5w50...more for older engines with high mileage or if u go tracking...raod usage 5w40 okay liao...2 thick an oil does more harm than good esp during cold starts....as u'll have 2 wait awhile more for the oil 2 start flowing compared to thinner oils...

Since you're running on a NA engine... and I think your Lexus should be still new... Thus I will think a 0w40 will be good enough... 5w50 might be too thick for your lexus.

Toyota engine always run very well with w20 oil, why would you want to go w50? You should try w30 oil first then w20, see which one runs smoother and quieter.

those are too thick. My 5 year old ride is on Mobil 1 EP 5w30. You can get it cheaply from trex101.

Many mechanics, especially the older ones are out dated. eg. my friend's mech told him not to use synthetic oils cos he is driving a COE ride....so my friend could visit him more often and get charged on spark plugs, oil filter and labour twice as often.

yours is only 40k km, for a Lexus/Toyota engine, you should be using w30 or even w20 fully sync oil, my cheapo Korean 2 L enigne is already 160k+ km and I am still using w30 fully sync oil without engine "eating" any oil [nod]

I read from oil forum that quite a number of Mobil 1 user comment of noisier engine sound from using Mobile 1 engine oil, not sure why. Perhaps you can try an ester base oil, the polarity nature of ester oil should gave the tendancy for oil to adhere to the metal surface, hopefully giving you a quieter ride? I would consider redline 5w30 as its an ester base oil with lots of moly for antiwear.

singapore's climate do not pose a problem for cold starts. so thicker oil is fine, but any 40w oil is more than good enough for most engines.

My previous car, 5 yr old Nissan Sunny is running on 5w-30 with no problem at all. By the way, all JDM Mark X is factory-filled with 20w.
