Vtim 3rd Gear May 30, 2009 Share May 30, 2009 actually writing after this, i called up e@stge@r on 205W. they only left a unit, going at $299, they admit that they are not going to bring in anymore 205w. Anyway, i'm not in rush, rather wait until pc show then buy. better deal. 205W for me!! You still can get the 205W from Navicom's distributor, same price at $299 but without any SD card and they will load MalSingmap for you. My Bro-in-law brought one on Monday. I compare MalSingmap and Jerome Map Plus, MalSingmap do not have Singapore Zoological Garden but Jermome Map Plus have it. As he is driving Taxi on a part-time basis, more often recently as his business is not doing well. I let him try out my 205w with Jerome map Plus, which he prefer as it will warn you on "popular" speed trap (alarm sound) & also Red-Light camera (speech). All search function litke street name, postal code are all done via POI.

Postal code search is only possible in newer version since ver 2.15. As for speedtrap, redlight camera and other alerts, you don't have to search and download them as, I believe, they are embedded in the latest map version. If your bro-in-law's device does not trigger such alerts, he can always download the alerts, in .gpi format, in the "Community POIs" sub-forum of MSM and installed those files in the POI sub-folder of the Garmin folder in the SD card. Tkseah Turbocharged June 1, 2009 Share June 1, 2009 i predict pc show will sell garmin 205w at $299.. Anyone bought the TiBO B1000 currently selling at $159? i bought one to play play and it seems to work ok.. main bad point about this unit is that u can only go down to the distributor (at sin ming) for free map updates during the 1yr warranty period.. after that it is not free.. driving with GPS is rather distracting tho.. so i might leave it aside when i'm tired of playing with it.. Tkseah Turbocharged June 2, 2009 Share June 2, 2009 (edited) yup, TiBO B1000 is using tele-atlas maps.. so getting map updates after the 1yr warranty is gonna be a headache.. but perhaps in 2yrs time a new gps unit will cost <$100 anyway... PS - the TiBO B1000 comes with current SG, MY maps.. plus additional ID & TH maps in the CD.. Edited June 2, 2009 by Tkseah

Osiris 1st Gear June 2, 2009 Share June 2, 2009 My experience is based on symbian hp w/GPS with Route66, Mapking Nokia Maps and Garmin MXT. None of them are perfect. After using AGPS for fast Sat acquisition, standalone sets that doesn't offer that doesn't suit me. I want immediate fix after emerging from a underground carpark and not waiting for a sat fix. when shopping for GPS for car navigation system, IMHO, I believe there are 2 important components 1) Maps. 2) Navigation software 1) Without a good map and localised content, you can't find easily HDB blocks or prominent building like Ikea Tampines (e.g Nokia Maps) the search function should have wildcard ability. e.g. you search for "Stamfo" should give you results such as stamford tyres. Roads should be well mapped. else you may be asked to U turn illegally. 2) Navigation software that give you clear and concise direction. Sometimes u turn direction because turn right and turn right immediately. Recalculation when you are off route should be fast within 3 seconds. (R66 is fastest follow by NM, GMXT and MK) the 3rd point i feel is also important is user friendliness. for some software, you immediately can figure how to use, others you have to read the manual. Clear directions instrcution R66 follow by NM, GMXT and MK. Map ranking is GMXT (MFM), MK, R66, NM User friendliness - R66, GMXT, NM & MK IMHO, If R66 has good localised maps, i'll say it beats garmin easily. It's Well written code to use symbian OS (e.g. use phone light sensors to switch day/night color mode, shortcut keys touch to repeat instruction, day/night color. on the fly change of map theme colors, stable (unlike Garmin which keep crashing when browsing map), create POI on the phone Customized road speed, speed alerts. Also little things in R66 helps like turn symbol has notches to tell you how many junction till you turn & trip completion meter

Sorry for my earlier mistake, my bro-in-law can do Postal code search but not the same way as Jerome's map which is via POI, in fact for Jerome's map, everything is via POI which he find more convenient. I went to MSM to take a look and found out that it was the latest version on his set. He wanted to know whether MSM will have speed (camera) trap and red light camera audio warning like my set that is using Jerome
