Strat Supercharged January 19, 2009 Share January 19, 2009 I'll try whether can the shop I bought from, Fu***l from SLS, are willing to exchange the card for me, despite the distributor tech testing it ok on their barebone system. Now the question is whether do I exchange it for another brand of 9800GT or back to 8600GT (which is outdated and tough to find since it's end of product line). Will give feedback to you guys soon. what's the model of PSU the distributor is using to test the card? as a suggestion, you use their PSU as a reference guide to isolate the issue. ↡ Advertisement
Brock 1st Gear January 19, 2009 Author Share January 19, 2009 try to exchange to another brand of 9800GT and try it out. this could be an issue of different hardware not liking each other. Just read my receipt. "No refund or exchange allowed after purchase." Looks like I'm stuck with the Palit 9800GT Sonic. My worry is after I bring down entire PC to shop, they also cannot solve it. In the end, end up paying more for 'consultation' or new parts (e.g. new motherboard or graphic card).
Brock 1st Gear January 19, 2009 Author Share January 19, 2009 I browsed Google and found this: Looks like it's still PSU. But it's a new PSU!
Ender Hypersonic January 19, 2009 Share January 19, 2009 (edited) I browsed Google and found this: Looks like it's still PSU. But it's a new PSU! PSU is just part of the equation for adequate power supply. The other parts lies in the motherboard, the motherboard also have their own power supply circuitry. Having adequate capacitor for reservior and noise filtering is improtant, that's why some premium motherboard uses expensive capacitor. As I mentioned before your 2nd time boot up then things are fine is a classic sign that there's inadequate PSU. If changing PSU is not working, then it's likely the motherboard. Sorry, if this is not the answer you hope for to save money... Edited January 19, 2009 by Ender
Rainman 1st Gear January 19, 2009 Share January 19, 2009 Originally posted on Hardwarezone Forums but with very little help. First time powering up the PC after some time (10min or more) would leave the system frozen after successful memory check. Power down and power up again would usually cause the system to boot normally. Sometimes, it doesn't. Once it boots up normally, any RESTART from WinXP would boot up fine. I recently upgraded my video card from a XFX 8600GTS 256mb to a Palit 9800GT 512mb Sonic. The new card requires a minimum of 450W and a rating of 24a. My old PSU was a Coolermaster Extreme Power 550W. 12v1 + 12v2 = 16a + 16a = 32a Distributor tech tested my card fine. Said it is PSU not supplying enough power. Went down to another shop and described the situation. Also said it's not enough power. But when I said it was running 550W, they were surprised that it could not run as they assemble theirs with 550w working as well. Itchy finger, bought a new PSU: Aerocool Modular 650w. 12v1 + 12v2 + 12v3 + 12v4 = 18a + 18a + 18a + 18a = 72a. Installed it. Still same problem. Checked RAM. All 4 gig is fine. Noticed something. Upon 1st time powering up, all drives NOT detected. System freeze after successful RAM check. Only 2nd time onwards power on, drives are detected and system boots normally. WinXP SP3 C: is a PATA to SATA 160g D: is PATA 40g Lycosa keyboard with MS Mouse Sound is onboard chip Seriously need help here. Just put back the old graphic card and try....Mayb it's motherboard compatibility issue with the new gfx
Vroomtattat 2nd Gear January 19, 2009 Share January 19, 2009 (edited) Bro, you're running XP on SP3. Try to rollback to SP2 or goto "add/remove program" and uninstall SP3. My unker here says SP3 may be the issue, no guarantee but can try. . . . . GOOD LUCK!! BTW, frequent power on/off is no good for the mobo, mine got burnt marks Edited January 19, 2009 by Vroomtattat
Brock 1st Gear January 19, 2009 Author Share January 19, 2009 Guys, Thanks for all the advice and thought given. I went to a shop, Cyber****** and asked if I could purchase a video card and if it doesn't work on my PC, could I exchange it for something else instead. They were fine with it as long as original packing was in place. Experimented with another 9800GT, Gainward (the only one they had) and hooked it up. Still the same problem; unable to recognise drives on first power up. 2nd, 3rd or sometimes 4th power up then all drives are recognised. Checked the motherboard for any possible bloated or burnt capacitors. None identified. I will return the Gainward card and exchange for something else...probably a 1TB external hard disk of a similar price + $10. That would probably come in handy. I'll probably have to send in my PC to them for a checkup. Will demonstrate the problem to them, afterwhich I will remove my primary HDD for security reasons. Primary suspect now is motherboard. Will keep you all updated.

Will keep you all updated. I am not familiar with MSI graphic card but if yours is from MSI, bring it along. That is I assumed you intend to bring it to Corbell who is the technical support. In fact if your RAMs and PSU is from Corbell or Corbell is the local rep, bring along. At my last visit, they vetted through my 4 sticks of RAM, they found one defective and had it replaced FOC. Good luck.
Ender Hypersonic January 19, 2009 Share January 19, 2009 Primary suspect now is motherboard. Will keep you all updated. It may be the motherboard, but don't think it's faulty because you were usin it alright with the old graohic card and hence nothing is really spoilt and that's why you don't see any bloated, burnt or leaked capacitor. It probably just had bad power circuitry design or the value of the caps is not adeuate, or plain inferior capacitor.

Renegade777 5th Gear January 19, 2009 Share January 19, 2009 Bro, There is 101 possibilities. If have time can slowly slowly troubleshoot to find out what went wrong but by changing the parts here and there to make it work is costly. Going through all this can drive you berserk or "peg chek' ! Why don't you just send it straight to the shop and let them get it over with it for you and should not cost you a bomb. Bombed $155 on an extra PSU and $209 on an extra video card. But the $209 can recover...exchange for a 1TB external HDD! Going to send the PC to the mechs and see whether IF they can isolate the problem. I must be prepared to shell out $200+ for replacement and service...
