right? Hhaha.. even the sales are worried lor.. manual cars very hard to sell here now, especially if its gg to be driven by a lady. Even i wont try... (lost the use of my left leg after years of driving on auto). The car, i think is quite a statement. It is undoubtly different. And if you do not want to be seen in a typical car, Mito is worth considering, even Vicki from fifthgear preferred Mito to the Mini. Upon initial inspection, the boot is quite bad.. cant fit a golf bag for sure. The gear nob too blink for my liking. But, the sound of the door closing is nice, the seat is comfortable and hugging, the design is pretty good and surprisingly the rear is spacious for a 2 door hatch. Let's face it: FIAT is for the mass, AR is the premium, then we have e other 2 for supercars & also Lancia & Abarth. but if e new models r to dig into e bins of the current line-up of FIATs... yes there'll be cost savings for the Group but it makes no real sense to buy a re-badge ride. probably only the PASSION ones will do die for one. i just find it conflicting for the Group to target Mito for this so called new segment for AR. but of coz it's AR tuned with better bhp & torque than a stock FIAT block. wonder where Abarth can squeeze into if it really hits SG? Felipe 3rd Gear March 23, 2009 Share March 23, 2009 yes, was referring to grande as thats the latest punto. this kinda sharing has been done long time ago when Fiat headed Alfa. The old punto 1.8hgt was actually an alfa ts engine but single spark. The present 159 engine came together from GM. 8C engine is from Maserati 4.2. This even happens to Audi where VW engines & platforms are shared. It's not a question of whether it makes sense. It's just inevitable. i think as long as some things are unique to the brand, like the way it's designed and as you say, tuned, it presents the only avenue to get such cars. Alfa can't stand alone on its own. So in a way, Fiat's entry is both good and bad. personally, for the local market here, i think the mito basically kills the Fiat 500 here. i understand the 500 cost nearly 70k. Well, nobody pays the same price for a Fiat over Alfa. Maybe that's why EA only bring in manual, so TTS still can sell some 500. As for me, i'm quite tempted with the Mito. i like the fact its a 6speed manual, great road tax, fuel savings & upfront cost. 159 is too big which i don't need. 147 is a good balance but only selespeed. Whatever it is, Alfa has never left my heart since a year ago. ↡ Advertisement
