Sky61 1st Gear November 6, 2008 Share November 6, 2008 for NA car to feel fast n responsive in overtaking, lane change etc(ie looking at responsiveness n not high rpm vtec bhp) u r looking at like a NA fairlady figure of say 360nm or 35kgmm onwards. but for a 2L NA to achieve that,it would be nxt to impossible..for NA the rule is simple, no replacement for displacement. for TC,the reverse is true,Turbo is ur replacement for displacement... ↡ Advertisement
Russ 1st Gear November 6, 2008 Share November 6, 2008 Nothing beats a 5 Litre V8 or V12 for torque. Or a good 3 Litre Turbodiesel
Slayer Clutched November 6, 2008 Share November 6, 2008 For NA engine to do the same as the TC engine, naturally it need to produce the same amount of torque as the TC engine. How much torque that a 2L engine should have? Just take a look at the specs of a few 2L engines. U will have a pretty good idea. Often read comments that a NA car lacks the torque. Also read that a TC-ed car can overtake effortlessly, faster response in changing lane. So how much torque do you think is required for a NA car to do the same? Lets say how much torque do you think a stock 2L car should at least have? 20? Regards,
Fcw75 Hypersonic November 6, 2008 Share November 6, 2008 (edited) Give me torque over horsepower anytime. VW Touareg R50 V10 TDI. 850Nm of torque at 2000rpm. What more can one ask for? Edited November 6, 2008 by Fcw75
Boyboy 1st Gear November 6, 2008 Share November 6, 2008 ok. i was thinking in the context of how much torque a 2 liter NA outputs. but ur reply is more relevant

Rickster 5th Gear November 7, 2008 Share November 7, 2008 Can la. Must have equal or more torgue than a TC car lor. Maybe 350 or more. Happy? No lah, we're not here to debate who can overtakes who mah. I wanted to know the magic number that is deemed sufficient for say a 2L NA car to overtake or change lane with sufficient zest. Regards, That will depend on a car itself. I think for ur civic, probably need at least 200NM to be of reasonable acceleration without straining the engine. Dwoon 1st Gear November 7, 2008 Share November 7, 2008 Lorries also have heaps of torque at low rpm.
Saabretooth 2nd Gear November 7, 2008 Share November 7, 2008 For a NA car and a TC car with the same hp and torque (I have not come across a car like that, maybe the Vtec engines, but I don't know enough)assuming that both cars weigh the same...etc etc etc. In general the hp curves on a graph and the torque curves for both cars are very much different. meaning, at the same speed & rpm, and same gear, the TC car will find it easier to pull away. the NA car will have to drop gears to get to a higher rpm and access its torque. to do the same or keep up. thats why for daily driving, TC cars pull away more effortlessly. I like this saying HP is how fast you can go, torque is how quick it gets you to how fast you can go. a 200hp NA car may take say 7 sec to 100kmh(assumption only) a 200hp TC car may take a bit less than that to get there, say 6.8 sec. but both will likely get to 180kmh top speed. at about the same time, TC car maybe a bit faster due to its initial pull away. BUT, to maintain at that speed all the way (read max speed) the NA car will last longer and be a bit more responsive at the higher rpm/speed range, cause depending on the design of the TC car, after a certain speed and presure and etc.... boost will likely drop and the TC car will function nearer like a NA car, but with less compression. in my understanding, thats why F1 cars are high Hp, low torque, super lightweight. Rpm goes into the double vtec territory. 18000rpm or more. But I could be wrong cause there are Audi Le Man TDI cars that run well, and run long. so that could be great engineering and design. Ghostrider 3rd Gear November 7, 2008 Share November 7, 2008 The more cylinder you have, better back it up with capacity...cos more cylinder + low capacity = mediocre performance. Remember this and it ain't BS. "No replacement for displacement"
Ghostrider 3rd Gear November 7, 2008 Share November 7, 2008 Anything that is above 170Nm (must come in mid range RPM) will be nice....provided that your car does not weight 1.5ton.
Fcw75 Hypersonic November 7, 2008 Share November 7, 2008 The torque is needed to move the load.
Turbonetics 2nd Gear November 7, 2008 Share November 7, 2008 "double vtec". new phrase? anyway, even vtec can't produce that much torque compare to turbo assuming same power and capacity.
Vtim 3rd Gear November 7, 2008 Share November 7, 2008 HP is how fast you can go, torque is how quick it gets you to how fast you can go. yap, just like they say, "BHP sell cars, Torque win races"
Showtime Neutral Newbie November 7, 2008 Share November 7, 2008 Often read comments that a NA car lacks the torque. Lets say how much torque do you think a stock 2L car should at least have? 20? Regards, tc cars "seem" to accelerate effortlessly because their max torque arrives lower in the rpm range. so there is not a need to down shift to obtain the torque like a na car does. So one does not hear the engine revving and takes that to mean "effortless".
Akula Turbocharged November 7, 2008 Share November 7, 2008 Think your 2litre civic with 190+NM is sufficient. Off course another 25-30NM more will be better, but then it will be in the 2.4 litre category. Most 2.0litre NA engines now produces btn 180NM-200NM. Chickenbackside 1st Gear November 7, 2008 Share November 7, 2008 (edited) I think for the 2L car category, assuming the weight of the car is normal, ie 1.4 - 1.6 tonnes, a decent torque figure would be >300nm starting from around 2000rpm . Can feel the push. For turbo charged cars, torque figure is often around 100 more than hp, for eg, 200bhp, 300nm. You don't see these type of figures on NA cars.
