Dear Forumers,

I need your expert advice on waterspots.

I visited http://www.qmi.com.sg/car.htm at IMM level 3 for car polishing and was quoted $250 for the job. After I collected the car, I was told that waterspots were unable to remove and needed to respray the car inorder to remove the waterspots. They also told me that the waterspots has "eaten" into my paintwork and even by removing it, the paint work will be damaged in long run.

I am totally confused now and the waterspots are clearly visible under flourecent light. I am happy with the TEFLON coating but really upset with the water spots unsure.gif

Not an expert...Just to share some info wif you..

The price $250 quoted was to remove water spots or for applying TEFLON..Water spots are quite unavoidable here in SG...Acid rain etc are commonly found here...Depends on how long those water spot have been there..Usually most groomers will not promise 100% removal of water spots...

I can trim as much as I can at one time but to some car owners..they do not want to sacrific some micron of clearcoat just for some water marks.. removing water marks will not cause paint damage in long run...Here many own gloss meter but not paint thickness gauge so we wont know how many microns we are triming at each time

I have respray my Honda partly due to water spots...as till now..My car roof does have water spots as well...

Bo bian Bro..Just maintain it regularly..water spots are quite unavoidable especially if your car is parked outdoor most of the time..

I just has a similar encounter yesterday - I thought for a change I would engage a "professional" detailer to do my car instead of DIY, hopefully to get rid of the water spots. But unfortunately, he couldn't do it. But I paid like $95 for the 2-hour job, so I don't blame him actually. A year back, I tried a different detailer and he did the same thing. For that one, I sent back the car a 2nd time and he did manage to reduce the water spots further (for additional fee). But that detailer left lots of holograms on the car, so this year I chose another one.

Maddriver - can the waterspots be minimized through polishing by hand, or claybar? How?

Some waterspots cannot to clear one... polishing can only lighten not to be seen so easily. Black car is more obvious to waterspots.

Unless the pro has a thickness gauge then it becomes easier.

Or you tell the pro, do once or twice with wool pad and heavy compound, if cannot remove, forget it. Meaning you pay for the job, not for the guaranteed result. Very difficult to say quote to you 2-3 hours and promise 90% removal if they see that the etching is like medium-heavy condition already.

If you really like your car, can respray the top 3 panels if the condition is quite bad already. Request for mirror reflection with no orange peel, so that they spray thicker and sand it down. Also there are some clear coat that's better than the other. e.g. my friend just sprayed his car with new Glasurit 923-109. Only with good paint job, your detailing effort is worth it. If not, tons of effort, little result.

I recently found a product that can removed water marks on windscreens, glass or mirrors.

Am evaluating it and will bring in if it is proven effective.

I'm tired of polishing my windscreens and still unable to remove the water marks... [sweatdrop]

Water spot on body paint definitely can be avoided. There are so many examples out there on the road. But it's so easy to make mistakes [:(] e.g.:

1) [dead] The groomer says his sealant lasts 18 months, and you really don't wax or even wash the car for 18 months.

2) [dead] You use a good wax, but wash the car with strong/cheap shampoo or go to a petrol station that uses degreaser/detergent to wash your car, 1-2 times the car has no wax/sealant to protect already.

Every owner has to learn a bit. Just like you can go for hair stylist once a month, but for the rest of the time you at least have to wash and groom your own hair.

I've seen some owner work very hard, although their car is not swirl free, but at least there is wax for the protection and can avoid water etch. What is swirls? [:p] relatively easier to remove, it's the water etching which is the killer.

Just to share, I have been using DG since I got the car, and every weekend will make a effort to wash and AW the surface. And since hand polish is a very tiring exercise, I only do it every qtr. tongue.gifsweatdrop.gifsweatdrop.gifsweatdrop.gif

I can only say that it helps in keeping the number of waterspots to the min. btw, I park in a open carpark.
