Zyrofillica 1st Gear October 6, 2009 Share October 6, 2009 aiya. 30 years later we will see a mass exodus of the chinese immigrants once china becomes a super power and an economic powerhouse. I'm sure China will open their arms to their former citizens because they need skilled labour with fluent english/chinese. Then maybe even some singaporeans will wanna migrate there too! Leaving singapore for the malaysians. Our govt should start an application to be a vassal/colony of china now. before its too late.

Viceroymenthol 6th Gear October 6, 2009 Share October 6, 2009 (edited) Let's put things in perspective. Know ourselves well in relation to the world. Who, what are we? Are we so great? Even Ferrari can do something like this for Chinese market. http://www.autoblog.com/2009/10/05/red-fla...ials-for-china/ What is Singapore? Just a little red dot. LHL is right. We start shutting ourselves off, being xenophobic, we go back to being a Malaysian kampong. The day Ferrari does something like this for Singapore other than complain about our F1 track, then we can start to be cocky and start to think that Singapore means something to the world. On the other hand, Singapore right now is just a work-holiday destination for many of the Western, Japanese and Indian high end expats who come here to have 3 hour lunches, $500k a year basic salary and "run" back offices consisting of Singaporean locals who do most of the back breaking work and get paid relative peanuts. The other extreme will be the lower end talent from China and other parts of Asia coming here to live off our subsidies, use our infrastructure, benefits, then f*** off back to wherever they came from. You're right. Wake up, Singaporeans! Show that we are more than a back office full of support staff and technicians! That's when we will finally be in the global reckoning. Right now I don't blame the transient migrants like the Chinese, Indians and Ang Mohs for leaving because their home countries DO offer better prospects and infinitely more glory. To make it big in China, India, USA, Europe means really hitting the global big time. To make it big in Singapore means nothing. Ng Teng Fong, Wee Cho Yaw, Kwek LB, Khoo family etc are really no big deal globally... a few billions worth, controlling some regional companies, not many people outside of Singapore have heard of them. But many in USA and Europe would have heard of GIC and Temasek. So unless you can marry into the Dynasty, you'll never make the global big time while pursuing your career in Singapore. Scion Turbocharged October 6, 2009 Share October 6, 2009 (edited) you know in the 1700s, Holland was not a united nation but controlled by the wealthy families that were more interested in earning money through trading... they invited an Englishman to be their head of state, so as to help Holland to deal with foreign affairs and act in the interest of the Dutch while they could concentrate on their businesses.. maybe we can do this too [sly] since our govt doesn't really protect our interest... we still continue to import excellent FTs but plant them in the govt instead... they must act in our interest (raise standard of living further, increase more jobs, etc) if they can't do it, we will ask them to balek kampung and employ new ones... huge salaries like the current ones can be offered as well... Ender Hypersonic October 6, 2009 Share October 6, 2009 This is really a sad fact for us singaporean. As I'm from the manufacturing line, and it's appears that in the near future I may have to seek opportunities in China as the need for our skill set in Singapore is diminishing fast.. Holland was a colonial power with huge and lucrative colonies in Africa and Asia, Holland had a creative and innovative society and economy, tulips notwithstanding. They had many who dared to explore overseas, use power from guns and ships to gain foothold internationally, all in the name of their country. Singapore is a nation of yes-men middle managers, "engineers" who are more like technicians, accountants and bankers, all with small lampar whose main aim in life is to have a steady salary, own a condo, drive a luxury car and send their kids to university. Singapore's best entrepreneurs are people whose claim to fame is a sound card and stupid massage chair. The rest of our "entrepreneurs" are people who import/export goods or retail silly items in shopping malls. There is absolutely ZERO intrinsic value added in Singapore. If and when Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand start to have a better educated population who can do technical stuff like accounting, engineering, management, etc as well as (or as badly as) Singaporeans can but at a much lower salary you are going to see MNCs ditching Singapore like a hot potato. We have already seen this happen to the manufacturing industry. Singaporeans working in these jobs are easily replaceable even within Singapore itself, with FT. Plus with the departure of MNCs, there will be no FT problem anymore because no FT whether high or low end will want to come here. So you guys will be very happy. Oh, now you want FT minister? Maybe I can hook you up with a drunk or drug addict from King's Cross, cos any FT worth his salt will steer clear of Singapore's govt and govt industries after the Charles Goodyear debacle. As for the so-called "entrepreneurs" in Singapore, import/export, retail, etc.... please lah. There is only so far the Singapore economy can go having these sort of entrepreneurs and businesses as the backbone of commerce, which is itself the backbone of any major economy. We have no Nike, Toyota, Sony, GE, CITIC global brick and mortar businesses to back our economy and GDP. We can only rely on GIC and Temasek punting our national reserves globally. Oh, i forgot.. we do have Semb Corp and Singapore Technologies... GLCs who add to our GDP. Are you a scholar? If not, forget it. Our only saving grace which can never be taken away from us is our advantageous geographic location. Other than that, we are hanging on by a tenuous thread to whatever we have painstakingly built from scratch. Hermitage 1st Gear October 6, 2009 Share October 6, 2009 Yes, all very true. Singapore has nothing local, or intrinsic, to boast about. Just last Sunday, a Thai fren of mine wanted to get some local produce from Singapore as mementoas of his visit to our little island. However hard we searched, all we found were stuff imported from elsewhere! Seriously folks, take a walk along the aisles of our so-called "local" supermarkets, how many items on the shelves can we consider our own? And of those few, how many can we consider truly unique to Singapore, and not just products ripped-off from another country and manufactured here? With all these FTs infiltrating our land and sucking it dry, how long before we lose our identity as a nation and fade into obscurity?

I would never say that Singapore is so GREAT, that they can 'look down' on Ah Tiong ppl but I would say that the new generation of Sillyporeans, don't have much of any SOLID BACKBONE' by now if at all! We cannot anyhow emulate what other countries do but inducting FTs randomly and in such numbers. The initial plan was right. To have desirable FTs have a taste here as PRs and then they could becum citizens later. But the Pappies started to induct large numbers of FTs later, many which are just trash, even in their own countries! As though this small island, don't have enough of their own trash to begin with! Yamato Neutral Newbie October 6, 2009 Share October 6, 2009 I must say the initial plan to bring in FTs to boast economic is great but somehow along the way, they started to give out PRs and Citizenship like nobody business, any tom dick & harry can become PRs or Citizen easily. So much so that our small island will soon be filled with FTs. ↡ Advertisement
