Kelpie 2nd Gear November 7, 2008 Author Share November 7, 2008 not only that, some of the conti paper specs are done differently from Japs/Koreans, eg, the 1 to 96km/h is done with a specific passenger weight on the passenger seat, 1/2 petrol tank & also a specific luggage weight in the boot -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This could be another topic on its own. This is more like a myth or hearsay. No one can be exactly sure about this as there is no concrete evidence. Regards, -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- let me see if I still have my old 1990 Alfa 33 Manual and try to scanned it, I remember reading it and it stated that the 0 - 96km/h timing was measure with the above settings so I can assured you that it ain't a myth Well, what I'm trying to say here is there is no concrete evidence that "some of the conti paper specs are done differently from Japs/Koreans" these days. To stay competitive and not risk their reputations, I doubt reputable Jap/Kor car makers want to distort performance measurement in term of 0-100km/h, bhp and torque. If not, MIC can always state bhp/torque equivalent to Jap/Kor cars. Regards, ↡ Advertisement

Maxxtotal 1st Gear November 7, 2008 Share November 7, 2008 some NA can overtake with ease (usually high displacement with reasonable amt of torque)...... But in general, TC cars tends to do it better and with much ease... AS I mentioned previously, you should get some real world experience in a TC car to feel the difference.... Finally, which NA car do you have in mind when you talk about "advanced gearbox, paddle shift".....Honda civic? oh, and just to add.....I was a recent TC convert....used to think like you....what's the big deal about TC but once you tried it and especially in Singapore crappy type of traffic....the confidence and power/torque on demand is priceless... makes your daily driving less stressful as you do not have to worry if you can accelerate fast enough to make sure the oncoming car horns at you for blocking him..... Is that why there are many dare devil TCed Vans that like to ply the lane 1 every now and then . Sure, I've driven or test driven TCed car. No argument that TCed usually have that advantage on overtaking. However, NA car can still do it by dropping gear and accelerate to overtake. However to do it, it still needs certain torque range and ease of dropping gear to accomplish (some automation like tiptronic, paddle shift should help). Anyway, my humble ride is good enough for me to overtake of I want. Of course, overtaking must also give ample allowance and not squeezing in at last minute to test the brake and patience of the one behind . Regards, well that's the diff, NA car must drop gear, let the engine scream to get full steam... some NA car not enuff torque, engine scream but not much kick/shove/push... compare to a NA car, a turbo car may only 1 gear instead of 2 or even need not drop gear to to overtake if situation allows. which is why it is less stressful to overtake. BMW320i Neutral Newbie November 9, 2008 Share November 9, 2008 I think there've been many good answers in this thread already. Torque is really useful in our start-stop traffic and for overtaking traffic. You feel the car pulls like a freight train! I was driving the RX8 which was low in torque, so the power only comes in from the mid-range RPM onwards... now I'm driving a supercharged Mini which has much more torque in the low RPM range. This makes the car much more enjoyable in the city traffic. Many cars come with low-pressure turbo (LPT) to max torque in the low rpm range for easy overtaking, and I think Saabs are especially noted for this characteristic. The high-pressure turbo (HPT) cars have higher boost and the power comes in waves above certain rpm (perhaps 4000rpm). The power is greater but there might be turbo lag, esp if the turbo is too large for the engine capacity (eg. the Evo 8 FQ430). Hope this helps. Those answers are merely based on daily drivability. Without specific details anyone and everyone can imply 6000nm enough. LPT may be great in low rpm range but at higher rpm range, the LPT is struggling to keep up with the amount of flow that is needed to maintain boost and torque consistently through out the rev range. Like I said, way too many factors to consider and the original poster did not indicate what the car will be used for. If he wanted the car for drag racing, this would render Saab's LPT useless and FQ430 useful. There is simply not enough information.
BMW320i Neutral Newbie November 9, 2008 Share November 9, 2008 i agree, its very hard for us to give advises. only can advise base on general terms. maybe he is trying to tell us that his NA 2 litre car can overtake as fast a turbo cars. i also don't why he start so many threads comparing turbo and NA cars. NA 2L is too generally and so are fast turbo cars. ↡ Advertisement
