Kelpie 2nd Gear November 7, 2008 Author Share November 7, 2008 Often read comments that a NA car lacks the torque. Also read that a TC-ed car can overtake effortlessly, faster response in changing lane. So how much torque do you think is required for a NA car to do the same? Lets say how much torque do you think a stock 2L car should at least have? 20? Regards, This question is just simply too general. Unless you are able to define your purpose for asking such a question and narrow down the factors, otherwise there are just way too many variables to even consider. Don't thnk the statement that only TCed car overtake effortlessly or change lane quickly is true. NA can overtake just as quick with zest. Lower Torque doesn't mean NA is less powerful. With advance gearbox, paddle shift, gear can be dropped and accelerated just as fast. Regards, ↡ Advertisement
Kelpie 2nd Gear November 7, 2008 Author Share November 7, 2008 That is e-throttle then you need sprint booster. It is there to "fool" the electronic throttle...layman term...a lot of drivers on e-throttle cannot gradually step the throttle and they step a bit....no action (cos the e-throttle opening) then they buay tahan....step a bit more....then throttle by then would have open up. Its like a retarded action. E-throttle does nothing to gain power or torque. Its just there so that pple feel shiok....step a bit only the car go. These are just gadegts. I don't see why one needs a sprint booster? probably a "feel good" thingy. Just drop gear and accelerate, the effect would be the same. Kelpie 2nd Gear November 7, 2008 Author Share November 7, 2008 Thats why many conti cars, despite very low ratings BHP/ton, does not feel sluggish as conti cars tend to focus on bringing out more torque. You reminded me of Ford Focus, year after year, you get 100 horses . Regards,
Vratenza Supersonic November 7, 2008 Share November 7, 2008 (edited) some NA can overtake with ease (usually high displacement with reasonable amt of torque)...... But in general, TC cars tends to do it better and with much ease... AS I mentioned previously, you should get some real world experience in a TC car to feel the difference.... Finally, which NA car do you have in mind when you talk about "advanced gearbox, paddle shift".....Honda civic? oh, and just to add.....I was a recent TC convert....used to think like you....what's the big deal about TC but once you tried it and especially in Singapore crappy type of traffic....the confidence and power/torque on demand is priceless... makes your daily driving less stressful as you do not have to worry if you can accelerate fast enough to make sure the oncoming car horns at you for blocking him..... Vratenza Supersonic November 7, 2008 Share November 7, 2008 Sprint booster just takes makes your throttle more sensitive and responsive... for eg. same car with and without SB. Without SB: you step halfway on acc pedal, you get 50% throttle opening with SB: when you step halfway on acc pedal, you get 75% throttle opening of cos you can argue that you can achieve the same thing (75%) by stepping on the acc pedal 3/4 of the way....... the deal is, you are wasting the extra effort and milliseconds achieving it..... some may like it...some don't....... If his 2L block has no potential than why bother ? Also if the car weights like a boat why bother ? if the car has high CG why bother ? if the car's suspension geometry is not suitable why bother ? So many factors to consider but no specific details.
Neoxenon Neutral Newbie November 7, 2008 Share November 7, 2008 I think there've been many good answers in this thread already. Torque is really useful in our start-stop traffic and for overtaking traffic. You feel the car pulls like a freight train! I was driving the RX8 which was low in torque, so the power only comes in from the mid-range RPM onwards... now I'm driving a supercharged Mini which has much more torque in the low RPM range. This makes the car much more enjoyable in the city traffic. Many cars come with low-pressure turbo (LPT) to max torque in the low rpm range for easy overtaking, and I think Saabs are especially noted for this characteristic. The high-pressure turbo (HPT) cars have higher boost and the power comes in waves above certain rpm (perhaps 4000rpm). The power is greater but there might be turbo lag, esp if the turbo is too large for the engine capacity (eg. the Evo 8 FQ430). Hope this helps. Turbonetics 2nd Gear November 7, 2008 Share November 7, 2008 i agree, its very hard for us to give advises. only can advise base on general terms. maybe he is trying to tell us that his NA 2 litre car can overtake as fast a turbo cars. i also don't why he start so many threads comparing turbo and NA cars. Is that why there are many dare devil TCed Vans that like to ply the lane 1 every now and then . Sure, I've driven or test driven TCed car. No argument that TCed usually have that advantage on overtaking. However, NA car can still do it by dropping gear and accelerate to overtake. However to do it, it still needs certain torque range and ease of dropping gear to accomplish (some automation like tiptronic, paddle shift should help). Anyway, my humble ride is good enough for me to overtake of I want. Of course, overtaking must also give ample allowance and not squeezing in at last minute to test the brake and patience of the one behind . Vtim 3rd Gear November 7, 2008 Share November 7, 2008 not only that, some of the conti paper specs are done differently from Japs/Koreans, eg, the 1 to 96km/h is done with a specific passenger weight on the passenger seat, 1/2 petrol tank & also a specific luggage weight in the boot This could be another topic on its own. This is more like a myth or hearsay. No one can be exactly sure about this as there is no concrete evidence. Regards, let me see if I still have my old 1990 Alfa 33 Manual and try to scanned it, I remember reading it and it stated that the 0 - 96km/h timing was measure with the above settings so I can assured you that it ain't a myth
Sfrtuscani Neutral Newbie November 7, 2008 Share November 7, 2008 for that 140bhp figure, the torque will be ard 180nm to 190nm or so. this is the baseline figure for today's 2 liter engines i believe. so dun nitpick if urs is NA and higher but i think the torque figures for NA is largely standard. bhp varies cos some engines can rev higher.. or some engines may have higher peak torque but at higher RPM. may not be better to drive as compared to engines with poor paper specs but good low end hmm...the new sonata 2008 is 2.0 NA but 164bhp leh.... think the baseine need to increase... paiseh...mt 2 cents worth
