I registered for 2014 Sylphy in Mar and will be collecting it on 29 Apr. Currently an 06 Altis owner.

 

Hope to learn more from the experienced bros in this forum on the Sylphy.

I'm a new Slyphy owner. booked in late mar, got it on 17 Apr. Previously, drove altis 06 and civic 1.8 06 before. tested new mazda 3, new altis before bought this.

 

My personal opinions:

 

civic 1.8 - very much noisier in terms of engine noise, cabin insulation, aircon kick in, etc. FC is about 11+km/L. 5 speed auto gear box is smooth but no way close to the slyphy new cvt. acceleration is kinda weak from stationary. gotta step beyond 2.5k to move off quick on the line. The real power comes at much higher speeds (>100km/h). Good for overtaking at higher speeds. cabin space average. Rear leg room lose out to new slyphy, but width is wider. with 16 default 16 inch rims, the body roll is quite evident round corners. handling is quite average thought the car sits quite low... Suspension is on the firm side, so not exactly a comfortable ride compared to altis and slyphy.

 

altis 06 - super noisy engine. noticeable better cabin insulation. 4 speed gearbox is smooth but slow at times... spacious like the civic. acceleration from stationary is better than civic, but tend to run out of breadth quite early (around 80km/h). generally a comfortable car to drive. steering is rather heavy like the civic. Handling is reasonable despite the small 14 inch rims...

 

new Mazda 3 - cabin a bit cramp, especially the rear compared to new slyphy. cabin insulation is good but ruin but the noisy skyactive engine. It gives a unpleasant grunt when you accelerate from stationary. 6 speed is smooth. handling is very good, it engage u to drive faster, but.... the engine feels underpowered and u will get disappointed.. Low end torque is good for its weight (1.3ton) but runs out of breadth quite fast too. suspension is very well tuned, absorbs unevenness well.

 

new slyphy - a car i would never had considered in the past due to its ah pek image... until 1 day i sat on my boss car, i was like... omg! Its pretty not bad. the car was like so quiet and spacious. Its not that slow for a cvt too. surprisingly it always remains in low rpm regardless of speeds. even at 100km/h, it stays between 1750-2k rpm. 110km/h is near 2k rpm. Impressive! This is the same rpm as my old civic 1.8! Best part is most of the time, it runs at a much lower rpm compared to my civic, around 1.5 - 1.75k rpm. The car seems to be gliding on the road most of the time. For our local traffic, I feel that this car accelerates fast enough for daily use.

Boot space is impressive at 520L. rear leg room is impressive too. Got rear aircon too (quite rare for an economy car). The cvt works really well. Most noticeable is when exiting corners where you will feel the abrupt gear changes in most auto boxes, but the cvt will allow u to exit corners without feeling any gear changes. Its super smooth! And people will think that this car must have bad handling coz its meant to be a cushy ride. Actually i was rather impressed that it handles a little better than the civic 1.8 (on 16 inch wheels stock). No kidding! I experiences much lesser body rolls at same speeds. FC wise im still monitoring. so far I managed about close to 600km on 39L of esso 8000 which translates to about 15.3km/L (again... what can I say).

I did 3 layers of Diamond 9H coating with Opti-shine last weekend. (can check it out here http://www.mycarforum.com/topic/2695208-opti-shine-professional-car-groomingpaint-protection/page-14) Results are impressive.

Its a super low profile car where most people will not consider. But once you have personally tried it along side with other makes of the same price range, then u will know what I mean.

 

New altis - looks sexy, interior lots of cheap plastics... spacious like the slyphy, but slight less comfy. handling also a bit wobbly round corners. Engine feels more eager though but noisier. CVT is also not as smooth as nissan's. Lastly, its slight more expensive with no guaranteed COE....Also heard they still got a lot of backlog from cny...zzz

Are u always on highway? I got my sylphy for a year... Been using esso5000. Never hit 15. Max 14km/l. Try esso 8000. Not much better. I half of the time on small road. Short distance too...

I'm on 60% hw. run quite a lot of short distances too. work place and wife's work place both around 5-6km from home ;)

I accelerate from stop slowly (<2k rpm) and let the car pick up speed by itself. esso 8000 always give me better mileage even for all my previous cars. U might want to try shell's fuel save?

i tested sylphy days ago and noticed the CVT is working like normal auto box for the 1st to 2nd gear.. hold and abt of jerk feeling.

this not same as my ex latio (06) ... this is character of new CVT?

Actually this new cvt doesn't mimick say a 6 or 7 speed auto gearbox like the one in altis. so i'm not sure how u know its in 1st to 2nd gear.

anyway, i dun experience any jerkiness in mine. its just creamy smooth.

Was the Sylphy you test driven the SSS variant, which has MCVT?

What you described is the case for the SSS which has MCVT (can switch to manual mode 6 speed).

However, I am not sure if the 6 speed ranging and switching is active on non-manual mode or on Sylphys with CVT.

Indeed, steering for sylphy is definitely lighter than my dad's civic and my current Altis. A little too light but will get used to it.

 

I was rather disappointed by the new Altis dashboard. Seemed a little bare even as compared to the 06 Altis. They made an upgrade to the exterior but disappointed that they didn't do enough to the interior.

I can comment on this only after this Wed. But based on my short test drive, the rpm switches smoothly and I can't really feel the jerk. Was running from 0 to 100kmh and didn't realise i was over the speed limit because there was hardly any engine sound change like you hear in an altis.

Pls do slow pick up and see the rpm between 1.5-2k for the very first time.

I was told this is the pure drive cvt characteristics.

you are right, it save fuel when you go gentle on the car. the pick up still acceptable.
